‼️TAKE A STAND AGAINST ANIMAL EXPLOITATION‼️

We are asking for your support in ending the sale of animals in Pets at Home stores, as the UK is currently facing a *rescue crisis*

To help do so, we would like to appeal to Pets at Home’s registered charity, Pets Foundation, who allegedly exist to “make the world a better place for pets”.

The foundation cannot ignore that one of the leading contributors to animal neglect, relinquishment and crippling UK rescue centres is the selling of irresponsibly bred animals at Pets at Home stores.

Please help us by emailing [email protected] or messaging Pets Foundation expressing your concerns.

You can copy/paste this pre written message attatched, or feel free to use the information to formulate your own response:

*****************************************

Dear Pets Foundation,

I am writing to discuss a topic which I believe is very important to the ethos of the charity, and which you could greatly help in resolving.

As I’m sure you are aware, the UK is currently facing an animal rescue crisis. Organisations and independent volunteer rescuers are at breaking point, with many having huge waiting lists of animals needing rescue space, and the animals in their care struggling to find homes.

Pets Foundation is, of course, doing important work to tackle this issue, with the money donated to rescues, research into minimising animal relinquishment, and rehoming animals in need through the Pets at Home adoption centres to relieve some burden from rescue centres.

However, the foundation cannot ignore one of the leading causes of this crisis: the sale of animals in pet shops. This is why I am asking for the Pet Foundations support to
end the sale of live animals in Pets at Home stores.

The animals sold in Pets at Home stores are supplied by intensive animal breeding facilities. These large warehouses have rows of ‘rodent racks’, shelving units of plastic tubs which house groups of small animals who are continuously bred. The breeding animals sadly rarely escape from these squalid places. The babies are packed up into crowded containers and transported across the country (usually without food or water) to be sold in stores.

One study by Cotton Tails Rescue found that 60% of animals handed in to rescues were originally bought from pet shops. People often see the cute animals on display and buy them on impulse, believing them to be ‘cheap’ and ‘easy’ animals to care for. As I’m sure you are aware, this is far from the truth. The animals sold at Pets at Home are complex creatures, regarded as exotic animals by veterinarians, who need much larger enclosures than are currently sold at Pets at Home (a few enclosures fit the bare minimum size requirements, but these are not widely recommended) and have very specific needs.

The spaces in the Pets Foundation adoption centres are very often taken up by animals who originated from Pets at Home, meaning the charity is essentially only able to attempt to fix the problem that Pets at Home has actively added to.

The easiest solution would of course be for Pets at Home to stop perpetuating the cycle of animals being bought and left unwanted, and to use the positive work of Pets Foundation to forge a new business focus; supporting the ‘adopt don’t shop’ ethos and actually making this country a better place for all animals.

I truly hope you can see the positive potential for change, and the need to put morality before profit to actually help the lives of animals.

Sincerely,

__________

❗️Winter Warning❗️

❄️Protect your pet from antifreeze❄️

With the recent cold snap, it’s the perfect time to talk about a hidden danger for our feline friends: antifreeze poisoning. Antifreeze (ethylene glycol) is commonly used in cars during freezing weather, but did you know it can be deadly for cats—even in very small amounts?

Symptoms to look out for:
- Lethargic
- Drooling
- Inappetance
- Vomiting

If you see your cat drinking what you think may be antifreeze, getting them to a vet ASAP is important. Early treatment will improve the chances of survival, however if treatment is delayed, unfortunately there is a low chance of recovery.

How can I keep my cat safe?
- Clean up any spills immediately
- Use pet safe antifreeze!
- Keep containers sealed and out of reach

Spread the word to keep the cat community safe!🐱

Bernie, Mr. Whippy and Slinky wish you all a Happy 😻😻😻
My three babies came from the wonderful
Whippy and Slinky were part of a massive stray colony, they were luckily found and trapped when they were only 6 weeks old, along with their other siblings and all the adult mums and dads. All have found wonderful homes, especially my two who I’ve had since they were 8 weeks and 2 years on I couldn’t be without them 😻😻
And then we have Bernie man (big one eyes ginger😜) who was found straying for 4 years, most likely abandoned by his family and left to fend for himself, he was attacked by cats and possibly other animals due to the scars on his neck, and due to the cat attacks he had a horrible eye injury resulting in his eye needing to be removed. Despite all this he’s the sweetest loving boy who loves people and most of all, food! 😂

The dreaded firework season coming up. Please be careful and mindful of all the animals, pets and wildlife
Here are some great tips to help keep your pets calm this season 😻

It's firework season, please keep pet safe. Here are some tips to help keep them calm.

GET THEM INSIDE BEFORE DARK: Don’t wait until the first big bang. Assume that your stressed pet WILL try to escape. Their ‘flight response’ is very normal considering they have no idea what’s happening outside.

BE CAREFUL WITH PATS: I know the natural response is to pat them to calm them down. But unfortunately this can send the message that you’re rewarding them for cowering which can actually encourage their anxious behaviour. Instead…

CREATE YOUR BUDDY’S BUNKER: This is where they can ride out the sound storm. A laundry or another well insulated room is ideal. Then…
- Close windows and blinds
- Turn lights ON.
- Put out cushions and mattresses. This gives them something soft to burrow under.
- Put on a load of washing. It sounds strange but the repetitive jolts and vibrations that they’ve heard before can help to drown out the booming vibrations coming from outside.

PUT ON CLASSICAL MUSIC: Beethoven, Mozart and yes, even Bach have been proven to relax your pets during fireworks. The rhythm and percussion can also blend in with and block out the bangs.

IF YOU’RE USING MEDICATION: Zylkene is the one I use for stress. There’s no doubt drugs can help those pets that are severely affected. But you must give them well before the fireworks start. If they’re taken when they’re already stressed, they just won’t work.

Use Pet Remedy or Feliway plug ins upstairs and down in the lead up to the festivities to keep cats calm.

Good luck and please stay safe out there.
