When relationships with our pets - particularly dogs - fail, it's most often because people have taken on a breed that has needs, traits and physical characteristics that they didn't know about or fully understand. Things like the need for sufficient exercise and mental stimulation; tendency to dig, or bark (some breeds dig and bark a lot more than others!); grooming needs which can be expensive, and seriously affect a dogs health and well-being if not properly attended to; predisposition to serious health issues that can lead to many 1000’s of dollars in vet bills, pain and suffering for the dog, and alot of tears and heartbreak for you and your family.
At Perfect Pets we’ve been connecting Aussie pet lovers with responsible breeders for over 10 years and there’s a few things we know for sure. Doing your research and finding a properly registered and responsible breeder will help ensure you don't take on a dog you're not ready for, or not able to provide for in terms of your time, energy and finances. This is because responsible breeders won't let you take one of their pups unless they're confident that you can provide a great home, and if they do, they'll be there to guide and support you long after you've taken your puppy home. Take your time, and never take on a pet on impulse - no matter how cute they are! Connect with our verified Dogs Australia (ANKC) breeders via our website - link in bio or https://tinyurl.com/DogBreedersAust - All fully registered and responsible. Breeders on Perfect Pets also provide a lot of information about breeding practices - their health testing, socialisation of puppies, and ongoing support.

I must admit I am a bit sick of seeing posts about harnesses and pulling.

Whilst I agree that using a harness doesn't CAUSE pulling, using a harness CAN encourage it if you have a dog that already pulls.

Using a harness that attaches at the back means that you're pulling against the strongest part of a dog's chest - typically this is where sled dogs are attached to make it easier for the dog to pull.

Ultimately if your dog is pulling then it's because the pulling has been working. Period. BUT using a back attach harness means it is EASIER for the dog to pull. This is absolute fact.

Personally, I cannot stand it when a dog pulls and I feel that lead pulling is such an underrated issue. I think it looks really horrid and uncomfortable, it can typically make any reactivity worse and it can result in injury (for both the dog and owner!).

If you want to use a harness on your dog and your dog pulls, then I would recommend a harness that attaches at the front.

Careful though, cause not all harnesses that attach at the front are made to the same standard. Check my stories for a link to a front attach harness I'd recommend.

But please, let's stop with the notion that harnesses don't have any effect on a dog pulling, because they do.

One more reason we do not use or recommend the "gentle leader or other harnesses that come across the dogs face.

Here is the vascular system in a canine head. This highlights the enormous amount of blood flow in the dogs nose. This blood flow serves many purposes, fuels the scent chambers, aids in temperature regulation, allows dogs to effectively track, but this also makes the dogs nose incredibly sensitive to touch. This is the main reason you should not use face harnesses. There are plenty of tools designed to communicate with dogs that do not put pressure on one of their most sensitive features.
