Cornish Spliced

Cornish Spliced Splicing handmade dog leads/toys & lifestyle products by repurposing discarded fishing/ghost gear. The more weird and wonderful the better!

Our Story…
We are a small family business hand-making dog leads, pet toys and lifestyle products using “splicing” skills and discarded fishing gear…

Making a living from fishing and passing down the skills needed from generation to generation is declining in Cornwall. So we wanted to find a weird and wonderful way to keep fishing skills in our family, whilst helping to protect the environment an

d sea-life for generations to come.

“Grandad Plummer” (Frank) retired from fishing aboard Tyak Mor and then Harvester in St Ives many moons ago. As girls, his two daughters (Rachel and Helen) spent many childhood hours in his “fishing loft”, sat atop bundles of nets whilst he made repairs and maintained his fishing gear. (We can still smell the ropes and feel the nets under our legs!)

Now with grandchildren and several dogs included in the family, grandad always has a bit of rope for when we forget our leads. In October 2021, 14 year old granddaughter Beth wondered if other people might like “a lead with a story”. From a family meeting around the kitchen table & a few social media posts, Cornish Spliced was born on what would have been granny Virginia’s birthday. With grandad Frank, Beth, mum Rachel and aunty Helen now involved, Cornish Spliced products are made by repurposing fishing gear from grandad’s fish loft and other kind local fishing families, as well as ghost gear scooped up on our beach cleans. We are proud to give our finds a “new leash of life”, preventing materials from going to landfill or re-entering the sea. Nets, buoy lines, anchors, floats, “dans”... each item has its own unique story or previous life, which is written on its label. Rope is “spliced” to make joins, so we can affix clips, make handles, combine ropes, etc. As a family, we have loved finding out more about fishing, whilst learning how to splice, keeping this special skill alive and passing down through our generations.

“Spliced” means to join, never-ending, which feels particularly fitting for our family adventure across our generations. We are always on the look-out for other retired and discarded fishing goodies so that we can repurpose it. We also love the challenge that comes with our bespoke item requests. We are constantly adding to the range with new ideas for products, adding knotting to the mix, along with incorporating assorted colours and textures of rope. So do watch this space! For further info, follow us on: Facebook/Twitter or on Instagram. You can also contact us at [email protected]

Do visit www.CornishSpliced.co.uk where you will be able to view and purchase items. If you think you may be able to repurpose any of our beach cleaning finds that we can't use, please contact us to join our friends. Thank you for reading about Cornish Spliced. We hope you will join our adventure.

We’ve been beach cleaning and rescuing ghost gear today.
So many bottle tops, plastics, ghost gear and RUBBISH, it was very sad to see.

Thank you to our friends who helped to remove ALOT !

We have a beautiful Cornish Coastline please help keep it that way.

If take it to the beach please take it home with you, recycle or bin it.

This lot would have ended up back in the sea 🌊 tonight.

NEW PRODUCT ALERT!... 🩵🩵🩵

Sprinkle some Cornish Spliced magic, with a set of three crochet hanging hearts – complete with shells, “nurdles” and swivels.

Handmade by crocheting twine used to mend grandad’s nets, they are soft and tactile, a beautiful turquoise blue. Each has a little piece of treasure added that we have salvaged from ghost gear – a shell, a “nurdle” and a “spinner” – preventing them from going from landfill or re-entering the sea.

They bring a beautiful little bit of Cornwall in your home. So treat yourself or give a set as the perfect eco present.

We’re dreading running out of Grandad’s turquoise twine, so get one whilst you can. Once the twine is gone, it’s gone!

NEW PRODUCT ALERT!!!... 🐟🩵
Perfect for end of year teacher gifts, decorating your bag or a zip pull... we are pleased to share our crochet fishy keyrings and dinky hearts.

Carry a little bit of Cornwall with you, wherever you go. Handmade by crocheting twine used to mend grandad’s nets, they are soft and tactile, a beautiful turquoise blue. Each has a little bit of treasure attached that we've salvaged from ghost gear – a “nurdle” and a “spinner” – preventing it from going from landfill or re-entering the sea.

As you can see from the pictures, the fishy versions are about the size of an average business card, whilst a heart is about half that size. Both are soft and will easily “scrunch up”. Or to keep them flat, each comes with a lobster clip, so you can attach your keyring to your bag, zip, or anything else you’d like to.

We’re dreading running out of Grandad’s turquoise twine, so get one whilst you can!

Both versions are £6.50 each plus £1 postage.

Please keep clear.

⚠️ Porthmeor today! More Hemlock (Dead Man’s Fingers) washed up on the beach. Advice is to steer clear and do not touch. Councils advise protective gloves and mask should be worn for removal. Many visitors will have no idea how toxic it is - if picked up the toxins can still be absorbed through the skin, likewise if a dog licks it or worse chews it mistaking for seaweed.

There doesn’t appear to be any process to report this for immediate removal. I’ve messaged the hotel, beach operators and council to see if they’ve been advised how to get it removed.

When the wind blows... we batten down the hatches and get creative!

We're not quite sure where these little beauties are heading. They are little, and soft, made with twine grandad used to mend his nets and granny's old crotchet hooks.

What do you think?... Keyrings? Shoals of hanging fish? Nurdels for eyes? Shells added somewhere?...

We'd love to hear your ideas 💡 🐟 💙

Another beautiful mat, we love it!!!
and 60m of ghost gear given a new lease of life. 🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊

A famous frog once said ‘It’s not easy being Green’ 🎶. But being green IS easy for this 7 Hitch oval rope-mat, plus, easy for US when we use a 2nd Chance RopeWorks doormat!

Meet ‘Greeny”, who is proud to be my 1200th piece of RopeWork’s creation! Greeny contains 195 ft (60m) of rope that is included on its Tag # 70.63 km. This mat tag # is the total sum of the length of rope I have Reused into unique items over the past 5 years. The coils of rope I made Greeny from were fished by Capt. Russell on ‘Free to Wander’ as buoyline on halibut and cod fishing ground-line and retired as end-of-life gear.

By collaborating with BC’s commercial fishermen we work proactively to reduce the amount of end-of-life rope going to the landfill or taking up storage space in gear lockers.
When you receive one of my handcrafted rope pieces, attached is the accompanying Rope-Story. This tells a little of the work this rope has done and something of the positive impact that work has on our Coastal Fishing Families and Communities. I hope this will bring a layer of history and individuality to each home they go to. As well as producing a sense of satisfaction in all of us for being part of the circle of RePurpose-ReUse-ReImagine.
