Tonight I found our little Sugar in her for ever sleep. I am absolutely heartbroken.
Sugar was the mother of the robo rescue we took in last year. This brave girl had FIVE litters back to back living in appalling conditions before she came here.
She loved her sand and her wheel (thank you @hambassador_bianca ) and was starting to trust me enough to follow my hand around the cage.
This brave girl survived the absolute worst and I had a five star home lined up for her - living it up in a pawhut mansion where she would never want for anything ever.
Sugar, I’m so glad I met you and I hope you have the best time in Eximius Meadows - find Bullet - he’ll see you right! Until we meet again!
Today I thought I’d share Brianna’s amazing enclosure with you…
Brianna lives in a Savic Plaza that’s pretty packed with stuff just how this busy girl likes it. She has a large deep sand area she loves to dig in (well sand area is debatable right now), deep eco earth, an aspen forage box, cork forage jar and a hemp forage jar. In addition she has loads of sprays, a hammock, snuffle forest, and loads of enrichment toys such as snuffles mats, loofah and wicker balls etc. she also has a couple of tunnels. I couldn’t pack more in this enclosure if I tried.
The official Eximius Hamstery line is: ‘Brianna is a very healthy, busy hamster who actively enjoys using her entire enclosure’.
We’ll leave it at that…..
Also I think my girl (who is very happy and showing no stress behaviours) could do with more space so I’ll get right on that for her 💸💸💸.
Hamster - emptying bank accounts every day.

Everyone has come a far way. But this girl is my proudest moment. This was the first night that she’s been so chill.
MEDICALLY COMPLEX HAMSTERS: STROKES AND STROKE RECOVERY
At 12 weeks old Sassy suffered her first stroke and my very busy girl started her fight for her life. For three days she couldn’t eat, drink or move much without support. She was confused and scared.
I’ve known Sassy from the moment she first escaped her mama’s nest. She’s had the best start and I strongly believe that has helped her.
Sassy has had several smaller strokes now including a more recent one where she lost some functionality on her left side. She’s lost muscle on the left and she’s less co- ordinated using that paw. So we do work with it.
1. We changed Sassys wheel to an upright wheel that she seems to find easier to use do uses more. This means she exercises her left side. Sassy stretches her right side a LOT which likely comes from the imbalance.
2. Deep sand to dig away in and requires the use of both back legs!
3. Daily work where Sassy is encouraged to use her left front paw and work on co-ordination with her paws to hold food items etc. she’s massively improved.
4. Encouragement to balance - Sassy has lots of items specifically placed to encourage her to balance which requires the use of both sides
5. Escape games and ‘pull up’ obstacles. Sassy currently can’t pull her body up as she doesn’t have full strength on her left side. She loves escaping and we’re working with that to really strengthen that side with her bodyweight.
6. Lastly - functional movement and massage when she allows it. Sassy is usually very easy going on this although post Stroke Sassys cognition changes and she’s far more confused.
Sassy lives an active full life. One day a stroke will take her from us but she is a fighter! Despite the loss of the use of one ear and the inability to use her left pouch more recently she’s out there living life to the fullest!
Strokes are serious but they do not have to be a death sentence!
Sound on for actual conversations I have daily with Brianna 🤣
Brianna isn’t a fan of meds and thinks it’s optional - I disagree.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
New Enclosure Tour!
We love showing our hammo’s digs! Honestly I filmed this a few weeks ago but it’s been HUGE hit! Yummy loves this design and has made full use of it!
This Yummy loves:
Her deep sand!!! Digging a LOT!
Watching me when she hears me through her watch box
Making box complex burrows
Her wheel!
Doing scenting dances when she’s in season
Digging in her dig box!
kicking her eco earth everywhere!
Dragging sprays into her hide/burrows
Creating a big stash!
Sometimes things happen for a reason. After holding this beautiful girl back for an adopter - and a last minute pull out - an amazing family contacted me yesterday looking for a pup for their child and she’s the absolute perfect fit! She’s going into her very own Mansion and we couldn’t be more excited for her!
I love adopting our babies out into awesome families! This little cream puff is so so soft and snuggly and over the last four weeks has really thrived!
I couldn’t be more proud as a breeder and I can’t wait to hear about her new adventures!
This morning Eximius Cathal passed away with a full tummy and snug and warm next to her sister. I chose the name Cathal because it means Strong Warrior. At 8 grams Cathal was the smallest of her litter and I knew when I removed her last night the likelihood of her surviving was very low. Cathal had injuries from the nest which unfortunately couldn’t be overcome.
Eximius Cathal you are named by us, held by us and loved by us. May your journey beyond the veil be swift to our Eximius Pastures. I know Grandma Brie and all your siblings will be waiting for you. She’s always loved having babies and she’ll give you the best snuggles and see you right. Tell her I love her won’t you? You are loved and valued and honoured. Your life counted.
Goodbye sweet warrior girl - until we meet again.
Two weeks ago Brianna and Xavier had a date…which resulted in Brianna moving into a maternity enclosure today.
It’s been a bit of an odd pregnancy in that she has hardly put on any weight but she’s definitely got a tum on her, she’s got those crazy pregnancy hormones for sure and she’s got ever prominent nipples.
Like her momma Brie she’s currently destroying her enclosure and ‘making it better’.
It’s definitely bittersweet having my beloved Brie’s baby in her maternity set up.
A good few of these items will be removed once she gives birth but she has a few days to go and I’ll be able to breathe again once she’s safely delivered her pups and everyone is doing well.
Generally I’ll only announce the Birth once I know everyone is doing well. The first few days are pretty sacred here and it really depends on the situation as to when I announce the birth.
Please note we don’t post pictures of pups before they leave the nest. Sometimes I will share images of pups escaping the nest as caught on our cameras but this is very rare.
Our pups are never handled until all of their eyes are open and they are at least 2 weeks old.
🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞 for a safe birth and lots of cute baby pics soon!
Miss Welly Belly is having biggggg regrets and she would like everyone to know she’s very sorry about the consequences of her actions.
Please note that Madam Welly Belly as my keeper (she’s got the personality) will be moving into her very own Savic Plaza tomorrow. There’s no cause for concern - this isn’t her permanent enclosure. She’s also quite happy and enjoying having lots of cuddles on my bed with me and playtime on her own!
In response to those querying her temperament - she has a gorgeous temperament. Some pups mature faster than others and are ready for their own territory earlier - after all Syrians are Solitary animals. This was the start of this behaviour. Welly Belly had always been more interested in me than her siblings if I’m around and is the most confident.
The other pups are relieved to be out from her reign of terror however short lived and are already much more confident. Kinky who got the brunt of her behaviour is a bit nervy still but even tonight is showing much more confidence!
Well it’s been an interesting night. There were rumbles in the girls enclosure and when I checked a few of them looked quite rough!
On observing I realised that wherever little Miss Welly Belly went arguments followed.
I shouldn’t be surprised to be fair as she’s a proper little monkey and from baby she inserted herself into every squabble but now she’s clearly seeking out rumbles in a territorial way and that’s not going to get better.
Welly Belly has dreams of her own pad just like Xavier’s - which at seven weeks she’s the most outgoing and confident and my keeper - she will get. The big but is that I’ve not had any sleep so she will be going into a basic temporary bin we use for medical care until tonight when I can sort her a Savic Plaza out. Oops. Sucks to be Welly Belly.
Unfortunately Welly Belly didn’t read the fine print and those pads take hours to put together so you’re going to have to do with a quick set up in our Ferplast Duna Multy until tonight.
Welly Belly would like to know where hamsters can put in complaints please? Also why did nobody tell her moving out ushered in the end to lots of mush?
It’s been a busy few days - and rough if I’m honest. I’m exhausted. I’ve also been dire at posting and there are a lot of changes expected in the next few weeks!
Two of our hammies had a date night tonight with what might be our last litter until late spring 2023 (did I mention big changes?) As a breeder we only have 4-6 litters a year however I think next year we will be looking at more like 3-4 very carefully chosen litters.
We don’t overbreed and we know that the cost of living crisis is going to push rescues to the brink so we are seeking to rather concentrate on breeding our two main lines making our Hamstery even smaller and allowing us to provide our hamsters and pups with even more space, time and enrichment.
Can you guess who we paired up? I’m SUPER excited about this pairing I cannot tell you!
This does mean that Cowboy will be looking for a new home - however I’ll be posting on that later!
Not to be outdone by the boys the girlies are sporting a new set up that they’re loving! They are so much more active than the boyos!
One of our recent set ups for the boyo’s! This one is from a couple of days ago and has a focus on a few different skills this time and the boys are LOVING it! They are building permanent burrows and the boxes inside teach them to make (as they are) more complex burrows with more that one ‘room’. As usual they are all taking turns sleeping in their bee hide and honestly just loving life!
As in every set up there is a plethora of things to explore with a heavy focus this week on foraging for food, making burrows, using the plastic tube to get from a-b (new) and of course digging, chewing, and playing!
We’ve shown you how our pups live - but we thought we’d introduce you to all our adult hamsters - and where they each live!
First up is Xavier. Xavier is a long haired satin Rex black eyed cream (phew that’s a mouthful) boy who is almost a year old. Xavier will most likely be Briannas next date and he is a permanent resident as I am his heart human. Xavier was bred by Cuppatea Hamstery and is a quirky very speedy little guy. He needs to stay busy ALL THE TIME and LOVES free roaming. He’s a total smoosh who adores me but honestly isn’t very interested in anyone else. He comes rushing out to see me whatever the time. It’s nice to be loved 🤣🤣.
Xavier’s set up is just how he likes it. Super busy and crowded. There’s no hide as Xavier burrows under his eco earth and sleeps under his wheel. He doesn’t use the hide and it simply wastes space.
Xavier is kind and intuitive. He always knows if I have a panic attack and gets really upset until I pick him up. He’s got the softest personality and I cannot wait for his temperament ho shine through in our babies. Xavier has never bitten me even when he was a super scared little pup. It’s no secret that I am Xavier’s entire world - he loves me more than I love him and I love him a whole lot. This means he’s with me forever and I’ll never put him through the pain of being separated from me.
Xavier has a few dates lined up - Brianna and Della being the first. He is VERY important to our Rex lines but honestly, mostly he’s going to pass on that luscious temperament and beautiful Hooman loving personality. Xavier weighs about 200g and under that coat he is a lean mean machine without an ounce of fat. He’s got such a fast metabolism that we work really hard to keep weight on our boy!
Feel free to pop us any questions about Xavier’s enclosure - or about our boy in the comments below!
How much can give baby hamsters pee in two days???? Enough for me to seriously look into buying shares in Reptile Sand!
Our girls have decided to share a visual representation of the ‘pee swamps’ we deal with here!
The lovely @xtashashamstersx sent us her latest subscription box as a gift! It’s got some super cute things in it that are all handmade.
If you’re interested in getting one of your own please pop over to her account!
Today I agreed a date for my GypGyp to go to her new home with @freja_rowena. I’ve spent the evening crying ever since.
We have a strong retirement policy here - but we don’t use these girls to give us babies then throw them out. I love each and every single one so much.
Gypsy came to me at 8 weeks old weighing less than 80g. Honestly, I took a massive risk but I had a good feeling about her.
Over the next week she blossomed (she now weighs 220g) and whilst a little shy we grew to have a beautiful relationship. She’s the easiest going Syrian I’ve ever had and she’s so chill that when I’m my most anxious holding her calms me right down.
We breed to improve the species and as a result most of our girls only have one litter. Gypsy was the most incredible mama and she’s produced an exceptional litter of pups. Truly exceptional.
I almost kept Gypsy for a second litter but she deserves to have a Hooman of her own. Someone who spoils her rotten and for whom she is their entire world. You can trust me that I have vetted this home very thoroughly.
My heart selfishly wants more time with my Gypsy Girl - who is truly exceptionally beautiful inside and out. At the same time I’m so excited about the adventures she’s going to go on.
Our hamsters aren’t stock, or breeders - they’re my babies and this is their home. I love each and every single one of them and know them inside and out. And so, each time I hand them over my heart breaks a little.
It hurts to say goodbye and I think that’s good. It means I love her. I’m so grateful for everything she’s given me as a person, the immense trust she’s shown me throughout her early days with her babies and the gift she’s given our Hamstery. More than that, I’m going to miss this super sweet not so little, little girl.
It’s almost always best for our girls to go onto 1:1 homes where they are going to be loved very deeply. Their new owners agree if things change they are to co
