There's a common challenge I see my clients face time and again.

🙈 Loose lead walking 🙈

When my clients first come to me, walking their dog is a chore. They dread being dragged around the neighbourhood and feel embarrassed when other people see them.

But I don't want that for you.

So if this is your reality too, don't fret. There are simple steps you can take to introduce more calmness into your daily walks.

Let's break that down for you today.

🐾 Build value at home for hanging out at your side, practise puppy push ups with doing a sit, down and stand at your side (video in comments)
🐾 Find out what your dog will work hard for, what is their treat they see as super high value - my guys all love the J R Pate treats
🐾 Start in your garden, if you cant get your dog to hang out at your side at home, you have no chance on a walks
🐾 Don’t try to start straight away do the walk you normally do, your dog has practised this walk of pulling the whole way.
🐾 Reward each step to start and engage with your dog as you do it and then build up the steps before they get a treat

By following these simple steps you can have your dog walking calmly by your side in no time.

🍗 Wake up to a roast chicken dinner. 🍗

🏝 A 2 hour walk on the beach with lots of treats along the way. 🏝

😴 Nap time. 😴

🐾 A 2 hour walk chasing squirrels in the woods. 🐾

🍗 Another roast chicken dinner. 🍗

🧠 Brain games. 🧠

😋 Treats. And more treats. 😋

😴 Bed. 😴

😘 Here's my top tip this Thursday! 😘

If you ever find yourself at the end of your tether with your puppy that just won’t settle down

Here's what you can do:

⭐️ Ensure all of their needs have been met

If your puppy’s needs haven't been met

They will finder it harder to relax

Have they been to the toilet, eaten their meals, had some playtime and bonding time with you

If their needs have all been met, try the below

⭐️ Do some training!

Teaching your puppy something new will tire their brain out.

When your dog knows a trick, ie roll over its easy for them to do and not much thinking.

When you first teach it, they have to do a lot more thinking = sleepy puppy

Think of it as when you go to a new course and you don't know the topic

You will come home tired, as you've been learning something new

But if you went to a course you have done before and a lot of it was repeated

You wouldn't be as tired

So teach your dog something new to help tire their brain out

⭐️Provide them a chew - yes I mean dead animal parts there is no sugar coating this!

Chewing naturally relaxes a puppy and releases endorphins in their brains

Which makes them feel good

And will make them sleepy…

When I arrived she was bright alert and biting feet

After a training session with me, learning some new behaviours

And we all want sleepy puppies!

🐶 Crate training dramas 🐶

Is your puppy not quite getting the hang of it?

You've heard all the wonderful stories about how great crates are. Other puppy parents swear by them.

But your puppy happily explores everywhere else, but his crate.

Maybe this sounds a little like your reality right now?

🐾 Your puppy is too frightened to go inside their crate and sleeps everywhere in the day but their crate
🐾 You wake up or come home to find accidents in their crate
🐾 Your puppy whines at night

I remember the crate training challenges I had with Maisie in those first few months.

It's tough, I get that.

But the thing is, puppies don't come into the world knowing what we want them to do. They need patience and gentle encouragement to help them on their way.

I've helped hundreds of puppies and their owners over the last 8 years. And in particular, teaching puppies how to love their crate.

I know sometimes this is easier said than done. So if you'd like some expert support to help you use a crate to:

🐾 January is Walk Your Dog Month! 🐾

This is the perfect time for us to get out and about with our furry friends and walk off some of that lingering festive food weight. 🙈

This awareness month exists to highlight the many health benefits of walking for both us and our dogs. It really can help swat away the January blues and improve our overall well being.

So if there's one thing you commit to this month as your New Year's Resolution, make it a daily dog walk!

🥳 Happy New Year to you and your furry family members! 🥳

It's been celebration time over the last couple of weeks at Carrie’s Canines HQ.

We've been spending time with family and the dogs, eating our weight in Christmas food and spoiling the fur balls in the home. 🎅🐶

But it's good to be back!

It's it is the New Year and I've had a few new followers recently so thought I'd re-introduce myself. 👋

I'm Carrie and I'm a local dog trainer and behaviourist

I help new puppy owners overcome the first months together to achieve to achieve that dream dog and older dogs build their relationship and bond which is the foundation work to get you dog walking by your side or coming back when you ask. I work with dogs who suffer with being home along a guided plan to help them cope.

I work to support them in:

teaching your dogs to cope home alone

walk nicely on a lead

come back when called

start you and your puppy on the right paw

And I do that through my Dream Puppy Programme, my Dream Dog Programme, Reactive Dog Programme and my Separation Anxiety Programme.

I started Carrie’s Canines & Friends over 8 years ago, and it's been the best adventure of my life!

And my own dogs Maisie, Eric & Envy come along for the ride too! They are my business sidekicks and they are often the ones that comes up with all the good ideas! 🐶

Helping my customers achieve the results or desires they want has been immensely rewarding.

Pets have been a big part of my life. Nothing brings me greater joy to see my customer achieve their goals 💕
