When a horse reacts to the saddle or girth, the first thing many owners think of is gastric discomfort, but that’s not always the case. There are several other factors that could be contributing to your horse’s reaction, and it’s important to explore all possibilities. Here’s why:

💥 Saddle Fit:
A poorly fitted saddle can cause pressure points or pinching along the back, making your horse uncomfortable when the saddle is placed on. This can lead to signs of sensitivity or reactivity, especially when girthing up. A saddle that doesn't sit properly can cause your horse to feel restricted or sore, which has nothing to do with gastric discomfort.

🔄 Girth Fit:
An ill-fitting girth can be a major culprit. If the girth is too tight or causes pressure in certain areas, it can make your horse feel panicked or reactive. Sometimes, it’s not the girth being too tight, but the wrong type of girth for your horse’s body shape, which can create discomfort during tightening.

💪 Tight Muscles:
Tension in the muscles, especially in the girth or back area, can cause a horse to react when the saddle is put on or the girth is tightened. If your horse has muscle tightness from previous work, poor posture, or lack of conditioning, they may be sore and sensitive, even if there’s no gastric issue at play.

💭 Associations with Past Discomfort:
Sometimes horses develop associations with certain actions. If your horse has had discomfort during riding in the past—whether from back pain, an injury, or a negative experience—they may react to the saddle or girth out of anticipation or fear of discomfort, even if it’s not actually present.

🩺 Gastric Discomfort Is Just One Possibility:
While gastric discomfort (such as ulcers) is a common cause of reactivity, it’s not the only explanation. That’s why it’s important to rule out other factors, like saddle fit, girth fit, muscle tension, or behavioural associations, to get a full picture of what’s going on.

By addressing the root cause of the reactivity, we can make your horse feel more comfortable and relaxed during saddling and riding. Want to figure out what’s causing your horse’s sensitivity? Let’s work together to find a solution! 🐎💖
Your horse deserves to feel confident and comfortable every time you tack up! ✨

Having a solid team of professionals who are all working together for the well-being of your horse is key to their overall health and performance. Here's why having the right support system is so important:

🌟 Comprehensive Care:
Every professional brings their own expertise to the table, whether it’s a bodyworker, farrier, veterinarian, trainer, or saddle fitter. When these experts communicate and collaborate, it ensures that all aspects of your horse’s care are being addressed.

🤝 A Unified Approach:
When professionals work together, they can create a unified treatment or training plan that takes into account your horse’s unique needs. For example, if your horse is experiencing back pain, the bodyworker and saddle fitter can coordinate to ensure the saddle fits properly while the trainer can adjust exercises accordingly. This ensures no detail is overlooked.

🩺 Early Problem Detection:
A strong team helps spot potential issues before they become big problems. Your farrier may notice subtle changes in hoof balance that could affect movement, while your bodyworker might pick up on tightness or discomfort that requires further investigation from your vet. Regular communication between your team helps catch and address issues early.

💬 Informed Decision-Making:
When all your professionals are on the same page, you get a clearer picture of what’s best for your horse. They can share observations and insights that help you make more informed decisions about your horse’s care, training, and rehabilitation.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Trust and Support:
Having a team you trust and who communicate openly creates a positive, supportive environment for you and your horse. It reduces stress and confusion, ensuring that everyone is focused on the same goal—your horse’s health and happiness.

🐎 Your Horse’s Best Interest:
Ultimately, it’s about your horse’s comfort, performance, and quality of life. When your team works together, they can create the most effective, customized care plan to help your horse thrive, whether they’re in heavy training, recovery, or just enjoying a happy retirement.

You don’t have to do it alone—let’s make sure your horse has the right team behind them. Need help building a dream team? I can help connect you with the right professionals to support your horse’s journey! 🐾✨

20/02/2025

Sacroiliac (SI) joint pain and kissing spine are both common issues in horses, and unfortunately, they often go together. Here’s why understanding their relationship is key to managing your horse’s health:

🌟 The Anatomy Connection:
The sacroiliac joint is located where the spine meets the pelvis, and it plays a crucial role in your horse’s movement. When a horse has kissing spine (where the spinous processes of the vertebrae touch or rub together), it can cause tension in the muscles and ligaments around the SI joint. This misalignment and pressure can lead to discomfort and pain in the SI joint.

💥 Compensation and Stress:
Kissing spine often causes your horse to move differently, compensating for the discomfort in their back. This altered movement pattern places extra strain on the SI joint, causing it to become stiff, inflamed, or painful. Just like when you limp to avoid pain in your leg, horses try to protect the affected area by shifting their movement, leading to secondary pain in other regions.

🔄 A Cycle of Discomfort:
When both kissing spine and SI joint pain are present, it creates a vicious cycle. The misalignment of the spine leads to SI joint stress, which then causes more discomfort in the back, potentially worsening the kissing spine. This cycle can make it harder for your horse to recover and feel comfortable.

💪 Managing Both Conditions:
The key to treatment is addressing both the spine and SI joint. By focusing on spinal alignment, strengthening core muscles, and improving flexibility, we can help reduce pressure on the SI joint and alleviate discomfort. Regular bodywork, appropriate exercise, and targeted therapy can break the cycle and help your horse move more freely and pain-free.

Understanding the connection between SI joint pain and kissing spine is crucial for helping your horse heal properly and comfortably. If your horse is dealing with either of these conditions, getting the right support can make all the difference! 🐎💖

Why One Size Doesn’t Fit All in Treatment Plans 🐴✨

Every horse is unique, which is why treatment techniques and plans should never be “one size fits all.” Here’s why tailoring care to your horse’s needs, personality, and tolerances is so important:

🧠 Different Personalities, Different Reactions: Just like people, horses have individual personalities. Some are relaxed and easygoing, while others are sensitive or even skeptical. A treatment that works wonders for one horse might overwhelm or frustrate another.

💪 Varied Physical Needs: Every horse’s body is different. Age, fitness level, past injuries, and workload all affect how they respond to treatments. A young, athletic horse might need more targeted muscle release, while an older horse may benefit from gentler techniques that improve mobility.

🐴 Tolerance Levels Vary: Some horses love deep pressure and release quickly, while others prefer light touch and take longer to let go of tension. Forcing a one-size-fits-all approach can create stress or even resistance.

🔄 Adjusting as We Go: Horses change from day to day. What worked last session might not be what they need today. A flexible treatment plan ensures we’re always addressing their current needs, not just sticking to a pre-set routine.

🌟 Better Results Through Individualized Care: By considering your horse’s unique personality, physical condition, and preferences, we can create a treatment plan that they’re comfortable with—and that delivers the best possible results.
Your horse isn’t like any other, and their care shouldn’t be, either. We’re here to listen to your horse, adapt our techniques, and work with them (not against them) to ensure they feel their best.

Because your horse deserves a plan as unique as they are. 🐎❤️ Ready to get started? Let’s create the perfect approach for your equine partner today!

There’s No Such Thing as a Stupid Question! 🐴❓

When it comes to your horse’s care, asking questions—yes, even the ones you think are “stupid”—is one of the best things you can do. Here’s why we love when owners ask us questions:

🧠 Knowledge is Power: The more you know, the better you can support your horse’s well-being. Asking questions helps you understand what’s happening during sessions, why certain exercises or techniques are recommended, and how to keep your horse feeling their best.

🐴 It’s Your Horse: You know your horse better than anyone else. Asking questions ensures you’re actively involved in their care and feel confident about what’s being done. We want you to be a partner in their journey, not just a bystander!

🌟 We’re Here to Help: We’re professionals, but we’re also human—and we’ve probably asked those same “stupid” questions when we were learning! Whether you’re new to horse care or just want clarification, we’re here to guide you without judgment.

🔄 Better Communication = Better Results: When you ask questions, it helps us tailor our approach to meet your goals and address your concerns. Clear communication creates a team effort, which benefits both you and your horse.

💡 It’s How We All Learn: Even experienced horse owners and professionals learn something new every day. Your questions might spark a great conversation, highlight something we hadn’t considered, or even teach us something new.
So, ask away—whether it’s about the process, your horse’s behavior, or even a term you don’t understand. Your curiosity helps us give you and your horse the best care possible.

No question is too small, silly, or basic. We’re here to support you AND your horse every step of the way. 🐎❤️ Got a question? Let’s hear it!

Why Foals and Youngsters Benefit from Treatments Too 🐴🌱

Bodywork isn’t just for ridden or older horses—it’s just as important for foals and youngsters! Starting treatments early can set your horse up for a lifetime of comfort, balance, and soundness. Here’s why:

🌟 Supporting Growth:
Foals and young horses grow rapidly, which puts stress on their developing bones, joints, and muscles. Bodywork helps relieve tension caused by growth spurts, keeping their bodies balanced and aligned as they mature.

🐾 Preventing Compensations:
Youngsters are clumsy by nature and prone to slips, trips, and falls. These small incidents can lead to tension or compensatory patterns. Regular treatments address these issues early, preventing them from becoming long-term problems.

🧠 Encouraging Relaxation:
Bodywork helps young horses develop a positive relationship with touch and handling. It teaches them to relax and trust, setting the stage for smoother training sessions and better behaviour as they grow.

💪 Building Good Movement Patterns:
Early treatments encourage proper posture and movement, helping your youngster build the right muscles and develop healthy habits. This is especially important for horses destined for athletic careers, as it lays a strong foundation for future performance.

🚫 Addressing Hidden Issues:
Foals and young horses may have minor imbalances or tightness that aren’t immediately obvious. Regular check-ups allow us to spot and address these issues before they become significant problems.

🔑 Start Early for Lifelong Benefits:
By supporting your youngster’s body during their most critical growth years, you’re setting them up for a healthier, more balanced life. It’s an investment in their long-term soundness, comfort, and performance.

No matter their age or stage, every horse deserves to feel their best. 🐎💖 Want to give your foal or youngster the best start possible? Let’s book a session and set them up for success! 🌱✨

Why Retired and Low-Work Horses Need Treatments Too 🐴✨

Bodywork isn’t just for competition horses—horses in light work or retirement benefit just as much! Here’s why keeping up with treatments is essential for their well-being:

💪 Staying Comfortable:
Just like people, horses can feel stiff or achy even when they’re not doing intense exercise. Think about how you feel after sitting still for too long or skipping your usual activity—your muscles get tight, and your body doesn’t feel its best. Horses are the same! Regular treatments keep them comfortable and mobile, even in low activity levels.

🧠 Promoting Mental Well-being:
Bodywork isn’t just physical—it’s relaxing for the mind too. For retired horses or those in light work, treatments offer a chance to unwind, reduce stress, and feel good, which is just as important for their happiness as physical health.

🚫 Preventing Stiffness and Compensations:
Horses in light work or retirement still move and interact with their environment, and small imbalances can creep in. A slipped step in the field or compensating for an old injury can lead to tightness or poor posture over time. Treatments catch and correct these issues before they cause bigger problems.

🔄 Aging Gracefully:
For retired horses, treatments can help manage age-related issues like arthritis, reduced flexibility, and muscle loss. Just as regular stretching or massage benefits aging people, bodywork helps older horses stay comfortable and active for longer.

🌟 Quality of Life:
Your horse has worked hard for you, whether they were a competitive athlete or your trusted trail companion. Continuing care in their later years shows your appreciation and ensures they enjoy their retirement to the fullest.

Every horse deserves to feel their best—whether they’re winning ribbons or simply enjoying life in the pasture. 🐎💖 Ready to give your retired or lightly worked horse the care they deserve? Let’s book a session to keep them moving comfortably and happily! ✨

Why Lameness Doesn’t Always Mean Pain 🐴💡

Did you know that a lame horse isn’t necessarily in pain? While lameness is often linked to discomfort, it’s not always the case—and understanding the difference is crucial for managing your horse’s health.

*Obviously, if your horse is suddenly lame, your vet should always be the first call to check they are not in pain*

🦵 Lameness = Abnormal Movement: Lameness is simply an irregularity in how your horse moves. It can stem from pain, but it might also be caused by muscle weakness, old injuries, or compensatory patterns developed over time.

💪 Compensation Without Pain: Think of yourself—if you’ve ever rolled an ankle or had surgery, you probably limped for a while, even after the pain subsided. The same goes for horses! They may continue to move abnormally because their body has adapted to protect a weak area, even if there’s no pain anymore.

⚙️ Mechanical Lameness: In some cases, a horse may have mechanical lameness, where an old injury or structural issue causes abnormal movement but doesn’t trigger pain. For example, a fused joint or scar tissue might limit range of motion without causing discomfort.

📊 The Importance of Investigation: Just because a lame horse isn’t in pain doesn’t mean the issue should be ignored. Even painless lameness can lead to compensatory problems in other areas, eventually causing discomfort or injury.

🐴 Your Horse's Comfort Matters: Addressing the root cause of lameness—whether it’s pain, muscle imbalance, or something mechanical—helps restore balance, comfort, and soundness, ensuring your horse can move freely and happily.

Understanding lameness is like listening to your horse’s body—it’s telling you something needs attention, but it doesn’t always mean they’re hurting. Taking a thorough, compassionate approach ensures their long-term health and well-being.

Need help uncovering what’s behind your horse’s lameness? Let’s work together to get them back to feeling and moving their best! 🐎✨
