Client progress recognition post 🩷
This will be a long post but the hard work this family have put in deserves so much recognition🥰
This big lad had his initial assessment with me just 6 weeks ago. His family contacted me feeling pretty hopeless about his future in their home, they were struggling with him being overly excited, jumping up and hu***ng people, excessive barking and they’d had a couple of incidents of mild aggression.
Given that he is a big, powerful lad (American Bulldog) this was one of the main concerns and had led the family to the heartbreaking decision to rehome him if training was unsuccessful - for both the safety of their family but also his wellbeing.
Recognising that they needed help, the family had previously sought advice from another dog training company, who 5 minutes into their initial assessment decided the dog needed to be shut away in another room. They then instructed the client to put a slip lead on the dog and drag him to his bed when he was exhibiting the problem behaviour - ignore him, and if he moved, put him back on using the slip lead. Not attempting to address or understand any of the actual causes of the behaviour. This practice unfortunately led to someone getting nipped on their face when putting on the slip lead because they were basically instructed to ignore all of the warning signs from the dog and weren’t given any advice for addressing the actual cause.
After only a couple of sessions together we have a dog who is so much calmer with visitors in the house, he is showing more affection to his family and overall is far happier and more content.
We’ve looked at the possible causes of the behaviour, thinking about a possible trauma history (he had 4 or 5 other owners before his current family most likely due to his behaviour) and learning how to read his body language and warnings. We’ve given him the opportunity for time outs to go and rest in a quiet environment, we’ve bought in enrichment in the home and focused on rewarding the behaviour we want, making it clear to him what we want from him.
It’s so obvious how much hard work his family have put in, with family and friends commenting on the change in him. Plus the bond and trust growing between them is absolutely beautiful to witness and is a true testament to the importance of understanding your dog. We still have lots of work to do, but I am looking forward to seeing him blossom as time goes on 🩵
