TEST IT TUESDAY: Make today 'Test it Tuesday' - the day each week that you test your smoke alarms at home. If you're the 'responsible person' at work, then also use this day to run a fire alarm test in your building.

You should do this during working hours so your colleagues recognise the sound.

DETECTING FIRE: The key to a reliable, robust fire system is having the right detector in the right place. If the system is too sensitive, it will generate unwanted alarms and won't be regarded as giving accurate information; not sensitive enough and it won't protect what it needs to.

SHARED PREMISES: In shared premises it’s likely there’ll be more than one responsible person. You’ll need to co-ordinate your fire safety plans to make sure people on or around the premises are safe.

For common or shared areas, the responsible person is the landlord, freeholder or managing agent.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY: Enjoy but be careful with those candlelit dinners! Candle fires result in over 350 casualties each year across the UK.

Here are some tips from the London Fire Brigade:

• Always use a heat resistant holder on a stable surface, which won't be knocked over
• Tea lights can melt through plastic surfaces like a TV or bath
• Keep candles away from materials that may catch fire such as curtains, furniture, clothes and hair
• Make sure you put out any candles, incense and oil burners when you leave the room and especially before bed
• Keep out of reach of children and pets

* If you store more materials which can catch fire easily.
* A new night shift starting.
* A change in the type or number of people using your premises.
