The longdog Home Boarding started because of my love of these fun loving loyal brave little dogs, I used to look after children! then I bought my first Dachshund, then my second and finally my third, will it be my last, lol! who knows!! What I do know, is that since the first day my first little long backed short legged sausage dog arrived in our home, she has been in charge!! I soon learned that this was absolutely normal for these cheeky little dogs, along with all their other traits.
with over 40 years experience with dogs, cats and small animals, Im surprised its taken me this long to get started, lol, I enjoy every moment of what I now do.
We offer meet & greet sessions for people who are thinking of using our services within the next 12 months, the meet & greet is for you and your dog/s to visit our home, it’s basically an informal chat, you get to see where your dog will be staying, ask questions, view my license, insurance & qualifications and learn more about what we do. It’s always best to do this part early, it will give you an idea if we are the right place for your dog.
Where do the Dogs sleep at night?
Wherever possible we try to replicate whatever their routine is at home. So if they sleep in a crate or bed at home, they can do the same while they are staying with us - its a good idea to bring their own beds or crate, bringing their own blanket, if they use one? also helps them settle better, having their own space is important to them too. The majority of dachshunds end up sleeping together on either the sofa or one of the larger beds/cushions in one big pile, but we are happy to do whatever you prefer, or whatever makes our sausage guests happy is fine with us, we have been known to take it it turns to sleep beside the dogs on a make shift bed! just to make them feel at home, we aim to please.
Does my Dog need to be Spayed/Neutered?
We generally do not take adult males in-tact beyond 9 months of age, as the presence of the testosterone often creates tension within the group, and they can become a target for the pack, this can potentially create a dangerous situation. There is also a strong likelihood that they will scent mark in the house, even if this is not something they do at home, just on instinct due to the increased amounts of other dogs scents here. We do offer trial visits/stays and occasionally we are able to make an exception if none of these issues arise, but more often than not its just not possible for longer stays unless neutered. Unspayed females are welcome as long as they are not in season or likely to go into season while boarding with us.
Do I need to provide food?
To avoid any upset tums we ask that you supply your own doggy’s food, we are happy to store dry food in airtight containers, or frozen foods in the freezer. Were happy to offer healthy treats, if you want to provide any treats that your dog particularly likes please feel free to hand them to us, we DO NOT give any dogs RAWHIDE or BONES to chew on at any time, please do not include these for your dog.
What about walks?
We do walk all dogs who are in our care, this is usually twice daily, (weather permitting) all dogs are kept on leads at all times, it is our policy that dogs will only be allowed of leads when they are in my garden which is completely closed off and safe. Even if your dog is used to walking with you without a lead, it will not be used to walking with us without a lead, its not worth the risk!
My dog has had IVDD can she/he still come to holiday at The Longdog Home Boarding?
We are happy to speak to you about your dogs needs and accommodate them if it’s possible to do so. I also have a dog who had an episode of IVDD in the summer of 2019, she made a speedy recovery and is absolutely fine, obviously we have made some small changes to try and eliminate a recurrence of another episode, I feel this has helped me understand IVDD more, and so I am happy to do my best to meet the needs of a dog who has suffered from IVDD. Tell me about this a our Meet & Greet.
How Many Dogs do you look after?
At the Longdog we only board a small amount of dachshunds, this allows us to give a more one to one experience for your dog, we have three resident dachshund’s who are very good at welcoming new doggies in to their home, we have plenty space for the dogs to choose where they want to get comfortable, and outside the garden is theirs.
Do you offer a pick - up service?
We do offer offer a pick-up/drop-off service, there is a small charge for this service, please ask us about this at a Meet & Greet.
