It was lovely to have a catch up with this gorgeous boy yesterday and to see how well he's getting on 😍 would you ever believe pulling on lead was an issue for Monty?! He walks like a dream now ✨

This evening in Troublesome Teens we've been working on recall, we've got a lovely big secure field which is great for training and practising recall in classes. Beautiful Bella Boo working on a fantastic emergency stop, one of the things we teach to improve recall and control off lead ✨

What is reward based training? It's a term you'll see batted about a lot from trainers along with "positive reinforcement training"- it's effectively giving your dog something they find rewarding during training for doing the right thing (or not the wrong thing) to encourage them to repeat the behaviour. The thing with reward based training is yes you can use treats, toys or verbal reward/ fuss but when it comes down to it, it's only a reward if your dog actually finds it rewarding!
My two dogs are a prime example of what is rewarding to one, may not be rewarding for another. Laika loves toys, she likes treats but toys are what she really wants to work for. Ivan on the other hand, isn't heavily rewarded by toys. He's a foody boy but actually he really loves a fuss and praise and me making silly voices.
It's important to preference test with your dog and if food is their thing, then stick to it (after all, you feed them everyday so you've got that whole pot of value to work with). Fuss is very rarely reinforcing but it may be your dogs thing and toys, especially tuggy toys and flirt poles are really worth trying.
What does your dog find the most rewarding? Does it change depending on your environment?

This is your reminder that it's ok to let your dog watch other dogs (even if they have reactive tendencies) as long as they are under their threshold. If they can't respond to cues, you're too close and they can't learn in their red zone.
This may all sound a bit like gibberish, but if you have a dog who barks at other dogs, pop me a message or book a free telephone consultation and I can help you through it 🐶

The consent to pet test... Fuss your dog for no more than 5 seconds, then stop, if your dog still wants to be stroked or fussed they'll tell you!
This is a good little bond builder with your pup, especially if they're a little bit anxious (this should also be practiced with any new dogs you're giving attention to). 🐶😁

Tonight Puppy School has been all about recall! Using only reward based training we worked out what each pup finds most motivating and we built on it. Within 15 minutes we had all pups off lead and focusing perfectly on their owners 😍

In Puppy School and during 1-2-1s, I talk a lot about mental enrichment to tire out dogs rather than just physical exercise. A little bit of evolutionary science behind this: dogs have a naturally inherited stalk, chase, catch/kill, and then eat sequence. With physical exercise, especially excessive on-lead walking and ball launching, the dog only gets to practice the chase and catch part, which gives an adrenaline rush over and over again. Then they miss out on the long, relaxing, chewing, and eating section, which can leave them hyperaroused.
Ivan is given lots of healthy, long-lasting chews and different types of enrichment to help him be calm and relaxed. Laika also had the same when she was younger; she now will retrieve a chew when she needs some calm time.

My top recall tip- have fun and be silly with your dog, it makes you way more exciting and really ups your pups engagement 😁

Hello all! Hope everyone has had a lovely week, we've been away in Madrid this week so I've been a bit slow replying to messages but will get back to everyone today 😁
I spent a very long time watching this wolf at Madrid zoo just doing normal dog stuff, he was very lovely 😍
Laika has been helping me out a bit recently to teach Charlie some dog social skills, today she also assisted with some loose lead walking practice too 🤩
I may be a bit impartial but Laika is a very good pup 😏😁

Happy #internationaldogday ! Anyone else obsessed with taking photos of their dogs? These are just a handful of photos I've taken of Laika this year 🤦♀️
