Most of my training sessions with my dogs look a bit like this... With a small human tagging along and requiring a good chunk of my attention. My dogs are fabulous, completely my babies but are not perfectly behaved.

We're constantly working on something- Laika's loose lead walking and prey drive is always something I have to work to keep on top of, Ivan is a dream on and off lead but if I don't keep his focus around other dogs he's frustrated reactive when on lead (and doesn't like strangers touching him).

But I train with my little human there, I manage the environment so it's not too challenging or stressful and so I can set everyone up for success.

The training plans I make with owners are designed with their lifestyle in mind. Yes in an ideal world you'd like a good hour a day or so to focus on your dog 121 with no distractions but I'm really aware that not everyone has the lifestyle that can support it. For a training plan to be effective, it needs to be manageable (or the work won't get done!).

Pop me a message or arrange a free telephone consultation if you'd like to discuss how I can help your family and your dogs.

🐾 Dog Club 🐾

I'm thinking of running another short course of Dog Club from the 3rd - 17th December, it'll be a 3 week group class of up to 5 dogs just working on fun tricks and skills. It's suitable for dogs of any age, they don't need to be dog/human friendly but will need to be happy in an indoor group class setting.
It'll be on Tuesdays at 6.15pm in Garvestone Village Hall and will be £40 for the 3 weeks 🐶

It'll be a nice chance to spend some quality time with your pup whilst also being able to tire them out without going out in the cold 😂

And everyone say "awww" 😍

We work on appropriate socialisation in classes which includes allowing the puppies to have little controlled meet and greets with each other. There's actually lots of benefits to allowing puppies to meet each other as long as it's not done as a free for all and puppies are suitably paired up.

Also means we get very cute little interactions like between these two!!!

We visited Westbrook Green Sensory Dog Park this morning and it was great! There's three fields you can exclusively hire with this one being the most expensive but still only £7.50 for an hour!! There's a shallow water spot, trampoline, ball pit, sandpit plus loads of tunnels and agility bits... Also a nice shed to hide from the rain.

My two have pretty spot on recall but sometimes, especially when I've got a small human to drag out too, it's nice to just be able to chill and let the dogs do their thing for an hour. I now have two very knackered dogs and a tired child too 😇😂

I'd definitely recommend it if you use private dog fields!

The fireworks started near us last night and this one isn't a fan. Every year she gets worse, she's a very noise sensitive girl, bird scarers make her bolt back to the car and remember the NHS clapping? She'd hide under the bed every week! Noise sensitivity is often heavily influenced by genetics and usually something pain related too... Laika has issues with her kidneys and I'm sure it makes it worse.

Sometimes you face behaviour problems which are more complex than just training and management alone can help, it feels like I've accepted defeat but I know I need to do what's best for my girl so I've called the vets and requested behaviour medication. It's a decision I don't take lightly with Laika because of her dodgy kidneys, I really tried to avoid giving her drugs but being terrified every night for the next 2/3 weeks isn't fair on her!

Behaviour medication isn't all made the same, the drug I've requested won't sedate Laika but will just take the edge off of things. So this is just a little note to say, that if you know the next few weeks are going to be hell for your dog. It's ok to ask your vet for medication, just do some research or feel free to message me so you can make an informed decision on what is the right one!

Did you know sharing your dinner with your dog can have massive benefits to their health and behaviour?

A varied diet can improve your dogs gut health and promote healthy digestive bacteria, strengthen their immune system, reduce the risk of cancers and allergies and (where my interests come in) can have massive benefits to their behaviour. Reduce reactivity, separation anxiety and improve focus 🐶

It's important dogs have a complete diet and the right balance of nutrients, I'm certainly not saying they just need odds and scraps but you can jazz up your dogs meals. Add some carrot, blueberries, egg, chicken, broccoli, peas, rice, banana... Whatever you've got in your fridge which is dog safe.

These are some really lovely examples from a friend of Toebean Trails 🤩

What do all these things have in common? ✨ They're likely to make a fearful reactive dog, react more ✨

Why?

Because when a fearful dog sees another dog in its brain it thinks "ah there's another scary dog, I need to make it to go away" then they bark/ lunge/ growl/ jump about and the other dog walks away.

So what happens when something like a slip lead, choke chain, half choke or a harness that tightens when a dog pulls is used? Well they see a dog, they feel scared and then they feel something painful which they then further associate with the dog and it makes them more scared!

Read in the comments below if you would like to know about the experiment that was done in the 1920s which proves this (it wasn't very ethical).

If you would like reward based help with your reactive dog, which looks at facing and changing the underlying emotion rather than shutting it down. Book a free telephone consultation 🐶

For anyone who hasn't seen one before, this little gadget is a clicker...

I love clickers—they’re a great tool in dog training! But when it comes to reactive dogs, I rarely recommend them to owners. Here’s why:

Timing is EVERYTHING—Dogs need to be told they've done something right within 3 seconds to learn properly. A clicker is a marker that tells your dog, "Yes, that's right!" followed by a reward like treats or toys.

But I prefer verbal markers like "good" or "yes." Here’s the thing: walks with reactive dogs can already feel like juggling! You've got the lead, treats, maybe a toy, long line, or even a poo bag. Adding a clicker on top of all that can be overwhelming for owners.

And when you’re working with a sensitive or reactive dog, staying calm and focused is so important. Owners are already learning and teaching at the same time, and having to manage a clicker can just add stress—something your dog will definitely pick up on!

Training needs to work for you to be able to work for your dog 🐾

My MSc lecture today was a topic I'm really interested (and opinionated) in 🍒

So here's a little summary for anyone else who is weighing up if to neuter or not, or trying to decide when is the best time to book the op:

(This is also simply from a clinical behavioural view and not for medical reasons)

✨ Behavioural benefits: prevents sexual frustration and removing the influence of testosterone may reduce scent marking, mounting and roaming behaviours, it may also reduce inter-male aggression.

✨ Neutered dogs of both sexes are more likely to be fearful of other dogs and strangers than entire dogs

✨ Spaying may reduce aggression resulting from oestrus or false pregnancies

✨ Dogs neutered later in life are more likely to have poor recall and howl or chew when left alone

✨ Dogs neutered earlier in life have increased incidences of fear/anxiety, aggression and excitable behaviour

✨ Dogs castrated at 7 to 12 months are 26% more likely to perform stranger directed aggression

But of course as with all science there are variables which may also come into play such as genetics, environmental factors and learning history.

The experience of neutering may also play a role as it is often a dogs first experience of staying in a vets. They are also often at an emotionally vulnerable age when neutered and a negative experience can therefore have a long term effect on their behaviour.

So there we are, a bit of science for a Tuesday evening. Have you noticed a difference in your dog when they've been neutered? Or are you holding off for some of the above negative behavioural effects of neutering? I'd love to hear some views and opinions ☺️

The happiest handsome face to end the working week 😍

This big boy loves everyone he meets and is a big gentle giant but gets pretty frustrated when he doesn't get to say hello, with 40kg of body weight behind him, it's not easy to hold him when he wants to go.

We've been working on building focus on walks, meeting Dudley's breed specific needs, teaching recall and a bit of counterconditioning around other dogs (can't say hello to everyone!).

Dudley is an absolute pleasure to work with. Such a goofy floppy boy with the most committed owners! 😁

Got a high energy or clever pup and an enthusiastic child? Teach them to play the "find it" game! Quite simple, give your small human the dogs bowl of food and allow them to launch it across the garden and hide it like a scavenger hunt whilst your dogs knacker themselves out sniffing out their dinner.

You end up with tired dogs and a happy child and you can sit and drink a cup of coffee in peace 😏

It's also a really great way to build your child and dogs bond and teaches them a way to interact which they both enjoy 🤩

Oh rainy days 🌧️ I already miss the sunshine from summer but I actually really enjoy walking my dogs in the mud and rain! It's always quiet and the rain seems to bring out all the best sniffs, makes my two little wolves extra wolf like and I love to see it 🤩

Does anyone else enjoy rainy walks?

First class in our new term is of Troublesome Teens this evening, the course is tailored to meet the needs of the pups on the course. These lovely dogs all have a tendency to bark at other dogs and/or people on walks so we started off with working on some focus skills and management behaviours. Skills they can take on to use on their everyday walks.

We ended with the cone game, a fun bit of brain work which aims to build confidence, practice owners timings and is also the foundation of muzzle training.

What a great job they all did 😍
