A new study shows these very polite fish form queues in emergencies. When evacuating through narrow spaces, schools of neon tetra fish (๐๐๐๐๐โ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐) queue so that they donโt collide or clog up the line.

Fish evacuate smoothly respecting a social bubble

Crowd movements are observed among different species and on different scales, from insects to mammals, as well as in non-cognitive systems, such as motile cells. When forced to escape through a narrow opening, most terrestrial animals behave like granular materials and clogging events decrease the efficiency of the evacuation.
Here, we explore the evacuation behavior of macroscopic, aquatic agents, neon fish, and challenge their gregarious behavior by forcing the school through a constricted passage. Using a statistical analysis method developed for granular matter and applied to crowd evacuation, our results clearly show that, unlike crowds of people or herds of sheep, no clogging occurs at the bottleneck. The fish do not collide and wait for a minimum waiting time between two successive exits, while respecting a social distance.
When the constriction becomes similar to or smaller than their social distance, the individual domains defined by this cognitive distance are deformed and fish density increases. We show that the current of escaping fish behaves like a set of deformable 2D-bubbles, their 2D domain, passing through a constriction. Schools of fish show that, by respecting social rules, a crowd of individuals can evacuate without clogging, even in an emergency situation.

A small shoaling species of suckermouth catfish. This species does best in groups of at least 6. Interesting post by Tetra UK
Did you know that fish can not only hear you, but they can also produce sounds for a variety of reasons?
These include signals to predators or competitors, to attract males or as a fright response. There are four main ways that fish produce sounds:
1) drumming by using sonic muscles that are located on or near their swim bladder. Interestingly the drumming muscles of the plainfin midshipman are the fastest vertebrate muscles, they can work at about 200Hz at 25หC. The humming noise made is so loud it really annoys people who live near the coasts where these fish are found.
2) stridulation by striking or rubbing together skeletal components
3) hydrodynamics by quickly changing speed and direction while swimming
4) Many fish pass air which makes a squeaking sound. When gasping air the weather loach takes it through the intestinal tract and then exhales through the spout-hole (this process explains the squeak sound loaches make when you take them out of water).

โจ Carolina Platy โจ
(Xiphophorus maculatus)
Very popular and peaceful community species. Available in all sorts of colours and markings. Keep a higher ratio of females to males. Will mix well with most communal species such as tetras, rasboras, cories, and plecos to name a few. Will readily breed in captivity without intervention. In order to save fry its recommended to place a gravid female that's ready to give birth in to a fry trap. Provide plants and decor In order for the females to take refuge when the males are relentless and they want a break. Most commonly available foods are accepted including flakes, pellets, frozen, live and freeze dried foods.
