TUESDAYS TRAINING TIP 🐕

Continuing the theme for January’s TTT of focusing on training equipment and tools:
• Invest in a longline for training •

*Usually* when using a longline, it allows your dog to have more freedom
… unless you’re Max, who sometimes doesn’t understand that I’m allowing him 10 metres of freedom instead of his lovely heel walking 😆

I meet lots of puppy owners that are worried about transitioning to off lead freedom, and I always recommend starting out with a longline first. This way you can have the safety of catching them before they bolt away and build your own confidence at handling your dog off lead

Of course, we should be practicing an excellent recall, building on the distractions so that our dog can still respond to us - your longline can aid your training while still giving your dog a good run and sniff safely

💡 Some top tips for longlines:

1. Get a waterproof line! I once made the mistake of using a fabric longline with a dog suffering with runny poops 💩… I’ll say no more 🫣

2. It takes time to learn how to handle a longline well. For me, the best way is to loop the lead like in the video, hold it in one hand with my palm to the sky (it stops the lead dropping), then releasing one loop at a time. Then simply loop back up as needed

3. Is your training going well? Then drop it like it’s hot! Yep, to further aid my transition to off lead freedom, I’ll attach my longline, but let it trail behind my dog. I’m now hands free, but I still have an emergency grab handle for my dog

4. I prefer a thick, brightly coloured line. The thickness of the one in the video stops it becoming tangled as much as others I’ve used, and the bright colour means I can always see it, and subsequently where my dog is!

5. Attach the longline to a harness for ultimate safety

If you’d like more info on longlines or recall, let me know!

🌟 Saturday’s Superstar Shoutout! 🌟

Here is the beautiful Bella, mid-recall in a hall, passing other dogs 💪
If I asked you to choose a word to describe Bella, what would you pick? 🤔

Now what if I told you that when I first met Bella, she was quite reactive, had come from a not very nice background previously, was lacking some social skills around dogs, struggled initially in the group class setting and had a loud bark 😆

Bella has come so extremely far since starting with us and is now the perfect model in class, laying on her mat calmly watching the other dogs, and even has doggy friends!

Bella and her owner are now celebrating their 1 year anniversary attending training with us! 👏 🎉

From puppy classes, to advanced classes, to workshops - Bella is now a founding member of our exclusive Dogs Club, and I love how excited she gets each week coming through the doors 😆🧡

Keep it up Bella and mum Paula, you are a brilliant team! 🤩

TUESDAYS TRAINING TIP 🐕

Kicking off January's theme for the TTT focusing on training equipment and tools:
▪︎ Training is the only true way of teaching your dog to stop pulling on the lead ▪︎

How many of you have seen adverts for training equipment claiming to instantly solve your dog's pulling?!
Well, the truth is that most of these tools are designed to make your dog uncomfortable in order to reduce their pulling 😔 .. the rest - preying on desperate dog owners with marketing gimmicks

I speak to lots of owners that tell me how many different collars, harnesses and leads they have bought, but the truth is that it doesn't matter what equipment you use if you put the practice in with your training

Of course, there are times I do recommend using a harness over a collar whilst completing the training - mainly when I see dogs that are making themselves physically sick through extreme pulling. Can you imagine the damage they could do to their neck if this continued? 😔
In fact, I have met a dog that has an altered bark due to damage cased to the neck through extreme pulling...

But let's discuss harnesses themselves, since they are a hot topic amongst many trainers. Although harnesses may feel like they make your dog's pulling worse, they do not cause pulling. But, there are good and bad harnesses out there too!

I will always recommend a Y shaped harness, that hugs the shape of your dog's chest and shoulders. I would not advise using a harness designed with a straight strap across the chest - not only are these unsafe due to how easy it is for dogs to escape, but they also can effect the way your dog walks by blocking the shoulder movement
(If you would like more info on this, let me know!)

Dogs have 4 legs against our 2, and their walking pace is much quicker than ours in general. By taking the time to teach your dog what you would like from them, it will save your achey arms and make your walks a joy!

P.S - don't fall into the trap of always letting your dog off lead instead 😉

👃 Scent Detection for Pet Dogs 🐶

Here are just a few of the benefits of taking part in scentwork with your dog ⬇️

▪︎ Mental Stimulation
Scentwork gives your dog a focus and a job, this can help combat unwanted behaviours and target their energy into fun tasks

▪︎ Physical Workout
Sniffing is tiring and calming for dogs. Teaching scentwork can give you an additional outlet for bad weather ruining your walks

▪︎ Creating Happy Dogs
As well as tiring our dogs out, sniffing and the act of finding their target scent releases the feel good hormones, signalling they've done a good job and encouraging them to continue

▪︎ All Dogs Can Take Part
From puppies to older dogs, dogs that struggle with being near other dogs or people, nervous dogs and even dogs recovering from injuries - scentwork can help them all!

▪︎ Reduces Stress and Anxiety
Similarly to above, scentwork can help to manage your dog's stress and anxiety - giving them confidence, giving them a better focus, releasing feel good hormones and the enjoyment of a 'win'. Watch your dog's flourish through scentwork!
