Happy New Lunar Year!
We leave Rabbit Year behind to welcome the Year of Wood Dragon.
Dragons are a symbol of power, strength, luck, and wisdom they are also notorious for its strong leadership qualities and determination to succeed, which will inspire us to chase our dreams.
This Year it is also flavoured with Wood element which is the element of new beginnings, perseverance, reaching new heights and working towards personal power. The Wood element encourages us to put forth effort to make positive changes and to grow as tall as the trees in the forest.

We are undeniably heading deeper into the Winter season 🌬️🌨️❄️☃️

Daylight is scarce, long mornings and early dark evenings give us perfect excuse to cozy up under soft blankets with a warm brew and enjoy fairy lights.

Introducing the last of 5 Elements :

Water 💧

Zhi is the spirit of the Water Element. The most usual meaning of zhi is will, though it has also been translated as ambition, purpose, determination, knowledge, mind and memory.
It drives the will to live. Water element main organ are Kidneys that also store the Jing - which is the life essence, the powerful storage of Qi that keeps us alive.

Winter comes with cold and need to seek shelter and warmth, failure to do so will have worse effects on the Yang deficient bodies making them even colder, achy and harder to move. There may be worsening of incontinence, arthritis, mobility, weakness, fertility. It can obviously affect old and debilitated.

Try including warming ingredients like Chicken, Lamb, Goat, Oats, Carrots, Sweet potato, sprinkle of Black pepper, Ginger and Cinnamon. It’s also best to feed warm, gently cooked or steamed food at this time especially if you have a senior animal that struggles with cold and his energy levels are low. Same goes for humans.

Third main use of Acupuncture in Equine TCVM:

3. Performance :

There can be multiple reasons for poor performance as I'm sure all riders and athletes are aware of that.
From muscle or back soreness, joint pain, tendonitis, back pain, hoof issues and the list goes on. Often showing as slight changes in personality, behaviour, handling, reluctance to move in certain ways, to make turns or jump as usual.

TCVM treatment starts with a full body scan that is a direct assessment for overall body health and allows to find sources of discomfort.
Acupuncture decreases the need for joint injections and medication by inducing natural analgesia, decreasing wind-up pain, by releasing endogenous substances to directly affect the central and peripheral nervous systems.
Additionally, acupuncture decreases travel induced stress, aids in digestion and decreases the frequency of associated ileus.

And finally Chinese Herbal formulas individually prescribed for each patient to maximise effects of therapy.

This months Patient Appreciation post!
An undeniable superstar model, a master napper, ideal new age therapies tester - Misty.
She is a retired therapy dog that committed most of her life to helping humans, holding space for sick and worried ones, she now lives her golden years stress free (besides younger brothers mischiefs) being spoilt by her mom and getting regular Acupuncture and Herbal medicine for her clunky arthritic joints, managing without any other medications thanks to TCVM, reiki, regular exercise and diet. Second main use of Acupuncture in Equine TCVM:

2. Digestive issues:
Chronic diarrhea, gastric ulcers, anorexia, indigestion, bloating, constipation, colic.
Acupuncture is a safe modality that regulates bowel movements, secretion of gastric acid, blood flow and reduces pain.

Studies in animals and humans showing it acts in multiple ways of action like :
- release of endo-opioids and oxitocin that are responsible for reliving visceral pain,
- regulation of vagal tone that then regulates autonomic nervous system allowing reseting bowel movements in case of diarrhoea or constipation
- inhibition of gastric acid secretion mediated by B-endorhins, and somatostatin to aid gastric ulcers and nausea/vomiting(non Equine)

Wondering what is Acupuncture good for?
Here is a first post of the series that will give you an idea whether your Horse would benefit from having a TCVM workup and acupuncture session.
*spoiler alert: any and every Horse can benefit from TCVM treatment. It improves wellness, quality of life and can boosts performance.

1. Musculoskeletal issues - a wildly broad topic. From muscle strains and soreness, tying-up, muscle wasting, specific joint issues, laminitis, navicular disease, back pain, DJD etc.

Pain and inflammation control with use of classical dry needle acupuncture, hemo-acupuncture and/or aqua-acupuncture also stimulation of regenerative tissue and stem cells release with use of electro-acupuncture.
Warming, circulation stimulating effects of moxibustion -Artemisia herb ci**rs is another therapeutic modality used for some conditions.
Tui-na and Gua-sha massage - myofacia release with deep and light touch combined for best results.

Todays weather reminds us of imminently approaching Autumn 🌧️☔️ 🍃🍂
Earth keeps on spinning wether we like it or not so we are being forced to let go of summer, remind ourselves of inevitable passage of time and face it.

Introducing 4th of 5 Elements :
Metal 🧲
Letting go and dealing with grief are big lessons related to Metal element. Those that constitutionally have more Metal traits can find those emotions and this time of the year especially challenging to deal with.
We all consider Autumn to be the season of runny noses and reduced immunity that are Metal element attributes. Chronic conditions associated with Metal like asthma, rhinitis, constipation or colitis may become aggravated. Try including pungent and white food in meals you prepare for your loved ones to nourish the body for the season (see the pic below)

This months Patient Appreciation post features... 🥁

The mischief duo Stanley and Enzo!
Those two are melting hearts much the same as they melt themselves in their infrared sauna.
They have totally different personalities and approaches to life: Sharky Stanley gives mouthy kisses (and bitch-slaps me if he doesn't like the needle placement😅) and Enzo is more of a Scholar type, distinguished and a bit more official takes all with a brave face.
Their Mom and Dad already feed them the best quality food aka Hound and Howl and from me they get regular acupuncture treatments and Herbal formulas to treat their ailments, from aches and pains, joint, digestive and behavioural (or should I say "attitude"😉) issues.

And it's a calm, quiet professional space, at central location with easy parking space, so there is no excuses!😉 And some of you already know Gemma Harland and her Mannin Veterinary Physiotherapy and Pet Care so you may have already visited the place!

Don't worry, it's a one foot touchdown, the other is still on a gas pedal 🚙💨 So home visits are still on the menu.

Introducing 3rd of 5 Elements :
Earth 🪨
Earths element season is Late Summer 🌾🌻 Time of harvest, long warm sunny days.

How does it shows up in our lives?
Earth element is associated with emotion of Worry 😰, Motherly, caring instincts 👩‍🍼, sweet taste of grains 🍞and starchy veg 🌽, comfort food like Jacket Potatoes🥔.

Organ related to Earth element are Spleen and Stomach. Stomach is responsible for receiving and ripening of the food and passing it down to the Spleen which task is to Transform and Transport and deliver energy from food (Gu Qi) to the rest of the body to nourish it with postnatal Qi (Zong Qi = Gu Qi + Air Qi).

Any disruption in direction of the energy shows up as an imbalance and results in physical symptoms. For example vomitting is a sign of Rebellious Stomach Qi when instead if it being directed ↓ it goes ↑.

Earth season is time of harvest, wealth, nourishment, abundance. Body should be strong and healthy, mind calm and confident, calming, supporting aura that gives others feeling of safety and unconditional love.
Imbalanced Earth is prone to digestive issues, healthy weight maintenance, appetite swings, muscle loss, lack of energy and weakness.

Fire element is associated with emotion of Joy and with Laughter.
You shouldn't be surprised to find out that organ related to Fire element is Heart, you may though be surprised that it's paired with Small Intestine. There is also a second pair ruled by Fire - Pericardium and Triple Heater - a special non physical organ that is only recognised in TCM.

Fire season is time of warmth, joy, movement, sweat.
When Fire becomes too strong we may face challenges like overheating, restlessness, hyperactivity, insomnia, heart palpitations/arythmias to name a few.

Something fun but also a very useful tool in TCM. Integral part of TCM exam. Personality type aka constitution can tell us a lot about potential health issues and weaknesses that we can use retrospectively to unravel root cause and disease progression as well as prevent, postpone future possible health issues if TCVM tools are applied ahead of time.

🔨The war on cancer, the war on viruses, the war on XYZ...

Are you engaged in a war against itching, vomiting, diarrhea, allergies, ear infections, arthritis, cancer, ...?

If there was a different way, would you take it? If there was a way of creating health, would you lay down the "weapons"?

I spent 10 years of my life fighting to get me health back and I realized something! If I provide my body what it needs and take away what interferes with its function, my body will heal.

As humans we are making things much more complicated than what it needs to be. We stand in the way of healing, because we have lost trust that our animal's body could once again work as nature intended.

But nature, the body and all of its helpers know exactly how to heal. The body is inherently designed to heal.

Five elements, five phases they are present in the life cycles, seasonal changes, our bodies, our organs, emotions, behaviours, body fluids, literally everywhere.
It's about the relationship between the different elements in nature and the life force - "qi," that flows through them that drives the constant change.

Everything always changes, you can't stop the flow of life, just learn to accept it and embrace it. There is endless beauty you can find along the way.

Although this little hairy Angel is no longer with us I would like to start this „patient appreciation” series with her as she is a very special little soul.
Nykkie was my first official patient, her loving family trusted me when I was taking my first steps in Chinese hat and although she was a very sassy old lady and often had to be chased and herded to her little fort made of pillows and coffee table to then stubbornly pace around with all the needle. We learned how to best work with her on her terms and then gradually she started accepting it more and would sometimes lie for the whole 20 minutes and snooze. At least she didn't mind her herbal therapy since that meant another piece of ham🤤 She was very brave and responded to therapy. Her appetite and digestion improved, she had more energy and strength and we kept her going until her 17th year of life 🎂
She was a challenging case, with ups and downs but we managed to keep the fire going for around a year and given her and her family more precious time.

This year I've decided to demystify TCVM a little bit for all you curious people!
I've prepared a series of posts that will give you an insight to Traditional Chinese Medicine Basics in hope this will interest you, satisfy curiosity and maybe even spark an interest to dig in a bit deeper into this fantastic philosophy and it's healing potential, not only for your furry companions but also maybe for yourselves.

It's a fascinating, vast knowledge and long journey that can take lifetimes to comprehend and master so obviously posts will only touch on the topics and I'll try my best to show them in light and most interesting way.
