πŸ’šπŸΎ Blue-green Algae and it's dangers πŸΎπŸ’š

Hot weather often means dogs are cooling off in non flowing fresh water such as lakes, rivers and ponds. Certain conditions such as hot summer weather can cause blue-green Algae to thrive and grow rapidly, forming a 'bloom' of blue-green algae on the water. It is not actually an algae but a group of bacteria.

Blue-green algae can be highly poisonous, or even fatal to dogs, so it's important that you don’t let your dog drink from or swim in water containing blue-green algae. It can also cause illness in people if touched or swallowed.

Not all blue-green algae is harmful but you can not tell by just looking at it so it is important to keep your dogs away.

Blue-green algae blooms on the water can look like:

🐾 A blue-green scum has appeared on the surface of the water like pea soup

🐾 Green flakes, greenish bundles or brown dots in a pond, lake or stream

🐾 A green, blue-green or greenish-brown paint on the surface of the water

🐾 Foam around the edges of ponds and lakes

Blooms of blue-green algae can produce harmful toxins which stop a dog’s liver from functioning properly. Exposure to toxic blue-green algae is often fatal and it can cause long term health problems in dogs that survive.

πŸ’šπŸΎ FLEAS πŸΎπŸ’š

With the warm weather they appear to be very active at the moment.

Please take the time to read and check out the images on how to identify fleas and possible symptoms your dog may display.

Although many dogs are very itchy and uncomfortable, some dogs may show no signs at all and fleas can be difficult to see.

Areas they are usually found are:
β– Neck and around the collar
β– Around the tail
β– Groin and belly
β– Back of rear legs

If your dog comes into the Grooming Lodge with fleas there will be extra charges applied due to fumigation required and cancellation of any dogs following your appointment due to the fumigation.

FACTS

Fleas are a common parasite in dogs.
A flea can only suck blood from their hosts as adults.
A flea can live from between 14 days to one year and a female can lay up to 50 eggs in one day.
It is estimated that 95 percent of flea eggs, larvae and pupae live in the environment, not on your pet.
Fleas can jump up to 13 inches.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I SUSPECT MY DOG HAS FLEAS?

If you suspect your dog has fleas ask your vet for a suitable flea treatment for your dog and any other pets in your house. Over the counter treatment i. e not from the vets may be cheaper but tend to be less effective and the fleas are often resistant to them.

If your dog is due to be groomed please contact The Grooming Lodge to reschedule your dog's appointment to a suitable date after treatment. Some treatments require at least 48 hours before bathing/swimming for the treatment to be effective.

Only give your pet flea treatment that has been recommended for them. Products suitable for one species may not be suitable for another. Some dog flea treatments contain permethrin, an insecticide that is safe for dogs but highly toxic to cats.

It is also essential to treat the environment as fleas can survive without a host for several months:
β– Wash your dog's bedding at a high temperature (60 degrees or above)
β– Vacuum furniture, floors and skirting boards
β– Throw away the dust bag from your vacuum after each use
β–  There are also household treatment sprays available e.g. Indorex and don't forget if your dog has been travelling in the car that will need treating too

Due to the flea life cycle and level of infestation, new fleas may carry on emerging in the home for six weeks or longer after initial application of an effective flea treatment to your pet; therefore more than one treatment may be required.

AVAILABLE FLEA TREATMENTS

β– Spot on
β– Tablets
β– Collars
β– Sprays
β– There are also a wide range of natural products on the market that can be used as preventative natural repellents.

As always, if you're worried about your dog's health, please contact your vet.
