My family has

always had dogs, always rescue and always with some quirk, foible or iidisioincrasy unique to that specific dog so, when I set up home in Dumbarton, I had no hesitation in heading to the Cat & Dog Home where I found my canine soul mate, Dexter. Now 4years old Dex started life with more hang ups than a double glazing Call Centre!! After 3 years together, he is now well on his way to the an Agility Star and Tulla, my cocker pup, will be starting soon. I love walking my dogs (and hopefully your dog)-I love the fun they have off the lead, I love seeing them run for the pure joy of it & I love seeing them ALL WAGGED OUT.

🥞🐾The Great Pancake Pursuit: The Trail Hunt Tasty Trials!🥞🐾

Deep in the heart of Ali’s Magical Woodland, where the trees whisper recipes and the rivers babble about baking techniques, a legendary challenge awaits.

Once a year, on Pancake Day, the finest Trail Hunt Chefs gather to prove their sniffing, seeking, and flipping prowess in The Great Pancake Pursuit. Their mission? To track down the world’s most perfect pancake recipe, following the aniseed trail through a land of culinary chaos.

Each trail hunter is joined by their loyal canine sidekick, who serves as scribe and sous-chef, jotting down the precious recipe while their human navigates the twists and turns of the enchanted woodland kitchen.

But this is no ordinary trail. To be crowned Master Baker of the Barking Batter, competitors must gather every ingredient hidden along the aniseed path and record the recipe with absolute accuracy. Only those who get it all right will qualify for the grand title—though if there’s a tie, speed will be the deciding factor (because no one likes waiting too long for pancakes!).

And, of course, no true pancake quest would be complete without an egg-cellent challenge for the humans. Expect a test of wit, skill, and possibly a little silliness before the final ingredient is revealed!

So, trail hunters, the challenge is set. Follow the aniseed, collect the ingredients, and prove your pancake prowess! Will you rise to the occasion, or will the woodland have you waffling under pressure? There’s only one way to find out…

Let the flipping begin!

🥞9th of March

Storm Éowyn is Coming – Prep Today for a Stress-Free Tomorrow!

Tomorrow’s weather is going to be wild, so let’s set our dogs up for a safe and settled day indoors. Here’s what we can do today to make things easier:

🐾 Get a Good Walk In Today – Burn off energy with a longer walk or a sniffari while it’s still safe.

🐾 Prep Enrichment Now – Make frozen Kongs, Yogi Pots, Lickimats, or plan a puzzle meal to keep them busy.

🐾 Check Garden Safety – Look for anything that could blow over. Tomorrow, check fences BEFORE letting them out.

🐾 Make Sure Their ID Tag is on Their Collar – A collar is useless without an ID tag! If they escape, an up-to-date tag gives them the best chance of getting home quickly.

🐾 Plan Background Noise – Choose calming music, brown noise, or a Netflix binge to help mask the howling wind.

🐾 Keep It Safe & Simple – One missed walk won’t hurt, but better safe than sorry. Get everything sorted today so tomorrow can be as stress-free as possible!

Stay safe, and let me know if you need any extra enrichment ideas! 🐶💨

♥️🐾Expectations: The More You Have, The Less Happy You Are♥️🐾

This is a lesson I learn over and over again—but somehow, it never really sticks. It’s a lesson I pass on to my clients every single week, yet when it comes to myself, I forget. Every. Single. Time.

I learned it first with Quinn. I expected her to be like my previous dogs, Tulla and Dexter—trained, focused, ready to work. Instead, she was a feral little whirlwind. The more I expected, the harder it became. But when I let go of my expectations and accepted her for who she was, everything changed. Now, because I expect nothing, I’m constantly delighted by everything she does.

This week, I was reminded of that lesson again. I submitted a 75-page, 22,000-word module for my Applied Animal Behaviour course—while running a business, training two high-energy cockers, and juggling life. I got an A minus … and my first reaction? Disappointment. But actually, just submitting it was a huge achievement.

And isn’t that what we do with our dogs? We set impossibly high standards. We assume they should behave a certain way, should train at a certain pace. But when we drop expectations and accept the dog in front of us, everything gets easier.

So today, I’m reminding myself—and you—to lower the expectations. Not because we shouldn’t aim high, but because when we expect too much, we steal our own happiness. Accept your dog. Accept yourself. And celebrate progress, not just perfection.

🗣️✨Rethinking Recall – It’s More Than Just “Come”👌🏻✨

Recall is one of the most important cues we teach our dogs—but have you ever thought about how many different types of recall we use in everyday life?

For me, recall isn’t just one cue; it’s a range of behaviours and cues that suit different situations. Here’s how I break it down with my dogs:
• Emergency Recall: I have a “get here now” cue, which means danger is ahead, and I need immediate action. This cue isn’t optional. It’s reserved for emergencies, and because I use it so rarely, my dogs respond without hesitation when I do.
• Change of Direction Recall: Sometimes, I don’t need my dogs to stop or come all the way back to me. I use “let’s go,” which simply means change direction. It’s helpful when we’re out and about and I spot something I’d rather avoid.
• Stay Close Recall: I have a specific cue for my dogs to ask them to stick closer. I use “with me.” These are my go-to cue when I need them to stay nearby but not necessarily stop what they’re doing.
• Alternative Recalls: Sometimes, recall isn’t about using the word “come.” It can be a behaviour like a hand touch, a middle position, or even walking at my side. All of these cues are different ways to bring my dogs to me.

🐾Here’s the key: Recall means asking your dog to choose you over everything else in their environment. That’s a huge deal! Whether it’s another dog, an interesting smell, or a squirrel, you’re asking your dog to leave behind what they want to investigate and come to you instead.

This is why recall should be treated with care and respect. Use it thoughtfully, and make it worth your dog’s while when they respond. A recall isn’t just a “command” (and if you know me, you know I dislike that word!)—it’s a conversation.

🐾Last night, I had a last-minute cancellation for my puppy class because, as the owner explained, “their puppy was already fully trained and knew everything.”

This got me thinking… life, and especially dog training, is never about knowing everything. It’s about the joy of learning, growing, and evolving.

No person or dog knows everything, and to me, that’s the beauty of it. I’ve owned dogs my entire life and worked professionally with them since 2012. I’ve completed countless qualifications, read more books than I can count, attended seminars, trained my own dogs, and worked with hundreds of others. And yet, there’s still a massive amount to learn. In fact, there’s more to learn about dogs than any of us could uncover in a thousand lifetimes—and isn’t that just incredible?

Dogs are always learning. Whether they’re a playful puppy or a wise senior, regardless of their breed, age, s*x, or lifestyle, they are constantly adapting to the world around them. The truth is, if you want to learn about dogs, they will never disappoint you. They will surprise you, challenge you, and teach you in ways you never expected.

The moment we think we know it all is the moment we stop growing. The magic of dogs is that they remind us to stay curious, to keep learning, and to do better—for them, for ourselves, and for the bond we share.

So, whether your dog is learning new tricks or simply learning about life, let them inspire you.

Why Work With Me?

🌟 What a day! 🌟

Today was full of variety and rewarding moments with three amazing one-to-one sessions! Here’s a little peek at what we got up to:

🐾 Arwen: This gorgeous girl kicked off the day with some brilliant scentwork. It’s such a joy to see a dog’s natural abilities shine when they’re sniffing out their target—plus, I managed to snap some photos of her in action! 📸

🐾 Calla: Next up was building confidence with the lovely Calla. We focused on helping her feel more at ease around new people and places. It’s such important work, and she’s making great strides already.

🐾 Malcolm: Finally, I met Malcolm—a complicated little lad whose family wants to ensure he’s living his very best life. We’re working together to understand his needs and help him feel happy and secure.

Days like these remind me just how unique every dog is—and how much their families care about doing the best for them.

Do you have a specific training goal in mind for your dog? Let’s chat! 🐶

⭐️🐾What is Flooding and why Isn’t the Answer in Dog Training🐾⭐️

Imagine teaching a child to swim by throwing them into the deep end of a pool. They might learn to swim, but they could also panic, sink, or need rescuing. Even if they stay afloat, they’ll likely never trust you near water again.

This explains flooding, a training method where a dog is forced to confront something they fear—like fireworks, the vet, or other dogs—with no way to escape. The idea is that they’ll “get over it” if exposed long enough. While it might suppress reactions temporarily, it often causes lasting harm.

The Fallout of Flooding

Flooding might seem like a quick fix, but it can lead to:
1. Broken Trust: Your dog may stop relying on you when they’re scared.
2. Suppressed, Not Solved: The fear doesn’t disappear; it’s hidden and ready to resurface.
3. New Trauma: Flooding can make fears worse or create new ones.
4. Aggression: Feeling trapped, your dog may lash out in self-defence, even if they’ve never been aggressive before.

For example, if a dog is afraid of other dogs, forcing them into a class or group walk to “get used to it” might seem logical. But while they may stop barking or lunging, it’s often because they’ve shut down from stress—not because they feel safe. This can lead to worsening fears or even aggressive behaviour in the future.

A Kinder Way: Gradual Exposure

A better approach is desensitisation and counterconditioning, which works by:
• Gradually introducing fears at a manageable level.
• Pairing them with positive experiences, like treats or play, to help your dog feel safe and confident.

For instance, if your dog fears other dogs, start at a distance where they feel comfortable. Reward calm behaviour and slowly reduce the distance over time.

Flooding may promise quick results, but the fallout—broken trust, lingering fear, or aggression—can last a lifetime. By choosing patience and compassion, you help your dog learn that the world is safe and that they can always count on you.

This type of Training isn’t about fixing behaviours quickly; it’s about changing emotions, building trust, confidence, and a bond that lasts a lifetime.

⭐️🐾Tail Wagging Isn’t Always a Sign of Happiness: Understanding Your Dog’s Body Language⭐️🐾

Did you know that tail wagging is one of the most commonly misunderstood dog behaviours? Many people believe that if a dog’s tail is wagging, it must mean they’re happy. However, this isn’t always the case.

A dog’s tail movement is just one part of their overall body language, and it’s important to look at the whole picture to understand how they’re feeling. For example:
• A high, stiff tail wagging quickly can indicate arousal, tension, or even aggression.
• A low, slow wag might show uncertainty or nervousness.
• If a dog is wagging their tail but their ears are flat, their body is cowering, and they’re avoiding eye contact, they’re likely feeling anxious or scared—not happy.

Context is everything. The same wag might mean different things in different situations, and it’s crucial to pay attention to the rest of your dog’s body language and the environment they’re in.

This ties into a broader issue: not all dogs are suitable for group classes. A dog that is frightened, barking excessively, or struggling to cope around other dogs needs a more tailored approach. Putting them into a class environment can overwhelm them, which is both unkind and counterproductive. It can even make their behaviour worse over time.

Remember: body language is a conversation. Take the time to listen to what your dog is telling you by looking at their entire body, the context, and how they’re responding to the environment. It’s one of the best ways to build a stronger, more understanding bond with your dog.

✨🤩2025🤩✨

New Year’s resolutions are everywhere right now. Maybe you’re thinking about getting fitter, eating healthier, or breaking a habit. The idea of starting fresh is exciting, isn’t it? But here’s the truth: change doesn’t happen overnight.

Both you and your dog are shaped by your unique personalities, habits, and experiences. Dogs, just like us, have things they enjoy doing, coping mechanisms, and behaviours they’ve learned over time. They also have genetic predispositions—some dogs are naturally more energetic or social, while others are more cautious or independent.

So when we’re trying to change behaviour—whether it’s teaching a dog to stop barking at the doorbell or trying to exercise more ourselves—it takes effort, consistency, and patience.

Let’s think about joining the gym. If you go once, you won’t magically get fitter. It’s the daily practice, the small steps, and the commitment over time that lead to real progress. Training your dog works exactly the same way.

A little bit of training every day builds your dog’s understanding and helps them learn new habits, just like regular exercise builds your strength. It’s up to you to put in the work.

If you’re looking to make changes for you and your dog this year, remember:
• Be patient: Real change takes time.
• Be consistent: Small, daily efforts add up.
• Celebrate progress: Every small win matters.

Change isn’t instant, but your effort will pay off. Let’s make 2025 the year we put in the work—for ourselves and for our dogs. You’ve got this!
