Black leghorn bantam male. There's still a lot of work yet too meet the proper exhibition standard for black males. They've come close to being jet black with correct undercolour but they still need more character and type.

Rosecombs

Iā€™ve had a few messages recently regarding the correct rosecomb for a leghorn. Im not saying this comb is perfect but in UK we have a lot of issues where the rosecomb can be forgotten about. The common issue is the leader of the rosecomb on a Leghorn should follow the curve of the scull.

-The texture (workings) on the comb varies as the standard in UK is actually very vague on how fine or extreme these workings should be.

-The comb should be firm, evenly set on the head. Square at the front and gradually tapering towards the back with a well defined spike or ā€˜leaderā€™.

-It should be balanced,so if you look at the front of the comb, it shouldnt be bigger on one side or other.

Below Iā€™ve added photos of two young males for comparison. I find the faults always come from the F1 males which are only 50:50 split, after 2 generations Iā€™ve got the combs near enough to how I want them, usually a full brother sister cross, although I dont recommend this in general but itā€™s one way I can breed a true rosecomb without breeding back to the father or mother who may be carrying a fault I donā€™t want to continue breeding from.

Far from maturity as yet but both examples showing the pros and cons of the head. The first being a F2 bird and the second being a F1 bird

Pile leghorn bantam pullets, rosecombs for all you lovers... A lot of people say you can't breed a clean pile, you've got too bleach them for showing...
Well here's a product of a blue red x pile on left, pure bred pile on right. Using blue based bird, will always dilute the colour it's crossed onto, with this cross in particular as you can see the white is much cleaner and not as rusty as the pure bred on the right
