Leporinus are a fascinating group of fish known for their strikingly bold and contrasting patterns. Native to South American rivers, these energetic swimmers belong to the family Anostomidae. Their most notable feature is their ability to jump out of the water, a behavior they often display in the wild. They can grow up to 18 inches (45 cm) in length, making them a sizable addition to any large aquarium. Their diet typically consists of plants, small invertebrates, and organic detritus. One fun fact is that their name “leporinus” is derived from the Latin word for “hare,” due to the way their mouth resembles a rabbit’s.

- **Appearance**: They have slender, silvery-white bodies with a single black mid-lateral stripe and a faint stripe along the lower part of their body. Their forked caudal fin and the black leading edge of the adipose fin add a touch of contrast.
- **Size**: They can grow up to 11.5 cm (4.5 inches) in length.
- **Habitat**: In the wild, they inhabit fast-moving waters with plenty of vegetation and a substrate of mud, silt, and rocks. They prefer environments with moderate to high oxygen levels.
