Is there anything better than watching dogs do what they were bred to do? When genetics take over, and they show traits that come naturally to their breed. It’s often not possible for our pet dogs to do the work their breeds were originally created for, but there are other ways of meeting their needs! Many people take their dog to the park and throw a ball for them. Maybe instead of throwing the ball, try another activity that will provide your dog with the mental stimulation that is required for their breed. Below is a video of 3 different ways a ball can be used to fulfil the breed traits of three different dogs. For a Labrador, finding and retrieving a hidden ball simulates finding and retrieving game when hunting. For a collie, herding the ball simulates herding sheep. And Malinois love to bite, so biting and tugging a ball is much more reinforcing for them than a game of fetch! Next time you’re out with your dog, try playing a game with them that allows them to fulfil their natural instincts!

Scout having a go at some agility today. Not his favourite thing, and his husky half doesn’t do particularly well in the heat, but he gave it a go!
