Gizmo has a very beautiful soft coat and her mum is taking very good care of it brushing it at home! But Gizmo got into some mess in a car park... π Most likely oil or petrol. That stuff must be nasty to lick off and impossible to brush it out so Gizmo came to me for a little extra help! π₯°
As Gizmo is going outside we left as much hair as possible, but backside had to be shaved as that was the sensible thing to do in order to remove mats with as less pain and discomfort as possible. Gizmo now has Bolero trim and seems to be very happy with it! I call this a naked bum trim - I love naked cat bums π It's very popular in the US for older cats that get matted on the back side.
Gizmo will be a teddy bear in a couple of months and soon hair will grow back fully. And hopefully no more car park trips π€£

This kitty has a very teenage personality! His mummy has more kitties at home and has no issues bathing others, but this one is climbing walls so he is coming every two weeks to get a professional bath. He produces a lot of skin oil and gets very very dirty ears and nails very quick π«§
βοΈβοΈβοΈDID YOU KNOWβ¦.
UNDERSTANDING MATTING AND PELTING
Cats have naturally very oily skin and hair, which requires regular baths and specialized grooming products to keep clean. As your cat sheds its fur, without proper grooming, this hair can stick together due to the natural oils, forming tangles. These tangles, if unnoticed or not promptly removed, can grow into larger knots known as mats, because under tangles the natural shedding process still continues, but hair cannot fall out. If formed mats are not removed, it can spread across the catβs body, resulting in a condition known as pelting.
Matting and pelting in cats can cause severe discomfort, pain, skin irritation, infections, and in extreme cases, even death. If a cat develops large mats or a pelt, the only effective way to remove it is to shave the catβs coat. However, depending on the catβs health, temperament, age, and other factors, shaving may need to be performed under a vetβs supervision to ensure itβs done safely.
Regular professional grooming appointments are a proactive measure to avoid matting and pelting in your feline friend. Professional grooming significantly reduces shedding and helps keep your catβs skin and coat clean, healthy, and mat-free.
