🐶 Let's chat about muzzle training 🐶

Muzzles are a precautionary measure, not an indication of aggression, they are valuable tools for a lot of situations whether that is in public or helpful in higher stress situations. Training your dog to wear one calmly can reduce stress and prevent accidents. 🐕‍🦺

In light of the new UK law for XL Bully Type breeds, it's essential that dog owners understand the value of muzzle training. Not just for the dogs and owners facing these challenges, but for everyone. 👥 The Guidelines state that Muzzles and Leads in public come into impact from the 31ST OF DECEMBER 2023. We have time to introduce muzzles in the most suitable way.

Muzzles can be a positive tool when introduced correctly, ensuring comfort and safety. 🌟 So, whether you're needing a muzzle for a specific training focus (prevention of eating inappropriate items, cooperative care at the vet or groomer, regulations, etc) or needing to follow the guidelines of the XL Bully law, it is important to introduce this useful skill to your dog properly. 💪

Selecting the right muzzle:
Any uncertainty when choosing a muzzle - consult with us to find the perfect fit. The Basket Muzzle design are advised due to prioritizing both safety and comfort.

Here at Riverside, Izzy our Registered Veterinary Nurse, is offering a free Muzzle Training Session for anyone wanting more information about how to get started. 😊

Together, we can ensure our furry friends are happy, comfortable, and safe in any situation. 🐶💙

Meet Sapphire, Tinkerbell and Eva!

They are a bonded trio of Shih Tzu's that love nothing more than cuddling up together or playing.
Sapphire and Tinkerbell are the most confident of the three and will take a lot of things in their stride they will happily meet people and have a fuss, and love nothing more than cuddling on a lap. Eva is a sensitive soul and will hang back and is at times worried so will need an understanding owner who will allow her to take things at her own pace. Once she is comfortable with someone new you will see her tail give a wag which is the best reward of all.
They haven't been used to walks so initially will need to be kept at home with access to the garden. Over time with a bit of patience and training they hopefully will enjoy going for walks. This would need to be in quiet places without lots of dogs or off lead dogs that would come over and frighten them.
They will need someone around most of the time to build up the time they are left for and will also need work on their house training in the home so a garden will be needed. They wouldn't be suitable to a family home with young children as they would find this all too much, but could live with teenagers if they are understanding of Eva's sensitive nature. They are looking to be the only dogs in the home and wouldn't like to share their home with cats.
They will make fantastic companions in their new home and have a lot of love to give.

You asked, we listened.

Emma Moore, as requested.

When you are passing a horse in a vehicle you need to allow 2 metres clearance. This means that if the horse turns to face towards the car or kicks out it will not hit your vehicle keeping the horse, rider and driver safe.

🌿 Why you shouldn't throw sticks for dogs 🌿

Some dogs love playing fetch and sticks may seem like a great natural toy to throw for them, but this can lead to a host of problems. 'Staking' injuries are something we see far too often, where a dog has become impaled by running into the pointy end of a stick or tripping with one in their mouth. Injuries to the mouth, abdomen and chest are common and can require surgery and prolonged care.

Dogs can also get stick splinters stuck between their teeth or in the softer parts of their mouths. Ingesting dirty parts of a splintered stick can lead to gastric upset and infections.
Play it safe and switch to a dog-safe stick alternative, there are plenty out there that even look like the real thing!

Wish more people took notice of this there would be less dog injuries
Do you realise you could shorten the length of your dog’s mobility and life with these They are just a lazy Dog Walkers tool !!!

Repeatedly throwing a ball for a dog to chase will burn off energy and wear it out right??

WRONG , to much hard physical exercise does more harm than good.

Apart from the obvious physical issues and injuries it causes in the joints, there are many other issues associated with repetitive ball chasing.
Dogs can get over aroused, their heartrate and respiration will rapidly increase, and they will have very poor impulse control.
They may jump around or on you, have dilated pupils, chattering teeth, be mouthy, spin, pace or circle, or be very vocal.
When a dog gets in this hyper aroused state the body releases adrenaline, then with the repeated exposure to this adrenaline from continued ball chasing, cortisol gets released into the body.
These hormones can hang around for hours even days or weeks.
Therefore if your dog is engaging in these activities daily, the body never has time to recover so dogs are over excitable or reactive.

“But my dog loves the ball, it's his favourite thing’. Is what I hear all the time
They love it because that is what they know, it's addictive and that is what they associate with your walks.

There are other more mentally stimulating and enriching ways to exercise your dog's.
A walk to gather scents and go exploring,
Try a "your choice" walk and let your dog decide which way to go.
Go "seek seek" find the toy games.
My boys love training walks because of the fun interaction with them.
You can still sometimes play ball games with your dog, but try a ball on a rope and bring the game back to you.

Your dog won't miss the ball as they will be enjoying a much more balanced walk
