🩺 Cool Case Alert 🐱

🩷 Lovely Bella was in to check her red blood cell (RBC) count today. She is soooo good for her blood sample!

Bella has a very serious condition called immune mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) where her immune system attacks and kills her red blood cells.

Last month Bella became severely anemic and required a blood transfusion to save her life. Cat blood donors are very rare and in emergency situations, we must rely on dog blood donors. This lifesaving dog to cat blood transfusion is called "xenotransfusion" 🐶✌️😻

Karen's Labrador Sid was the lucky blood donor! Sid's blood stabilized Bella while the medications to suppress her immune system took effect - thankfully, her body is no longer attacking her RBCs and is making new RBCs at a normal rate.

🩷 Cool case alert 🐾

Coco has Addison's disease - a condition where the adrenal glands do not produce hormones that help the body deal with stress and to balance the body's electrolytes. Dogs with Addison's disease require lifelong medication and become very ill if their medication is skipped.

Coco's mum had a special medical alert tag made - If Coco was ever lost and found, her condition will be known so she can quickly be provided with appropriate medical care - so clever! 🐶⚕️🏷️

Catching up with friends old and new, SO many adorable pups, free dental checks, and… ICE CREAM 🤤🐶🍦

Our kitty dating profiles for the cats of Lothian Cat Rescue were a HIT too 💕 We so hope that some of their longest standing residents make their way into furrrrrrrrrrever homes soon 😻

Happy Saturday 🩷🐾☀️

Can you guess which one of these hungry hounds ate the pack of raisins?

We didn't know either, so with the help of our wonderful vet student Mireille, both Sam and Cara had to be made sick 🤢 Turns out it wasn't the labrador after all, it was Sam the sight hound!

Grapes, raisins and dates are all toxic to dogs. Lucky for Sam, we were able to make him sick in time to remove the toxic fruits from his stomach. Hopefully Sam will think twice before raiding the pantry for a healthy snack 🤞

Everyone, meet Olivia!✨

Hi everyone, Karen here 🙂
I’m very pleased and proud to introduce our new Veterinary Surgeon Olivia Halloran, who will be working alongside me and the rest of the team here to provide care for you and your pets ❤️ Olivia is a warm, caring and extremely talented vet, and I feel very fortunate that she chose us - please join me in welcoming her to the practice and team 🙌🏻🥳

“I’m so excited to be working with Karen and the team at West Edinburgh Vets, and I can’t wait to start meeting local pets and their humans! I’ve been working as a vet in Edinburgh for the past few years, and gained my Veterinary Degree here at Edinburgh’s Royal (Dick) University, but I actually grew up in Switzerland… Edinburgh has my heart now though (Corstorphine more specifically!) Animals of all types, shapes and sizes have always been my passion, so prior to studying veterinary medicine I completed a Masters Degree in Zoology, and also spent time working at Dogs Trust in Glasgow, which I absolutely loved. Since qualifying I’ve completed an internship in exotic animal medicine and surgery, so I’m always excited when I see scaled or feathered visitors booked to see me! My passion for ensuring animal welfare of all species, and getting to know new people, means that I feel lucky to be doing what I’m doing every day. In my free time you’ll find me hanging out with my own dog Roo, rock climbing with my partner Mischa, or doing arts and crafts. I’m looking forward to meeting you all soon!”

This pretty little tortie first came into Nicola's life 6 years ago with her flatmate.
Her likes include:
- Yapping at the birds
- Hissing at guests
- Sitting in the sink
- Any and all food, including but not limited to - chickpeas, black beans, prawns and chicken.

Her dislikes include:
- The vets
- Guests
- Closed doors
- If you move an inch or talk to loudly when she's sitting on your lap.

This sassy little queen makes life more fun!

"This is Chip. Chip started off a patient that came into the clinic when he was only weeks old for his first vaccinations, and from that moment I fell in love with him. Chip is such a playful boy, and has such a big personality for such a little guy!

He is a brilliant natured boy who brings so many smiles and laughs !

*Apparently Bertie hates big toes so much he tried to nibble them off!

Next up is our behind-the-scenes man Craig and his fabulous boy Sam. Here's Sam's story:

🧡 Sam 🧡
Craig adopted Sam in 2020, after he was rescued by a fantastic charity in Northern Ireland 🫶🏼 He spent the first 10 months of his life on a chain outside with no shelter or company, and cried so much that neighbours reported the situation, so thankfully his owners eventually agreed to hand him over 🙌🏻
For a young dog he’s had a lot to cope with, and so still finds some situations quite challenging, but the good news is he now has a bed in every room of the house, a coat for all seasons, and is affectionately known as ‘The Prince’ by all who know him 👑🐶😆

We love a happy ending!

It's national pet day on Thursday so naturally we're making it into a week 🤭

Starting off with our client care assistant Julie and her lovely boy Hobbes:

"This is Hobbes our little rescue cat.My Colleague Angela from work found him living rough. She brought him to the practice where Karen neutered him and patched him up. He stayed in the practice for a while before coming to live with us. He was completely feral when he came and had to have his own room in the house. Now after months of tender loving care he is amazing. He purrs and loves to be stroked. He sleeps on my bed now with our other cats. I can’t imagine life without him ❤️. "

🐁 It's been a Rat-tastic day!

🧀 Gorgonzola, Camembert, Halloumi and Roquefort were in for their first health checks today 🩺

🩷 Their owners Nat, who is 12 and his sister Faith, who is 9 take amazing care of them! They are weighed daily and their food amount tailored specifically to their growth pattern. Gouda job guys! 😄
