Doing some hand touches with Buddy. This command is very simple to teach any dog, it’s a great way to get your dogs attention.
It can also be used in situations where dogs may feel too threatened or anxious to give a “look at me” command.
Step One: Hold a treat in a closed had and hold your other hand up with a flat palm (as seen in the video)
Step Two: Hold the closed hand with the treat in it away from them and put the open palm towards them
Step Three: As soon as they investigate the open hand and their nose touches it say “touch” and reward
Increase the distance you hold your hand away gradually 😁🐾

This is Rex and Kirsty, Rex is a Labrador Pup who is working on Recall, Lead work and basic obedience. Kirsty is a first time dog owner.
This pair have worked hard over the past few months. Working with calmness, proximity, and disengagement. Rex has still got some work to do but dog training is forever progressing and Kirsty understands this well.
I can’t thank Kirsty enough for being the responsible and dedicated owner that she is. She knows Rex should not be off the lead without a solid recall. She also understands that dog interaction is not all about dogs running crazy around each other. She also understands that Rex shouldn’t be running up to every dog to say hello.
The video you see is the result of Kirsty building value in herself, confidence building and working with close proximity. She has chosen a quiet place to do her training, another very responsible choice. Along with recall she is giving Rex some obedience tasks to do while off lead.
Kirsty is absolutely rocking her dog training journey and I have a massive amount of respect for her.
My own dog struggles with reactivity and our biggest problem and his biggest fear is off lead dogs running up to him. This occurs daily and the amount of irresponsible dog owners there are is ridiculous. Not only are you causing fear and stress in the reactive dog, you’re putting your own dog in danger. I witness this with other owners daily as well.
If your dog doesn’t come back when you let them off the lead, whether they are friendly or not, they should not be off that lead. Get a trainer to improve your recall or lead issues.
You can be prosecuted under the Control of Dogs Act 2010 if your dog has poor recall. And if your dog gets attacked by an ON LEAD reactive dog, you will get told to have your dog remain on lead.
Thanks to all the responsible and hard working owners like Kirsty! ❤️
