December is right around the corner, and like us, our pets might need a little extra TLC over the winter months. ❤️ Here are some common winter hazards to look out for to keep your pet happy and safe:

🔐 Accidentally locking pets out. Not realising that our pets have followed us out of the back door has happened to the best of us, but in winter, it's even more important to make sure they can stay safe and warm inside.
❄️ Antifreeze and de-icer. Both are incredibly toxic for animals and can kill them. Keep antifreeze out of the reach of pets and clean up any spills thoroughly.
🥀 Poisonous plants. Festive favourites like holly, ivy and poinsettia are all toxic to pets if they eat them. Keep them out of your pet's reach, or use artificial plants to decorate your home.
🥶 Snowy paws. Snow can build up on a pet's paws and cause discomfort, so prepare paws by keeping hair between pads trimmed so there's less hair for the snow to gather on.
🚘 Sheltering cats. Cats often shelter under cars or will even climb inside the bonnet beside a warm engine. Always check your vehicle for visitors or knock on the bonnet before you start it.
🧂 Salt and grit. Wash your pet's paws if they come into contact with salt and grit, as it can be irritating. Applying a thin layer of paw butter to your dog's pads could also help protect them from drying out or cracking.

Before ripping open door number one on your advent calendars, it’s important to remember to always keep them out of reach of snooping snouts and prying paws 🐾

Chocolate contains a substance called theobromine, which is perfectly safe for humans, but toxic for dogs, cats and rabbits ⚠️ The seriousness of chocolate poisoning depends on how much chocolate your pet has eaten, how big they are, and the cocoa content of the chocolate 🍫

In severe cases, chocolate toxicity can cause:
• Fast breathing or panting
• Shaking, trembling and tremors
• High temperature (fever)
• Seizures
• A fast heart rate
• High blood pressure

As much as you do to avoid it, we understand that accidents can happen 😟 So if you suspect your pet has eaten chocolate, keep the packaging and call your vet immediately 🧑‍⚕️ Each year our Pet Hospital teams see chocolate poisoning cases, mainly from pets sneakily finding their way to the goods 🍫

Do you have a Pug or a Pug-Cross in your family?

Could you help the The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) with their latest research?

They are looking into how the health of pure-bred Pugs compares to to their cross-bred cousins and it would be great if you got involved!

Taking your four-legged friend on walkies improves both their wellbeing and yours 🥰

But heading out usually involves walking on roads or pavements, which can be dangerous for our dogs if we’re not careful! ⚠️

As it’s , let’s refresh your knowledge with our Vet’s top tips 👇

🐶 Keep your dog on a short lead near roads, avoid using an extender lead as it won’t give you the control you need
👀 Teach your dog awareness, they won’t automatically know to stop and wait at a curb until it’s safe to cross
💡 You should always make sure that both you and your dog can be seen, especially when it’s dark
🗺️ Plan your route and stick to crossings, this can ensure you avoid roads without pavements
✅ Be prepared with a collar, tag, microchip and insurance, these can all help if your dog lets lost, injured or involved in an accident

🎆**Last Minute Firework Tips For Fearful Pets!**🎆

Tonight is going to be a big night for fireworks and if you have a pet who finds them stressful, it is not too late to help them!

🐶 Dogs🐶

🐶 Tire them out while it is still light.

If your dog has already been scared by the fireworks before tonight, they are likely to start to anticipate them as soon as the light starts to fade, so get them out for a good walk well before this happens.

And don't forget mental exercise is also very tiring for dogs. So feed their meals today from snuffle mats, puzzle balls or just scatter feed in your kitchen. Anything to give their brain a workout and encourage them to rest it (by sleeping!) later on.

🐶 Make a den

If you haven't already, make a cosy, comfy and covered den for them to rest in. This will muffle the noises and dogs feel more secure when they can hide.

Given the night is tonight, rather than creating a whole new place, see if you can get something set up where they normally sleep.

Don't forget to close the curtains as well.

🐶 Turn up the tunes!

Music with a heavy beat is the best choice to disguise the firework noise. Opt for something like African Drumming or Drum and Bass!

🐶 Fill up their Kong

If you haven't got a toy you can stuff with a tasty, sticky snack like peanut butter (make sure it's not sugar free so it doesn't contain Xylitol) or doggy paste, I would recommend you head out and get one!

Chewing and licking for a prolonged period will not only distract your dog, it is also a really relaxing activity for them and, again, will tire out their brains and help them to snooze once they are done.

🐶 Comfort them (but not too much!)

It is important that we reassure our dogs that everything is OK tonight but it is also
vital we don't over-do the cuddles and attention because we can easily make them think that we are scared as well and that will worry them more!

So if they are resting and chilled, give them the occasional pat but don't smother them.

If they are panting and stressed, sit with them and be a calming presence but try to communicate that you aren't worried and they shouldn't be either.

🐱Cats🐱

🐱 Lock the cat flap

Make sure your cat is in for the night well before dusk and lock the cat flap so they cannot get back out.

You will need to provide a litter tray if they normally toilet outside

🐱 Leave them be

Generally our cats are fairly sensible and if they are worried, they will hide away until it is all over. If yours does this, just let them carry on, and maybe provide a cosy blanket if they aren't somewhere soft!

🐰Rabbits and outdoor pets🐰

If you can bring the hutch into the garage for the night that can be helpful but for most small pets, covering their bedroom over with a nice thick blanket and making sure they have lots of bedding to hunker down in is enough to get them though the night.

I hope this helps your pets and you have a quiet (as possible!) night!
