Today is World Diabetes Day!

Dogs and cats - like people - can also be diagnosed with diabetes. On the 14th of November, every year, World Diabetes Day is held to help spread awareness of this condition.

Diabetes is a condition in which an animal can not regulate their blood sugar levels. In dogs diabetes causes a lack of insulin production, whereas in cats, their body doesn't respond correctly to insulin production.

Clinical signs that a pet may have diabetes include:
🐾 Excessive drinking
🐾 Excessive urination
🐾 Excessive eating without gaining weight
🐾 Lethargy
🐾 Poor coat condition
🐾 Breath that smells like pear drops.

Through regular medication, monitoring blood samples, diet management, and exercise diabetes can be managed well in pets!

If you are concerned your furry friend may have diabetes, please phone your local branch or use PetsApp to book an appointment with one of our vets.

❄️Winter Dangers - Antifreeze

Antifreeze contains ethylene glycol, which is toxic to animals when metabolized in the body. Even a small amount of antifreeze can be harmful to pets. It is a fast acting toxin, causing kidney damage, kidney failure, and fatality.

It’s important to take sensible precautions to prevent your animals from coming into contact with antifreeze.

▪️Any antifreeze spillages should be cleaned up immediately.

▪️Avoid exercising dogs near parked cars where spillages are potentially higher risk.

▪️Ensuring antifreeze is clearly labelled and stored away safely, unaccessible to pets.

▪️Ensure old containers of antifreeze are disposed of appropriately.

Contact your vet immediately if your pet may have come into contact with antifreeze - time is vital to treatment.

Thank you so much, Megan, for the review. It really means a lot to the Westport team to hear from you.

Today is Remembrance Sunday.

Remembrance Sunday is a national opportunity to remember the service and sacrifice of all those who have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life. A nationally televised remembrance has been held for decades at the Cenotaph monument in central London.

The red poppy belongs to the Royal British Legion - a charity created by veterans of World War One. They say that the red poppy represents remembrance and hope.

The purple poppy is a symbol of remembrance in the United Kingdom for animals that served during wartime.

❄️Winter Dangers - Dark Nights

As winter draws in and the clocks change, morning and evening walks are getting dark.

▪️Outdoor cats who wear collars, having a reflective collar can help them become more visible near lights and traffic.

▪️Dogs having light up collars is ideal to ensure they are visible. Full light-up collars can work best for longer hair haired dogs. Having reflective coats and leads is great for visibility near lights or traffic.

▪️Owners should consider wearing light up and reflective items. For personal safety, but also ensures they are visible to members of public and traffic. Light up reflective arm bands are a great item to help visibility.

▪️Even with good recall, if you can't see your dog off lead in the dark, they should be kept on lead where possible.

▪️We always recommend walking in well lit areas for safety on dark mornings and nights.

▪️Some animals get spooked easily in the dark. Ensuring your pets' microchip and ID tag details are up to date is the best way to ensure that should they ever get lost, you can be contacted.

If you are not sure how to check or update your pet's microchip details, the veterinary team can help.

Team Westport wishes you all a Happy Hallowe'en!

Ghosts and ghouls, vampires, witches, werewolves, and all sorts of scary monsters may be out and about today!

Hallowe'en can be a fun time for us, but a scary time for our furry friends! Here are our top tips for keeping them safe during spooky season:
🎃 Walk dogs before it gets dark outside
🎃 When trick-or-treaters are out and about, keep pets indoors with cosy bedding or a safe space to hide
🎃 Don't force costumes onto pets that aren't happy wearing them - this can cause a lot of stress
🎃 Keep Hallowe'en treats (e.g. chocolates and sweets) out of reach of pets - these can be toxic and cause gastrointestinal upset!

Have fun, and stay safe from spooky monsters!

Westport Vets are fundraising for Guide Dogs
⭐️NEW ITEMS AVAILABLE⭐️

The wonderful Rikke Hogg has kindly donated a fantastic new selection of handmade hats and headbands for us to sell for charity. They are available to buy from our Linlithgow and South Queensferry braches.

Rikke's hats and headbands are beautifully made, super cosy and colourful, and are just £5 each. All money from sales is being donated to Guide Dogs UK.

Every day 250 people in the UK start to lose their sight. Raising money for Guide Dogs helps the charity's invaluable work to make sure that people living with sight loss don't lose their freedom as well.

Westport Vet's continue to welcome donations of wool for Rikke, as she makes and donates hats to many deserving charities and organisations.
