Today is World Honey Bee Day!
Honey Bees are important pollinators - without them we would struggle to keep growing fruits, vegetables, and other plants!
Honey bees live in hives (or colonies) consisting of one queen bee, worker bees, and drones. The queen bee is in charge of the whole hive and laying eggs for the next generation. Worker bees are always female and are in charge of finding food, as well as protecting the hive! The drones are male bees which mate with the queen. A single honey bee hive can house up to 50,000 honey bees.
To help keep honey bees pollinating some bee friendly flowers you can plant include lavender, sunflowers, wild bergamot, crocus, and rosemary.

Muzzles are a sign of a responsible owner
We recommend every dog is muzzle trained, this is so that when a muzzle may be required, it is not a strange item or stressful event. You should also consider that some ferry transportation rules require muzzles worn on deck...never judge a muzzle, respect it.

Local Hero Award winner Eddie Hughes is continuing his fundraising mission by running marathons for Breast Cancer Now.
Eddie ran the Edinburgh half marathon in May, he's doing the Great North Run Newcastle in September and the Glasgow half marathon in October.
His aim is to raise £4000 this year which would bring his fundraising total to £70,000 for Breast Cancer Now.

Westport Vets is an ISFM Cat Friendly Clinic and we’re all about showing our feline friends some love!
Play provides a safe outlet for our cats to perform predatory behaviours such as stalking, chasing, pouncing and biting. For cats, these behaviours are essential to meet their needs as a species.

Blue-green algae is a term used to describe a group of bacteria called cyanobacteria.
Please be vigilant near open bodies of water.
▪️Blue-green algae is toxic.
▪️Do not let your dog drink from, paddle, or swim in water containing blue-green algae.
Linlithgow Loch and Beecraigs Loch have a history of being Blue-Green Algae hotspots.
We recommend checking local council websites or online sources prior to visiting areas of water to check if they are safe.
Call your vet immediately if you suspect poisoning.

Harry enjoyed his licki-mat and snuffle mat enrichment on his stay at our South Queensferry practice! Enrichment can be defined as meeting all of an animal’s needs as closely as possible to how they would be met in their natural environment, in order to empower them to engage in species-typical behaviours in healthy and appropriate ways (Bender and Strong, 2019). Enrichment is an essential part of a dog’s everyday life but becomes even more important when they are unable to move about freely, exercising and exploring in a way they normally would on their walks or within their home or garden environment. Meet Dutch and Mr Ripley the Bernese Mountain Dogs! These beautiful boys were an absolute pleasure to be with on their recent practice visit at Linlithgow! You may recognise them - Dutch in particular - as he was on Westport Vets Scotland Squad this year. A pair of strikingly handsome gentle giants, with an endless love for human attention and affection - such glorious dogs - inside and out!😍 We had a good giggle getting photos as Mr Ripley wanted nothing more than to lean into our legs for a massage 😂 Dutch and Mr Ripley are cool, calm, confident, content and comical. Leo graduated Block 1 of Confidence Clinics at Linlithgow!🤩 ▪️Confidence Clinics are a block of 6 sessions, at Linlithgow these are done with RVN Carena when the practice is closed. ▪️Working on how Leo feels inside the practice, building a bond and trust with him for handling tasks, using veterinary equipment, muzzle training, target work and we worked with Vet Yasmin. Our aim in these sessions was to get Leo's vaccinations done stress-free and help how he feels being handled by the veterinary team for future visits. ▪️Leo has excelled in sessions and has been great fun to work with. Every dog is different so sessions are tailored to the individual dog, working at the dogs pace. Using play and lots of movement - and tricks with Leo which he finds high value so we use these to build on contact, handling and how he feels both in the environment, with Carena and the vet. ▪️For his vaccination we spent time with Vet Yasmin building up confidence with her amd the consult room - you can see the results of this in the video - the slow tail wag turning into a non-stop wagging propeller! ▪️Successful results would not been managed without the dedication of Leo's lovely owner - she has worked hard training between sessions and doing little practice visits between sessions, which has allowed Leo to build a bond with Receptionist Jessica. Buster Collars = cone of fame! All dogs will need to wear a Buster collar at some stage or several stages in their life. Getting your dog used to wearing a Buster collar takes the stress away when they actually need one! Often they are needed without warning should your dog sustain an injury or wound. So we have made a wee demo on how this is easily done - taking the stress away from your dog and from owners for future use. Buster collars have many uses! 🔹️They protect surgical wounds from dog licking them - which creates infection and can cause breakdown. 🔹️Not only wounds after neutering but also any wound types for example cut paws or broken nails 🔹️They protect skin issues/irritations/hot spots 🔹️Often used after dental surgery - to prevent dog rubbing face which can damage sutures and cause wound breakdown 🔹️Protect Sore ears from scratching 🔹️Protect Eyes - from rubbing/scratching infections/irritations/treatments ....and more! If your dog has a Buster collar they flatten and store very easily. It's a great item to keep in case you need it! Bear in mind if your dog was young when they got theirs it may no longer be the correct size now but we can help you check this too. The date was chosen to honor the memory of Colonel Edward Donald Malcolm, who passed away on that day in 1930. We are celebrating National Westie Day with Linlithgows legendary Westie Jock!♥️ 🤍The 16th Laird of the MacCullum-Malcolm played a prominent role in the development of the West Highland White Terrier. 🤍Originally bred to catch small rodents, today the West Highland White Terrier is known for capturing the hearts of anyone who is devoted to dogs. The breed is so beloved that they are celebrated each year with their own pet holiday: National Westie Day! 🤍Westie Coat Colors: As the breed’s name implies, the West Highland White Terrier has only one coat color. This select shade can be traced back to the 1600s, when Colonel Malcolm of Poltalloch shot and killed his dark-furred terrier, mistaking his four-legged hunting companion for a fox. 🤍Long Live the Westie! Average life span of the West Highland White Terrier ranges from 12 – 16 years. 🤍Before being dubbed the West Highland Terrier, the Westie was known by two other names. As the breed originated thanks to the efforts of Edward Donald Malcolm, the 16th Laird of Poltalloch, the Westie was first called the Poltalloch Terrier.
