Thanks for those of you that let us know you saw the post about cancelling lessons tomorrow. Keep an eye out on here over the winter for updates ❄️
Today the horses were enjoying the sun on their backs and even tho they had hay, they preferred to dig through the snow to the grass!

Yesterday was a sad day here as we said goodbye to Tim. And for those of you wondering, yes it will be the same Tim that you learned to ride on all those years ago! He was an old man who just decided yesterday was his day.

He arrived here in 2004, owned by Moray Riding for the Disabled along with Blair and Corrie. “The Three Amigos”.

For many years we used him too for our lessons, his big party piece was stepping up onto a box like a circus pony! 🎪 He was in yesterday, involved in all the Halloween fun. Getting cuddles from everyone that loved him and saying his goodbyes.

He chose a Wednesday, RDA day, his biggest and most important day of the week for so many years, when the sun was shining🌞And as he left, Corrie gave a wee nicker as she said goodbye to the third Amigo🐴

Well Benji, your character was larger than life. So much so, I even wrote a book about you and your adventures during the covid lockdown. He was chief lawnmower for the whole of Cranloch.

His size was small, but his heart and mischievousness could not have been any bigger.
“Benjis escaped!”,
“Benjis in the feed room!”,
“Benji knocked over my wheelbarrow”,
“Benji has itched on the trailer and broken its lights!”… 24 years I’ve been hearing this and had to go running to find him and fix his doing. But no more.

He originally lived in Rathven near Buckie with a lady called Evelyn. She took him for walks giving local kids a shotty round the streets. I’m not sure if she had him from a foal, but there was a few stories about him escaping. One through the window of a derelict house, and another involved him being hit by a car. Poor boy. He clearly always had an adventurous nature!

Then on arriving at Cranloch, he got thrown into riding school life, teaching kids to ride. He took part in our pantomimes, our ponies grand national, was thrown in with a new horse to keep it company and also with Archie’s new lambs. He soon became “leader of the flock” and they followed him everywhere. (This became very handy for us!)

But most importantly, he was companion to so many of our oldies when they retired. He got on with anyone and so every year he wintered in a field of long lush grass with another retiree. He outlived so many of them.

The rest of the year, he usually lived with the bull or the sheep. This was because for the last 10years he has had no teeth and so required long grass all year. Benji and Vader became great friends, not so sure he loved the sheep though as they tended to use him as a climbing frame when he lay down!

His lack of teeth meant that his tongue was always hanging out. Much to the enjoyment of everyone that loved him. It suited his cheeky character.

Whilst being ridden he was never much of a leader, he preferred to follow. But when it came to mischief, Benji was always first. Even this afternoon, he disappeared off and I found him in the garden eating all the pears that had blown off the tree. This was one of his favourite places. It was also close to mums washing line which was another favourite scratching point!

Latterly he became Archie’s pony. And for the last 7 years has enjoyed a leisurely pace, wandering down to the woods for a picnic. Your first pony is a very special one. Even if they do stand on your foot to get to their feed bucket or knock you over when they scratch against you.

I have millions and millions of photos of Benji and his antics. I have posted just a few. Never will a day pass when I don’t think of you as I walk past a gate way you barged through or a feed bin you knocked over. And every year when the pears fall from the tree we will remember this was your time🐴

There is going to be thousands of broken hearts as people read this. Maggie was like your favourite granny. She was just so kind. If your kid was riding her, you knew they were in safe hands and would have a ball.

The old lady liked to get going and have some fun, but equally she loved to stand and get a cuddle. It never even crossed her mind to bite, kick, rear or buck. It just wasn’t in her. The experience that our old horses bring to folk learning to ride is invaluable. But it never gets any easier to say goodbye to them.

Just yesterday as Maggie, Ria and Lady trotted across for their feed, I was thinking “slow down it’s slippy!”, but I was also grateful to see them feeling so well. The old ladies will miss you Maggie. As will we.❤️🐴

Flannagan has been named “Horse of the Weekend” at the RDA virtual National Championships!

Well, as any of you that know me already know, I think Flannagan is fantastic. And it has just become official🥳

After winning his dressage to music class and his countryside challenge class at the RDA virtual National Championships this weekend, Flannagan, at 28years old, has been chosen as the horse of the weekend! 🐴 He will receive a special numnah signed by Olympic rider Lottie Fry😊

A massive well done to all the horses and riders that took part. Especially to Tinkerbelle, Tyson, Flannagan and Champ who were all places in the top 3 of their classes. So proud of them all🐴🐴🐴🐴
