Introducing a very chill addition; BPH Nala. Nala, a brown aph, has joined our hedgery from and will hopefully be paired with Archer in the near future, both are very special USA imports, Nala ofcourse from the BPH hedgery. I'm hoping they can do very good things for the light UK gene pool.
I can't thank Toni at enough for this super lady, the photos show just how bright, healthy and Zen Nala is, a testament to Toni's care and dedication.

Please make sure that breeders you buy from are using healthy lineage, especially if it's imported, it would be devastating for this disease to make a comeback for the sake of certain colours etc.

The World Initials Database is kept as updated as we possibly can. Breeders that are signed up to THP Registry have links to their database, which is why their herd name is blue. I get asked about colour a lot, Judith has kindly put together a fresh guide, i recommend the hedgehog program as *the* place to go for most queries, a total fountain of knowledge :)

The wild type of a species is a color that is displayed when there are no visible color mutations present. This color cannot be bred out as it’s written in the basic DNA of any species and it cannot be altered in the same way that color mutations can be bred out or altered by selection. In animal ...

Lets talk....barred cages.
In the UK barred cages have long been seen as an unnecessary danger. However they are still popular with new owners often poorly advised by pet shops or back yard breeders.

What are the dangers?
Well there are three major risks.
1) Hibernation - In the UK the weather can be unpredictable, some days going from 15c to 5c overnight...barred cages are very difficult to keep warm. Zoozone 2's and Vivariums offer solid sides to keep the heat inside the enclosure, offering a more stable heat for your hedgehog. In many cases hedgehogs can go into hibernation simply by a drop of a couple of degrees.

2) Broken legs, hedgehogs are terrible climbers. Fantastic at climbing up but disastrous at climbing down. Most of the time they will just drop to the ground. There has been a number of cases were hedgehogs have broken their legs from the fall or have caught their limb while falling and broken it that way. Limbs rarely heal well and this often leads to amputation. Even with the bars higher than you think your hedgehog can reach, your hedgehog can still use their wheel, house or toys to stand on to reach the bars.

3) Getting stuck, like with number 2, they climb the bars and will try to escape out of the bars, in less solid cages they can bend the bars enough to get their head stuck (see pic). We have heard of one case of a hedgehog dying with its neck stuck in the bars of its cage. In most cases the hedgehog is discovered and free'd however if firmly stuck with a bar pressed against its neck for a length of time suffocation unfortunately inevitable.

So what do we recommend?

The large zoozone 2 is great, although for slightly more you can get a 4 ft vivarium from swell reptiles. Vivariums offer privacy, warmth and safety for your hedgehog.
We advise giving your hedgehog at the very minimum a 3ft living enclosure, a large play pen for explore time and a good solid wheel.

Although ideally 4ft and over would offer your hedgehog ample space to run, stretch and play. As well as constant access to a good solid wheel and a play pen for explore time.

If you do own a cage we advise covering the majority of the bars in plexiglass to prevent climbing and to give your hedgehog a more stable warm environment (and some much needed privacy)

We welcomed Archer this week, a young import from the lovely dragonstone ranch in America! We are very lucky to have him here with us. We'll post some updates once he's settled from the travelling.
He's a quad striped red eyed apricot (not albino!), the lighter colours are slightly less common/popular than the greys/browns but we think he's stunning! :)

We can certainly tell that winter is just around the corner. Hibernation is very common around this time of year top tips to try to prevent hibernation are:

✅ check twice a day on the temperature inside your hedgehogs vivarium. It can sometimes be a lot cooler inside than it is in the room.

✅ avoid taking your hedgehog outside your home unless it’s for a vet trip and always use a heat pad.

✅ if you find your hedgehog hibernating react fast but calmly. Slowly heat the hedgehog up using your body heat or wrapped up in a blanket on a heat pad.

❌ do not put a hibernating hedgehog into water.

❌ do not put your hedgehog directly onto a heat pad, warming up too quickly can cause overheating.

How to tell your hedgehog is hibernating or has recently tried to hibernate.

‼️ his stomach feels cool to the touch.

‼️ he’s tightly balled and won’t unball.

‼️ his breathing is shallow and quiet.

‼️ he’s wobbling on his feet.

Pygmy hedgehogs don’t have the body mass to successfully hibernate. It’s important that they’re brought around quickly.

If your hedgehog doesn’t start to come around after 1 hour please take him to the vet.
