After a week off with flu!!! 😷 we are back working on our sports training & chase was very excited to get back into it today 😀
I love having a goal of what I am training towards with my dogs, be it obedience shows, IGP, Rally , it gives me reason for these little mini sessions 😀
What could you guys do with your dogs? Day Training with Stanley
Our Day Training dogs get the benefits of learning from both us and the other dogs at our training centre. Young Stanley is a young adolescent, border terrier & as very typical at this age has started to find other dogs much more exciting then his owners or us at the centre… so we have all decided to do some day training with Stanley to work on his engagement, recall away from the other dogs and general obedience and he is doing fantastic!! Hate… a bit of a strong word, but we have a deep emotional connection with our dogs, they share our home and they are one of the family! So when your dog becomes an adolescent jerk, 😀strong emotions can come up!!
We find the most mischievous teenagers, are actually those who are extremely smart and just need a job!! Something them & their owner can do and practise daily to give them that mental stimulation!
Doing something with your dog can really help build a bond & help you train through this rough time!!
We are weekly told by new clients that they have taken their adolescent dog to a trainer to be told how to “correct” or suppress behaviour- where by doing this, that genetic itch, that needs to be scratched WILL leak out elsewhere!! Ie by biting the lead, by biting clothes, by ignoring recall, by destroying your home, by obsessive barking to name just a few!!

18 months ago I found out my girlie had hip dysplasia- since the diagnosis we have worked extremely hard with excellent physiotherapist, daily stretches and strengthening exercises, water treadmill and now swimming!! 💦
Her exercise is restricted, which means she can’t do what she loves and run everyday full speed - although she is now allowed to do this more then she was as she is so strong now and her body is supporting those poorly hips the best it can and she is looking great!!!

Don’t ditch the longline!!! Us humans like everything in life to progress getting better each day but unfortunately life & especially dog training does not work like this, similar to dieting you are on track then all of a sudden you go on a weekend away, you eat and drink your weight in food & the diet goes out the window & the pounds back on 😅
Weight loss is hard and dog training is HARD, just when you feel like you are on track, adolescents hits & the serge of hormones, all them lovely chemicals running around your dog’s brain, turns your once cute fluffy pup that would do anything for you, into a deaf & hormonal teenager and you become let’s face it invisible amongst company of peers (other dogs)😅
Our answer - Dig out that Long line!!! Manage that teenager!! Go right back to your basics, dig out your notes from your puppy life skills training and yes you will need to start again 😅 but know this is normal, it is a phase- having to put your dog back on a long line in adolescents is normal & yes even us dog trainers do it too 😀
Do not let your dog practise ignoring their recall and running over to unknown dogs, stick them back on their long lines, up your reinforcements & try & have fun #recall #longline #management #teenager
