Training is CANCELLED tonight I’m afraid.

The roads around Broadclyst and whimple are up to 3 feet deep in some places. And there’s more rain forecast for tonight which will only make things worse.
So it’s better safe than sorry. Please apologise to the dogs for us!

So this weekend saw our open team compete in their last outdoor competition of the year. It also marked a year since we started this little club.
It’s been quite a journey so far. For one reason or another, the line up has changed almost every competition.
This time was no different as we introduced Lucy into the team for her club debut. She has plenty of racing experience though having previously raced with 4x4 flyball club. And she showed all that rock solid experience as she slotted in effortlessly with the other dogs despite having only had 2 training sessions with them.
Throughout the year these guys have been getting better and better, better turns, tighter crosses. This culminated in our fastest time yet of 22:56, over 4 seconds quicker than at the start of the year. And it gave us our best placing of 2nd in the division.
We can’t wait to come back next year and see where we end up then .

This weekend we took 2 teams to the outdoor championships in Tamworth. 1 open team and 1 foundation team. First up is our open team, the first team from Exeter to race at the champs.

This team have only raced together twice before. Hunter, Bertie, & Bryson have lots of racing experience, but both Bertie & Bryson were running with new handlers who had never raced a dog before this year. And Labrador mix Rin only just started training this year. They have all been on a big learning curve and have done fantastically well. At the start of our racing journey we recorded a best time of 26.65. But most runs have been around the 27-28 seconds.
But in the speed trials on Thursday, they recorded their fastest ever time of 25.54. That record didn’t stand for long though. In Saturdays racing, we set a new time of 25.33 in the very first race, and got close to beating it again in most of the others. But as we approached the afternoon races, with the weather warming up, and having a couple of older dogs who tire a bit quicker these days, we wouldn’t expect to beat it again, right? That would be too much to ask of them? And to go under 24 seconds should be impossible? Wouldn’t it?
Well these dogs clearly didn’t read the script and in the first race of the afternoon, they broke out twice with a 24.88 and then an astonishing 24.08!
Close crossovers, and paw perfect, they absolutely smashed it and ran their hearts out. They were four pawed super heroes. And you can see what it meant to the team.
So whilst we were eliminated, they achieved their best ever times and we are all so proud of them.

On behalf of everyone here at Isca Flyball, I’d like to thank everyone involved with the British Flyball Association, all the committee members, volunteers, judges, ring parties, measurers, regional reps, other teams. Without you all, giving up your time freely and openly, this organisation wouldn’t be what it is, and we wouldn’t be able to come and enjoy the worlds fastest, craziest game of fetch. We have loved being a part of it this year, and can’t wait to come back next year, faster and stronger.

Whilst the weather has been ok, our competing dogs have been training outside getting used to running on grass. This will give them a bit of experience of the surface we usually compete on.

This weekend saw us head to Wiltshire for the last ever competition to be hosted by the Basset Allsorts flyball club.
We were very light on human members but thankfully Jurassic Bark flyball team leant us a few of theirs.
So with some new handlers and a new box loader, the team really pulled together delivering our best performance in terms of No of clean runs, we won a leg in every race. And wehad some really close 5 leg deciders, and whilst we finished just on the wrong side of those this time, the dogs gave it everything.
Our star of the weekend without a doubt has to be Rin, making her open debut. Rin has been training for only a few months, but has already made her racing debut in foundation a couple of weeks ago, and now debating in open racing. And she hardly put a paw wrong all day.

We now train hard for the champs in August

Next up today was our foundation team, the Isca Dumnonii. With only 3 dogs, they were at a disadvantage from the start but despite some mixed fortunes, they can a respectable 4th in their division.
Mixed fortunes because little height dog Digger just couldn’t quite get his head in the game today. He managed 1 clean run which got the biggest cheer from the sidelines.
Making her racing debut was lab cross Rin, handled by Evie. Having only had 4 training sessions, she managed 11/12 clean runs, and was jumping on the box by the end of the day.
And finally, Red, having had a hard time settling into the racing environment last time out, this time smashed it by running 12/12 clean runs!
We might be a “small” club to some, but all the dogs have big hearts and give everything they can all day. We can’t wait to start bringing through some more dogs we have in training at the moment.

Well that was a busy day of flyball racing. First up is our open team. With new box loader Evie.
These guys took a bit of time to settle in the lane, but overall improved from last time out, with more times and more clean runs. Didn’t quite manage to go as quick as last time out, but it was a very much improved performance, coming not last in their division!
In the final race of the day when they were all getting very tired they managed to push the fastest team in the division to 5 leg decider, which they ultimately lost, but they gave it there all.

For those coming from Exeter, the road is due to be closed from Westclyst from 7pm. Please allow a bit of extra time. Alternative route through cranbrook

Well what a weekend that was!
Our brand new little club attended their first competition at the weekend.
First up was our open team consisting of Hunter, Bertie, Bryson, and debutante Tj, and box loader Dionne.
These guys had a shaky start whilst they found their paws in the lane, but they didn’t let their heads drop and kept on going. Unfortunately in the afternoon they had to withdraw from competition due to Bryson struggling with his leg (he’s fine know, just a bit of arthritis made him go a bit stiff after a rest).
But that meant we could give a bit of extra support to Tj and by the end of the day was doing what we see him do in training all the time. Bertie was a little star in his first full competition since 2019, running faultless throughout the day. Hunter also managed to get the perfect rolling start light of 0.00 seconds.
Despite everything, they came away with a time of 26.65 seconds.

Next up was 5 of our foundation dogs, 4 of whom were making there first steps into a competition ring.
Bluebell has competed once before, and she was brilliant, giving clean runs in all but one leg. Red, digger, blue and Louie were all making their debut’s in racing. The first couple of races they were finding their paws and settling into the energetic environment. But come the end they we’re giving mostly clean runs consistently. They have all gained some invaluable in ring experience which will hopefully but them in good standing for the next competition 🤞.

Overall, as club, we had a great experience. Only our team captain, Chris and box loader Dionne had ever been in a competition ring before. But the team were fantastic for their first ever taste of competition. Everyone stuck together and helped each other out. They were all very enthusiastic and keen to get stuck in wherever they could. They had to learn how to do ring party. In fact Megan box judging, having never done it before, correctly spotted a box fault that absolutely everyone else missed!
Overall we are so proud of you all and are delighted to have been the first teams to represent the City of Exeter. Something that some people said was never going to be possible! Onwards and upwards from here 👏👏👏

Next to introduce you to, is the very handsome Reddy Redford, aka Red the rocket.
Red is a kelpie x collie although he looks more kelpie than collie.
Red will be hoping to make his debut in the competition lanes this year. And he has a lot of expectations on him. His adopted brother is the one and only Bryson, and he is also the son of our start dog Hunter. With that kind of racing pedigree, we think he could be one of the dogs to watch.

Next up to introduce to you all is the one and only Bluebell. Apart from being impossibly cute, she also has plenty of the bully breed ”attitude” to her. Sometimes she wants to run, sometimes she doesn’t. And we never know which it’s going to be until her handler lets her go 🤣!
Shes definitely a proper character and we just love her.
Her owner also runs Tails & Trails Dog Walking in Exeter, so if you need a dog walker in Exeter, we can definitely recommend them.

Next up is another one of our experienced competition dogs, and another border collie (it’s a popular breed 🤣). This is Hunter. Hunter has been competing for a couple of years now and has gained over 500 flyball points.
Fun fact
He is also the father of one of our foundation dogs that we will introduce you to later…
