Miss Maia had another reiki this afternoon after her walk. This wee girl is coming on leaps and bounds with a combination of reiki and some basic training.
She's often able to either come to me when we are near another dog or if it's appropriate, to interact calmly.
I had a conversation with someone today about dogs interacting and he said that it's a shame many dogs aren't 'allowed' to interact with any other dogs. I quietly explained that interaction isn't about playing with every dog they meet but doing so in a controlled and suitable environment with dogs they gradually get to know and are safe around. Not all dogs are happy to interact with other dogs they don't know for many reasons. I've worked as a mainly solo dog walker for over 5 years and many of the dogs I've walked have been dog reactive. With the right care and attention to their needs, watching their behaviour and body language, I've been able to help them become less reactive to other dogs but it really takes time and patience. We don't get on with every human we meet so we really shouldn't expect this of our dogs.
Reiki helps calm the dogs, they are then less nervous and less likely to react. Because I practice reiki regularly I am calm and this reflects in the dogs behaviour, a calm handler makes such a huge difference to a nervous dog.
