A solid recall is *vital* if you want to exercise your dog off-lead, for their safety and others. As a dog walker, walking other people's dogs, I'm even more acutely aware of the risks.

Even if you typically keep your dog on a lead, recall practice can save the day if you ever fall, drop your lead, have a lead, harness or collar break or your dog gets out of an open gate or damaged fence.

Here are a few simple tips to remember, so you can practice your recall effectively on any walk!

How does your dog cope in public places like cafés & pubs? ☕️🍺

Here are my top tips for helping your pup learn to chill out and relax with you this summer. ☀️

Ultimately, it all boils down to ensuring your dog is as comfortable as possible and building your expectations gradually.

Got any trips planned? I'd love to hear about where you're off to & what you're doing to keep your dog comfy! 👇

A Passion for Welfare

Makin Paw Prints is run with canine behaviour, psychology and general welfare at the forefront of every decision. As a member of the IMDT (Institute of Modern Dog Trainers) and the Pet Professional Network, I am committed to force- and fear-free handling to ensure your dogs’ emotional and physical well being while in my care. Every year, I complete hours’ of CPD so that I know I am using the most up to date, ethical and scientifically valid practices.

Many popular forms of exercising dogs these days rely on exhausting our dogs - they spend hours of their day in a physically and/or mentally taxing environment and come home at the end of the day and crash. Many people don’t realise that this is the case, as it can appear that your dog comes home suitably tired after a fun day out - but it is best to think of this as the difference between a nice day out with close friends or family vs going out clubbing, surrounded by strangers, for hours every day. You will probably fall asleep quickly at the end of the day either way, but one of these is a productive way to meet your physical, mental and social needs and one is much more intense and most of us would find that it quickly became stressful and exhausting if we had to do it day after day.

My dog walks are designed to be as beneficial to your dogs’ species-specific needs as possible - group walks are kept small, typically around three or four dogs, and I select dogs with complimentary personalities to walk together. This means all the dogs can feel happy, confident and relaxed throughout their walks, and can form solid relationships with a stable group of dogs. My walks take place in rural locations, where I have space to safely exercise dogs on long lines or off lead (where appropriate) so that they can explore and sniff to their hearts’ content. My walks provide a relaxing, calm environment where dogs can socialise and play in a healthy and productive way, while enjoying the fresh air, sights, sounds and scents our beautiful county’s countryside has to offer.
