What a week we’ve had! Enjoying this Autumnal September weather 🍁 🍃

Feeling inspired to share more of Mira and Smudge’s story this week. Mira has been with us since January after having moved from Romania street dog rescue charity to her forever home here. It’s been so rewarding to see her come on leaps and bounds and this show in her behaviour. When we first took her on she was highly reactive to cars, lorries, runners and cyclists - none of which are a problem now.

Her sister Smudge has also come from Romania and has suffered a lot of trauma from the journey overseas. After daily visits she is getting more confident day by day. At first she refused to be anyway near us but her curiosity is growing each day and moments like this feel golden.

Love being part of animals’ journey and seeing the progress that can be made with patience, kindness and healthy boundaries 🐾 ❤️ 🐾

Just stocking up on our 100% compostable poo bags!

Did you know that many poo bags sold as BIODEGRADABLE are just as harmful/more harmful for the earth? Often these bags contain only a small percentage of biodegradable plastic, which is in fact regular plastic containing an enzyme which breaks the plastic down quicker into smaller microplastic molecules. These are detrimental to our own and oceans’ health and a huge problem.

We will continue to make informed, ethical choices as long as we can afford to as a small business.

Yes it’s more expensive, but it feels a small price to pay compared to the environmental c crisis we are facing!

Search for compostable, starch based alternative to “biodegradable” bags!

Welcoming beautiful Daisy - the newest addition to our team!
We have taken Daisy in after her family couldn’t keep her and we love her to bits already!

First day of joining the Walkies With Isi team on pack walks has been going well with all getting on 🙂

🐾 🎉 Happy Birthday to Bert, 6 today 🥳 🐾

So lovely to see him settle into his new life in the countryside - hard to believe this was a dog who didn’t like swimming or mud before moving to Frome and starting walks with us!

Bert’s had a whale of a time splashing and snorting and generally being a chirpy chappy

Having some indoor playtime 🙂

Playing games with treats such as rolling on the floor, throwing in the air and “chase me” is a simple way to improve proximity. You can experiment with what your dog finds most exciting and return to a fixed point e.g. a mat on the floor and offer a treat. This rewarding reinforces the behaviour in your dog that you want (them staying close to you!) and will hardwire your dogs brain to repeat this behaviour when you are out and about. Meanwhile everyone has loads of fun 🥳

We offer lots of stimulating games like this during a pet visit, as well as feeding, toilet breaks and of course lots of cuddles and fuss!

An easy tip to give your dog more CALM.

Here is Alfie enjoying a scatter feed - simply scatter your dog’s regular daily food allowance and let them sniff and search for it!

A dog’s sense of smell is their strongest before sight and hearing. Exercising their noses and foraging behaviour releases serotonin and dopamine. Remember the bowl is a human invention, simple switches like this can help anxious, over-excited, reactive or any dogs empty their cup. Let us know if you try it out!

We have a dog nearly charity here in Frome! Dogs for health are looking for volunteers humans and dogs to run walk and talk sessions to support people’s mental health, and keen for you to get in touch if you could benefit from their service!

I’m so excited about this, dog therapy is still relatively new in the UK compared to places like the US. One of the reasons I was drawn to working with dogs is because they are such special animals, with so much unconditional love to give us and so much to teach us.

DFH provides a range of therapy dogs to help with social isolation and mental health. We provide walk and talk groups. Individual sessions and group sessions. Specialist therapy dogs to help in social care settings

Another one to welcome to the pack this week - gorgeous Mira!

Mira came all the way from being a street dog in Romania to her new family during the spring lockdown of 2020. We’re so excited to be part of her journey settling into her new life.

Many dogs haven’t had enough socialisation in the last year. In her first week with us Mira is already showing signs of benefitting from socialisation with more adults and dogs, during group walks in a variety of environments. Don’t wait until lockdown is over, please get in contact if you think your dog could benefit.
