Home after another great farrier CPD clinic at Alnorrhumbria veterinary group, a good mix of some interesting methods of shoeing not commonly used but provides lots to think about, and also how to maintain good basics to help keep the horses performing at their best day to day.

Had a great couple of days up at World Horse Welfare, Belwade farm for the Worshipful Company of Farriers Foot balance course.
With presentations on the Friday and hands on Shoeing and discussion with some of the best clinicians in the country and fellow working farriers,
it certainly sparked some interesting conversations and exchange of ideas on how best to keep our horses comfortable and working.

First time using these “squish pads” for an old arthritic pony that’s completely locked up on the lateral side of his pastern, these allowed him to stand in a more comfortable position and he seemed to like them. I’m game for giving anything a try but both me and the owner were surprisingly impressed. Will definitely be trying them on a couple of others to see how they do.
(These pics are obviously after removal to note the wear)

Could everyone that has an outstanding invoice please have it paid by the end of the day. I have now over £1000 due in from late payments and I can’t continue like this.
Repeat late payments will result in clients being cut from my books, I’m too busy to be chasing people up all of the time.

Thanks, Andrew

🐴 Price Increase 🐴

As of 1st July there is going to be a slight price increase, I had to go VAT registered at the start of the year meaning I’m paying an extra 20% of each shoeing to the government now. I’ve done my best to absorb the majority of this cost to save a massive price hike for everyone however it’s no longer sustainable for the business.

I want to provide the best service I can and the current costs are making that extremely difficult.

So as of July 1st prices are

Full set - £98
Half set - £68

Thank you all for your continued support I really do have a fantastic list of clients 😊

Many thanks,
Andrew

Fantastic day down at Alnorthumbria Equine Vets for the latest farrier CPD clinic. Lots to take home and think about, and put into practice. Lectures and demos covering
- shoeing the hind limb (engine room) covering sports and leisure horses, aswell as the effect of artificial surfaces on performance and soundness
- Foot balance for the fore limb, and how artificial surfaces effect the foots interaction with them
- shoeing for Proximal Suspensory Desmitis……and how artificial surfaces effect or even cause this condition
…….there appears to be a pattern forming involving surfaces! 🤔🐎

Great speakers, very well organised and a fantastic venue

Dealing with a bad quarter crack, horse is quite badly toed in, all the pressure was on the outside heel/quarter and it just gave up and blew out the side, straight bar on to try and stabilise the hoof and crack tidied up to ease any “pinching” going on.
Got some way to go though

Tips from a farrier 😂🐴

On average it takes 3600 seconds to shoe someone’s well behaved precious fluffy.

The said fluffy will then go an average of 6 weeks until the next shoeing. That leaves 87,087,600 seconds to do what ever you want to your precious 4 legged fluffy. The following list are somethings that really don’t need to be done for the 3600 seconds a farrier is working on that horse.

- lotions and potions- please don’t cover every square inch of the precious pony in any creams or sprays, hoof treatments are a big no no. Being an adult man covered in a white gloopy substance or smelling like I’ve got a bad case of nappy rash isn’t ideal.

-feeding- TREATS! Or buckets of feed are a huge bug bare for most farriers. Having to squabble with a food obsessed fluffy is hard work and we don’t wish to look like a scarecrow. Feeding for those 3600 seconds isn’t going to give you the instant condition you’ll need for the gymkhana the next day.

-Bathing,clipping,preening- having to deal with a dripping wet soapy pony isn’t ideal, I know a day of shoeing doesn’t leave us smelling that fresh, but we are Capable of cleaning ourselves. I find clipping just before or whilst shoeing insulting and uncomfortably itchy.

-family and friends- horses are a herd animal, turning out all your precious fluffys friends whilst those 3600seconds of a shoeing appointment, is fairly inconsiderate. Trying to convince a neurotic fluffy that his friends are having a rubbish time and there aren’t any lions waiting to eat him, is a tricky thing.

-advice- your farrier, trimmer or vet has taken decades to acquire some small snippets of half decent knowledge. If we willingly dish some out, it’s usually because we feel it’s helpful to keep you and your beloved fluffy alive and well, until we can see you for our next round of 3600 seconds, A few pieces of gold are as follows…

“Don’t buy an ex race horse, in the rare occasion it doesn’t try killing you on a regular basis, it will attempt to kill itself on an even more regular basis “

“Please stop feeding your fluffy, the shear fact you can’t get a saddle to fit isn’t anyones fault and it’s going to die”

“Please spend some time handling your savage fluffy” , I’m running out of spare body parts and my business card doesn’t state “I do this for fun “

These are just a few things that a farrier wishes the owner would avoid for those 3600 seconds every six weeks.

All credit for this must go to Luke Cain awcf 😂

Bit of problem solving today (please ignore the crap welds!😂)
Lame pony with suspected check ligament injury, severely toed in and collapsed outside heel.
After discussions with the vet we decided on a graduated bar shoe to relive stress on check lig. And stabilise the compromised lateral heel
However trying to fit this symmetrical shoe to a very unsymmetrical foot was proving very tricky.
The red line shows roughly where the lateral heel had folded under to, so I welded this small addition to cover the heel while leaving the bar ideally where the foot should be. It was then further supported by the addition of DIM to spread the load as evenly as possible
Pony showed significant improvement after shoeing
