Here are some photos of streams that are near Badger setts - they rely on these for their water source. As you can see one is completely dried up the other is drying up 😢 we've gone out tonight and left containers of water out for them. We were told this was being done by a few local residents but it doesn't look like it is so good job we checked...
Please leave water near any setts you know of and some fruits if you can. As you can see they are really struggling.

Badger culling has not produced a reduction in the prevalence of bovine TB in cattle
The Cull is financially unviable, ineffective & inhumane.

DEVON BADGER CULL - UPDATE❗️

📢 A few days ago, this year's supplementary badger cull kill targets were released, specifying the minimum and maximum numbers of badgers the cull companies should be aiming to kill in each of the cull zones. This confirms that between 1810 and 9692 badgers will lose their lives as a result of the supplementary cull this year, in Devon alone!

These figures are staggering and we urge you to take action. Please see our previous post for information on what you can do locally.

The map below shows our interpretation of what this means for Devon. The first number in each case represents the zone/area number, followed by the minimum and maximum kill target for that zone. Zones highlighted in RED have begun killing and will continue until the end of January 2024. The zone highlighted in ORANGE will be in its second year of intensive culling this year, i.e. only culling in the autumn months.

Contrary to what we posted a week ago, we now believe the zones marked in GREEN have ceased culling altogether. Those zones have completed 4 years of intensive culling, followed by 2 years of supplementary culling. They do not appear in this year's supplementary culling documentation, so we believe they have not applied for a licence (or were not granted a licence) to carry on this year. This means any badger killing of any sort in these zones is illegal. We will continue monitoring setts in these zones and encourage you to do the same. We know a huge amount of illegal persecution has taken place under the cover of the cull, and we don't expect this will stop. ***If you find badger traps anywhere in the green-marked areas, please contact us immediately.

* Please note that the zone boundaries are based on local intelligence-gathering and are not official boundaries. DEFRA have never released the official zone boundaries, so it's impossible to be certain about these.

A bit more on the targets:

The min/max kill targets are supposed to be based on some estimate of the actual badger population size, so as to avoid causing local extinction. However, in most cases the min and max figures are set so far apart, it's clear they're based on nothing but guesswork, with the max set so high it allows for complete extermination and the min set so low it allows them to claim 'success'.

However, in the last round of supplementary culling, a number of zones didn't meet their minimum targets. It's obviously good that fewer badgers were killed in those zones, but it also suggests that badger populations in those zones are now at extremely low levels. Despite this, many of those zones have been permitted to carry on culling this year, because the government's Chief Vet "assures us" that badgers aren't going locally extinct and that the population in those zones might have just been lower than expected to start with... This is an alarmingly nonsensical argument and should worry everyone. It proves that the government have no idea how many badgers there are and - more worryingly - nor do they care. The whole point of setting a minimum was to keep tabs on population sizes to prevent them falling below a viable level!

Please get active locally. Your badgers need you now more than ever! There's more info here on what you can do: https://www.facebook.com/devoncountyhuntsaboteurs/videos/6190645771028742

⚠️ June 1st marks the start of the Supplementary badger cull in England

Apparently it's licensed because the first round of intensive killing wasn’t ‘enough’.

More sett checking this morning. It's getting a bit harder to check due to how overgrown the areas are getting but we managed! We are concerned with how dry the ground is so please think about supporting wildlife by leaving water out or near any setts you are aware of.

Another evening checking on a few local Badger setts, some of them looked more active then we've seen in a long time, despite a traffic cone being wedged in one of the holes at one of the locations! Unfortunately one of setts we checked on we think has been destroyed 😡 Hopefully they were able to move on somewhere safer.
Badgers are persecuted all year round not just in the cull period so if you would like to help us keep an eye on local setts please give us a private message.

We like to keep an eye on some setts by using trail cameras. Often we see Foxes as well as Badgers and we were lucky enough to capture some footage of Fox cubs. Look how cute they are ♥ Looks like Mum was keeping a close eye on them.
