I see lots of posts and warnings regarding dogs in hot weather but I haven't seen any regarding humidity. It's not just ambient temperatures but also humidity that can affect dogs, I appreciate some of you may be aware of this, but equally some may not, and if it helps save even just one dogs life then it's worth mentioning.
Dogs pant to evaporate moisture from their lungs, which takes heat away from their body, when humidity is too high the moisture can't escape, causing them to overheat. The ideal humidity is between 30-60%.
I hope you all manage to stay cool over the next few days. If you can't go for a walk, honestly don't worry, don't feel guilty. There are plenty of things you can do at home to keep your dog happy and cool.
• Playing in the pool or with a sprinkler, just remember to run the hose until it runs cool as water in the hose pipe will be very hot. If your dog isn't a fan of a pool, keep it shallow and see if they will step in to find treats or their favourite toy. Remember to keep an eye on the amount of water they ingest due to water intoxication.
• Freeze some of their favourite treats ie carrots, slices of apple, you can even make some ice cubes out of bone broth, live yoghurt, banana to name a few. You could also try stuffing a Kong and popping it in the freezer. (BUT ICE MUST NOT BE GIVEN IF YOUR DOG IS DISPLAYING SIGNS OF HEATSTROKE)
• Find the treat in the grass in a nice shaded spot, or grate some carrot or something else they like, and scatter it on the grass, this will give them some great mental stimulation and tire them out too.
• Cool mats are great too, if you haven't got one you can always try wetting a towel and popping it on the floor for them to lie on, as dogs absorb and release heat through their paws too, this will help keep them cool 🐾🐾

Photo of Annie & Gracie's first and last walk with us 😢 to say it has been an emotional morning would be an understatement! I will never forget the first day I met these beautiful girls, their owner said Annie may not go with me as she protests to walk with anyone but family, and in 4 years I am privileged to say Annie has never missed a day with us 🥰 I wish you all the very best on your new venture, we won't say goodbye, we will say auf wiedersehen 🐾 💕 it really has been an absolute honour to walk you girls and I will miss you so so much!! 🥰😢

Fun in the snow ❄️ 🐾

Doing some 'sit & stay' training with my 3 this morning on the way back to the van after our walk, as we got half way Mollie decided she wasn't going any further without Shadow, Storm & Diesel and decided she was going to trot back and sit with them until I called them. Mollie was timid around other dogs when she started coming to me last year so moments like this really do mean so much to me 😁🥰🐶
