Today's Challenge
So...think you know your dog breeds?

Be honest, did you guess them right?

If you did, well done, this is not your typical easy breed identification quiz! ๐Ÿพ

Each dog breed has its own physical and non physical characteristics and individual traits within that, but it can be extremely useful to know your dog(s) breed(s) for health management, preventative training as well as curing (finding the cause and successfully addressing the issue) any unwanted behaviours.

It's that time of year again! Find the poo! And in all seriousness it's a great time to practise maintaining proper observation on our dog(s) while we are out with them, which is important for many reasons beyond this particular example! ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿถ ๐Ÿ‚

5 examples:

- Understanding what frame of mind your dog is currently in (this can change very quickly!)
- Learning what causes your dog to change mood or frame of mind (what they like and dislike and in what circumstances)
- Watching the body and brain i.e. behaviour (both should be considered during stimulation, training and exercise)
- Observing changes to your dogs environment so that you can step in to guide your dog where needed to prevent unwanted situations or behaviours.
- Don't lose track of where they poo!

Happy Autumn!

Everybody meet Marvin! I've been working with this adorable little guy and his owner to put in a great foundation, building important skills early on, and learning how to prevent and manage particular puppy/adolescent behaviours.

Now at four months old, Marvin is growing and listening so well. It's been fantastic to see his progression and I just love working with such a dedicated pair, a huge well done to Marvin and his owner. Keep the momentum going, and I'll see you both next time!

How can you begin to tell the difference between lead/barrier reactivity and real aggression?

Lead/barrier reactivity - you can see pure frustration in the dogs face and body, but with no intent to bite. Loud barking, often with wide open air snaps, pulling and or bounding up or around on the lead. Can include whining, more high pitched sounds, excitement and general frustration.

Lead aggression - they typically hold the body low to the gound and very tense. Focus and anger in the face and eyes. Pulling forwards towards the intended target, more force in snaps, less whining noises.

It's been a while! Busy and hectic time of year for us - here's an update - Pictures of Training Session with Athena - we were working on recall with distractions (including other dogs, children playing football and other public park activities) She's an absolute star and made it look so easy ๐ŸŒŸ.

Her owners should be so proud of her progress, the proof is in the pudding, and they have worked together so well to achieve their goals. Well enough to welcome a new addition to the family, meet little Atlas! I'm pleased to see they are getting on so well and Atlas is adjusting to his new home beautifully!

Common things we get told as trainers;

* ''My dog has never done this before or He/she would never''
- Although often very amusing, if we are already having this conversation, it's usually untrue

* ''My dog is 100% reliable unless distracted by XYZ''
- This means your dog is not 100% reliable, that is ok, but the first step is to acknowledge this to be able to move forward

* ''There was no warning - he/she just reacted''
- Untrue, you just missed it, or were not present for it, which is also ok and again, acknowledgement is the first step to real change

The common factors between the above statements are that many clients are not always observing their dogs during these times and cannot always acknowledge what their dog is and is not capable of.

If this sounds familiar and you are looking for help with your dog(s), please get in touch via our online contact form, email or via WhatsApp to find out how we can help.

What is that one breed (or more) that you would LOVE to have as your own but simply cannot?

Put your answer in the comments and let me know. It's OK to dream! ๐Ÿ’ญ๐Ÿพ

For me it's got to be between the Black Russian Terrier, and the Leonburger. ๐Ÿถ
Both are amazing dogs in my eyes but I do not currently have the room for these magnificent breeds! The hair would also be alot for my hoover but I think it would be worth it! ๐Ÿ˜†

There is no shame in having an unsocialised dog or puppy.

There is also no shame in your dog having a slightly anxious and possibly unsocialised owner.

It would be a shame to not work on it.

โ˜€๏ธ Enjoy the summer while it lasts! โ˜€๏ธ
It's very warm again this week so please be aware, be extra careful depending on your dogs needs, no walking unless for toileting (avoid the midday-afternoon time) and give your dogs plenty of engaging enrichment and mental stimulation!

- Paddling pool
- Brain games (short periods)
- Fridge/freezer treats i.e. carrots/ prepped frozen kong
- Cooling mat
- Ice cubes
- Cool, damp towels to lie on
- Plenty of shaded places to lie down
- Fresh cool water
- Well ventilated areas to relax

๐Ÿ”ฅDo not try to cool down an overheating dog too fast. Do not leave your dogs in a vehicle.

I thought I would share some beautiful memories of some of my previous dogs, Misty the Staffy, Lottie the JRT X, and Magnum the GSD ๐Ÿพ

They might be no longer with me, I still talk about them today during my training, and they will forever be in my mind and heart ๐Ÿ’• They never truly leave you.

Do we ever really stop training? Or, when our dogs are ready (and can still be successful at what we ask of them), do we just take a step back and mostly observe, offering guidance only where needed? How do we know when to do this? How do we know when our dogs have progressed enough?

I like to challenge my clients and their dogs to see how they get on when I 'move the goalposts'!

I work closely to train, guide and support my clients and their dogs in order to reach their individual goals.

'Is this a good enough sit for you?' ๐Ÿ˜„

Model: Bonnie ๐Ÿพ

Can your dog really sit? What if the parameters change? What if you praise for the sit, will they still be sitting, or is praise a release cue for your dog? What if you change the environment or stimulation within that environment?

I have created a challenge tick list for my clients who wish to find out!

Can your dog really Sit? ๐Ÿค”
