Puppy training tips.
Tip 5.
Don't be too strict!
Training takes time. So, it’s important to be patient with your puppy and not punish them when things don’t go to plan. If your puppy chews the furniture, climbs where they shouldn’t, or urinates in the house, there is no use in reprimanding them later, as they are unlikely to make the connection. The best way to make it clear that something is forbidden is to say a very clear “No!” while the undesired activity is taking place.
Puppy training tips.
Tip 4.
Be consistent!
To help your puppy understand, it’s vital to be consistent. You shouldn’t allow something one day that you forbid another, for example. When it comes to training, the best approach is to always use the same words for the same commands, and encourage family members to use the same language.
These 2 lovely Lhasa Apsos were best of friends up until about 2 weeks ago when for unknown reasons they turned on each other.
During our first session we couldn’t get them both in the same room together without them reacting.
On my second visit today after some great work from the owners they are walking and eating from their owners hand great.
Still more work to do with them but the progress is amazing!
Puppy training tips!
Tip 3!
Start early
In the early months of life your puppy’s brain is constantly growing and developing. That’s why starting training early, when they are most receptive to new experiences, is so important.
Puppy training tips.
Tip 2.
Keep it brief!
Training sessions don’t have to be complicated or last for hours. After a while, your puppy’s attention may start to wander. So, go for short, frequent training sessions . You may have to repeat the same session a few times.
Puppy training tips!
Puppies can learn very quickly and enjoy a well-designed training session. Over the next coming days I will share some tips to help keep your sessions fun and make sure you and your puppy get the most out of every exercise.
Tip 1.
Letting your puppy know that they have done something right is an important part of the training process. Try using a low-calorie snack, a healthy treat, or use kibble from their daily food portion. Other non-food related rewards can be praise, attention or their favourite toy. All of these will act as an incentive to repeat good behaviour.
Is it too late to start training my dog?
No! It's never too late to train a dog. Whether it’s a puppy or an older dog. An older dog may already know some commands and have a much longer attention span than puppies. You may have to relearn certain behaviours with an older dog or take into account any physical health issues but you can train an older dog.

Potty training your new puppy? Remember MSP!
Take your puppy outside;
After every MEAL
After SLEEPING (also before they go to sleep at night)
after PLAYTIME.
and remember; PRAISE, PRAISE, PRAISE when they get it right.
If they have an accident that you did not see, clean up and move on. They won’t understand after the incident they’ve done wrong.
If you catch them in the act inside, firmly tell them no, and take them outside to finish.
Happy New Year from Unleashed 🐶
With Christmas fast approaching there may be some of you thinking about getting a new puppy as a gift.
This can be an exciting step for families, the idea of introducing a new furry family member to the household. However, It takes time to learn about dog ownership and make an informed decision as to whether or not a new dog is a good idea for the family and the household.
Take the time to learn the things you will need to know, do your research, and educate your children on how to deal with a new canine addition. Taking a protracted amount of time to do this is absolutely fine, and even recommended- plus, it gives you the chance to determine if you and your family is committed to the idea of owning and helping to take care of a new pet.
A dog requires proper training and socialising in order to prevent behavioural problems as they grow.
With that being said some people don’t know where to start. So if you think that a dog is for you but you’d like some 1-2-1 help, support and guidance with training your new addition then please DM today. I offer one off sessions to help you begin your training journey or packages of a number of sessions if you do not feel confident with the training yourselves or maybe struggling to have that time put aside to start. Whilst I can help over come this, in order to succeed it is important that you and your family are involved in the whole training process to ensure success.
BEFORE YOU GET A PUPPY Or ADOPT A DOG - READ THIS! ... and then think long and hard about how you will adjust your life to include your new addition ...
“I am a Dobermann, cataloged one of the most intelligent and most feared dogs, I have served the US Navy and I will not narrate my dark past on the German side. They called me the devil's dog, today they ask me to behave like a Poodle, they have gone so far as to wear clothes ...
I am a Malinois:
Gifted among dogs, I shine in all disciplines and I am always ready to work. Today they ask me to relax on the couch all day.
I am an Akita Inu:
My ancestors have been selected to fight with other dogs. Today they ask me to be tolerant of my peers, and they blame me for my reactivity when one of them approaches me.
I am a Beagle:
When I followed my prey, I gave a voice so that the hunters could follow me. I was leading the dance.
Today they put an electric collar on me to silence me, and they want me to return to the call in a snap of fingers.
I am a Yorkshire Terrier:
I was a rat catcher, fearsome in the English mines. Today they think that I can't use my legs and they always hold me in their arms.
I am a Labrador Retriever:
My vision of happiness is a dip in a pond to bring my master the duck he just shot. Today we forget that I am a sports dog, I am fat and I have to babysit the children.
I am a Jack Russell Terrier:
I am capable of facing a fox larger than me in its own den. Today they blame me for my damn character and want to turn me into a parlor dog.
I am a Siberian husky:
I got to know the great spaces of northern Russia, where I could pull sledges at impressive speed. Today I only have the walls of the garden on my horizon, and my only occupation is the holes I dig in the ground.
I am a Border Collie:
I am cut out to work eight hours a day, and I am an incomparable artist of herd labor. Today they blame me because in the absence of sheep, I try to control bicycles, cars, children from home, and everything that is in motion.
I am...
I'm a 19th century dog
I am handsome, I am alert, I am obedient, I can put up with being in a purse ... but I am also an individual who needs to express his instincts, and I am not suitable for the sedentary life that you want me to carry.
Spending eight hours a day alone on the patio, seeing you a little at night when you come back, and being entitled to any activity just a short walk to the bathroom will make me deeply unhappy.
I'll express it by barking all day, turning your garden into a minefield, relieving myself on the inside, being unmanageable the few times I'll find myself on the outside, and sometimes spending my days on my cushion, then you'll think I'm happy to To be able to enjoy all this comfort while you go to work: in reality I will be in full depression, because it is not the preference of the human, but also that of the dog of the XXI century.
If you like me, if you dream of me forever, if my beautiful blue eyes or my athlete look make you want to possess me, but you can't give me a real life of a full dog, a life that is really worth living, and if not you can offer me the job my genes claim ... then quit me.
If you like my rhythm but are not ready to accept my character traits from rigorous genetic selection, and you think you can change them with your only good will ... then quit me.
I'm a 19th century dog, yes. But, deep there, the one who fought, the one who hunted, the one who pulled sleds, the one who led a herd still sleeps. And sooner or later, you will wake up. For better or worse.”

High value treats are great to use and can make a big difference in how successful your training sessions are.
The right dog training treat can help a dog focus more easily around distractions. And in some cases, a treat might be so distracting in and of itself that a dog can't focus on the task at hand!
Many of my dog training clients are always asking me what kind of treat they should use with their dogs. With so many options available, it can be hard to know what dog treats you should buy.
There is a simple answer to this question. Use whatever training treat your dog enjoys!

The importance of consistency… something I consistently go on about. Get it? 🤣 Consistent responses are essential to dog training on every level. When you are inconsistent in training, you confuse your dog. You may also find yourself accidentally reinforcing undesired behaviors. As you all know Bruno has been out of action for 12 weeks. This has included his daily walks. Now he has healed, I’ve noticed when walking him he has gone backwards slightly in his ability to respond to some of my cues when walking. This is expected because he hasn’t been walked, I haven’t been consistent in my walking cues! But as you can see it hasn’t taken him long to remember them and respond appropriately. He still can get a little distracted but who wouldn’t if you’ve been on strict bedrest for 12 weeks but by continuing to be consistent in the walking cues he’ll soon overcome this! If you need help with walking your dog on a leash or any other behaviour difficulties then please get in touch today!
Tired of your dog pulling when on a leash? Want your dog to be able to walk calmly by your side? Get in touch today to arrange a 1-2-1 session on how we can achieve this! 🐶
And he’s back! Bruno loves to be challenged and now he is allowed more freedom (following the go ahead from the vet) it’s time to start challenging him more. One rule we have for Bruno is to lie on his bed when we feel he may be a bit boisterous and want him to calm down. It’s important that your dog has their own space in your home where they feel comfortable and safe and you can send them if they need a time out 🐶
When learning a new trick it needs to be broken down into steps. I really progressed with Bruno and getting him used to standing on a skateboard. However, since his operations he hasn’t had the opportunity to develop this trick further. He’s allowed 5 minute walks a few times a day at present but once he is ready we will be back at it and I can get more videos to show how far he has progressed. It is important that with any dog the basics are established before going on to teach anything more complicated. These are the sit, wait, down and here/come commands. These basic commands can be learnt at any age, but starting early on makes it easier. And consistency is key! If you would like support with these basic commands then do no hesitate to contact me today to arrange a 1-2-1 hour session. Dan 🐶
You haven’t seen Bruno in a while! He’s recovering from a second operation on his other leg now so is still resting while he heals. I can’t wait until he can get back out for walks again and we can continue with his training. He’s mastered the basics, which we keep on top of during his recovery, but soon he’ll be back to learning all sorts of tricks. Any suggestions on what we can teach him? Leave a suggestion in the comments ⬇️
Did you know that it is just as important to work your dogs mind as well as his physical exercise. Bruno has recently had an operation on his leg so is not allowed any physical exercise at present. Bruno is a highly energetic dog so being unable to run or even walk around is difficult for him. So instead I taught him to give kisses as a little game, keeping his mind stimulated.
Meet the lovely Margo. I met with Margo to work on recall in her local park. After just one session, she is already responding better to recall from her owner. Margo’s owner shared “it was quiet down the park this morn, nobody around so I took her up in the top section (so that she couldn’t escape haha!) And just practiced what we did yesterday Although she’s not completely cured - today’s walk was so much different to the rest I can feel that if I continue this she will crack it. It’s unbelievable how much better I feel about it already Thank you!”
