It's been a busy time here at Hattie's Hedgehog Rescue - some new admissions that have needed treatments taking time to deliver.

Some Thank You's. A1waste A1 clearance and recycling LTD and their customers who raised and donated £150 to the hog account. It has been already earmarked for a 2nd Maternity unit and will be the A1 Maternity Unit. Thank you Ian and your team and customers.

Next thank you to Tracie Groom who dropped off 24 tins of hoggie wet food.

Thank you to Jenny, Dot and Clare for the newspapers.

Another big welcome to Craig and Caroline who have become our newest foster carers. McGonagol has settled in beautifully.

I am absolutely delighted to welcome Jane & Robin and Belinda to the Hattie's Hedgehog Rescue family as our first foster parents. Tesco Extra, Ace and Frankie are soo lucky.

Our other guests are doing well with the exception of Baldrick who has gone on the equivalent of Hedgehog Slimming World. Slow steady weight loss - I think he spoke to McGonagol who told him that if he reached release target weight he was out. Baldrick has researched Norfolk and since it doesn't have winter sun has put plan b into action!

Rudolph - a weather window watcher is up 60g this week and is now 868g.
Baldrick - down 26g now 620g.
McGonagol - better for being brought out of hibernation and us up 44g and is now 631g.
Scratchy - still has nasal congestion but chest clear. Up 118g and now having his biscuit and wet food reduced as he us 1166g. He can still curl /ball but if he puts much more on he is at risk of being overweight.
Spot - soon to be a weather watcher up 95g and is now 748g
Finally McSnotty - his infected, macerated nose has healed well. Up 97g and is now 760g. He too is soon to become a weather watcher.

A big thank you this week to East Coast Pet Rescue who appealed for newspapers and towels for us. We have a super stock of towels now so no more at the moment please. Newspapers are gratefully needed - each hog in rescue needs 1.5 newspapers a day.

Message me for drop off point - waterproof box in front garden xx

The European hedgehog has unfortunately been listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as a 'near threatened' species as their numbers have declined by over 30% in the last decade.

There are a variety of factors contributing to hedgehogs' decline, including:
➡ The destruction of their habitats
➡ Increased road traffic
➡ Use of pesticides which makes it harder for them to find food
➡ Garden hazards like netting and ponds cause further casualties as hedgehogs can become easily trapped in them

If we don't start making small changes to help species like this and make their lives a little easier, we really do risk losing them forever.

Please share this post to encourage others to help hedgehogs in 2025

A bit late but here is the latest update on our current hotel guests:
Rudolph has gained another 135 grams and has reached weather dependant release weight at 808 grams. I think he maybe with me a tad longer as it us too chilly at the moment for release.
Baldrick is going the wrong way with a drop since last update of 50 grams. He is now 646 grams. He is being treated for Capillaria BUT he is now next door to McGonagol who along with Spot having been play silly buggers! I think McGonagol has told Baldrick to go on a mild hunger strike to avoid eviction aka release. Baldrick completes his treatment on Monday but tomorrow his poobie will get at further microscope inspection.
McGonagol was brought into the cosy kitchen as he was losing too much weight during snoozing and has been brought out of hibernation slowly. He has gained 10 grams. Spot continues to "hoover" up 10 grams and now on a heatpad.
This week we have welcomed more guests in need:
Tesco who is now with Jane and Robin (our fabulous fosters) waiting for a weather window.
McSnotty who is being treated now for cap and lungworm. Why McSnotty - think nursery children with a heavy cold 😂. 73 gram gain in 5 days.
Lastly Scratchy with a dreadful chest but eating for England gaining 89 grams in 5 days.

Need to get the deputy maid over at clean out time for a photo shoot of our current guests. I'm rubbish at trying to get selfies in rubber gloves 🤣🤣🤣

"Fatty" aka as Rudolph put on 57 grams last night taking him to 743 grams. Time for hardening up prior to release so tomorrow he swaps places in the cosy shed with a heatpad with McGonagol who needs to come back to the cosy kitchen to be slowly brought out of hibernation.

You may ask "why"? McGonagol was not at a weight that I am comfortable with for a young hog to hibernate (1st hibernation) but have let him have a go! He is also losing more weight in hibernation than is normally anticipated - so it is time to slowly wake him up, this can take possibly 4 days.

How do I know how much weight he is losing? Weighing him in his nest box. When my hogs 1st snooze they and their nest box are weighed and then checked regularly. They have twice daily checks for any activity. Once a week I will peek inside to check all is well.

Why will it take possibly 4 days? This has to be a slow steady process, it's not like defrosting tomorrow's tea! McGonagol is in a deep stasis / suspension and to rouse him too quickly could cause cardiac arrest and death. Once fully awake McGonagol needs fattening up before going back to the cosy shed.

Who said winter was a quieter time for rescues? Not me x

Update time Baldrick is now 696g up 59g in a week. Rudolph is now 673g up 117g. Spot is out of his brief hibernation and is now 643g up73g. McGonagol decided he didn't want to do this Christmas and New Year malarkey and has gone to sleep with some periodic awakenings! He has lost 22g in a week, which is more than I would like. Will keep a close eye on him and if needs be will swap him with Rudolph as Rudolph needs the cosy shed to harden up before release and McGonagol can be slowly brought out of hibernation!

Happy New Year to all of our followers. Let's hope it is a good one for you all xx

It's been 2 weeks since last inmate update and all is well here at Hattie's Hedgehog Rescue . Baldrick has gained 94grams and is now 637grams. Little Rudolph is growing up and has gained 192grams and is now 556grams. Spot has decided to wake up and has gained 57grams and is now 627grams and McGonagol is exactly the same weight at 596grams. Both Spot and McGonagol are not gaining as much weight as I would like but their poobies are clear.

I would like to take this moment to wish all of our followers a very Happy Christmas. Thank you for all your support throughout the year with donations of pennies, food, gifts from our Amazon wishlist, newspapers etc. Sarah aka Hattie 🦔🦔🦔

Next is Baldrick - 543grams who now has lungworm and a chest infection but continues to gain weight whilst being treated.
Spot and McGonagol continue to play "silly buggers!" Both are weight static at just under 600grams and are dithering about hibernation. Spot has been snoozing for the last 2 days, McGonagol snoozed on Sunday but was up again Monday night!
Newbie Rudolph from Thetford has put on 84grams in 5 days and is now 364grams. Rudolph has roundworm and today started treatment for a chest infection.

Hi Fans - Ron here! Aunty Melanie Bracey took this adorable piccie of me on holiday at hers. Since I'm not on a heatpad I decided to use the cable hole to amuse her with my super cute nose.

The housekeeper has returned from her holiday and picked me and Baldrick up yesterday. There was an awful lot of cooing this morning when she provided room service - I'm not sure what "chonked up" means but she mentioned moving to a big boi room in the cosy shed which sounds interesting.

This morning I weighed in at 730 grams, a gain of 275 grams in 17 days. My pal Baldrick weighed in at 460 grams a gain of 200 grams. Spot and McGonagol went to Aunty Tessa because the housekeeper muttered something about them playing "silly buggers" before she went on holiday. Spot weighed in at 577 grams a gain of 46 grams and McGonagol weighed in at 620 grams a gain of 80 grams.

I had a quick word with them when they got home and Spot told me he had decided to snooze for a whole week! McGonagol added that they had heard the housekeeper muttering about something called getting weight on for release and when they chatted together at Aunty Tessa's they decided that it is rather chilly, rains constantly and that they would rather enjoy continuing their winter break here until the weather improves. I have since heard the housekeeper muttering again about them being bed blockers!
