Hey everyone!
So two big things from One Health society:
We are looking for new committee members for our One Health society. One Health has it's own podcast, website, multiple social media platforms and is set to become a society in it's own right! Things are growing fast and the network that has and continues to be built is really far reaching (from human medicine, environmental sciences, politics, animal welfare, etc etc etc etc!!)
We are struggling to find enough people to set up and man our table at freshers fair on Friday (the 24th), if you don't fancy being part of the society but are happy to help out (can make it worth your while) that's great, or if you'd like to help out for your introduction into the committee, that is fantastic! It is our first freshers fair and we have so much to offer so it would be great to have somebody there to help promote :)
Please message me (Abigail Liston) if you think you could help at freshers fair or if you're keen to be part of the committee! Thank you :)

We thought some of you may be interested in attending the Humane Slaughter Association (HSA) 2021 award webinar "Enhancing Livestock Welfare In Latin America"(Tuesday 12th October at 15:00h UK).

The UK Humane Slaughter Association has selected this year Dr Carmen Gallo from University Austral, Chile to present. It is set to be such an interesting webinar!

Carmen has been working for decades on animal welfare in Chile and South America. She is one of the first colleagues in South America working on animal welfare at slaughter (a region with one of the highest levels of meat production and livestock worldwide) . She is internationally recognised for her work. Her research has led to producing animal welfare legislation and the animal welfare programme she founded is a collaboration centre for the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

If you wish to register in the free webinar you can click on the following link (you can also donate to this charity while registering if you wish - not mandatory):

Hiya! I’m Bonnie, a 2nd year VetMed student. Having come across the ‘One Health’ concept only a few years ago myself, it is certainly something which I feel passionately about. Having a multi-disciplinary holistic approach to pressing health issues should be encouraged, to help educate, collaborate and achieve!

With so many incredible individuals in the student body, I really believe we have the tools to harbour a fantastic community of future generation vets, dentists, doctors and other healthcare and wider One Health-linked degree students, to create a platform where we can communicate. Let’s work together and create a more compassionate and efficient world! ❤️🌏

Hi there, I’m Hana, a second-year vet student. I first heard the term ‘One Health’ while I was studying Biomedical Science and went onto postgraduate study in Veterinary Microbiology with this concept in mind.
It fascinated me that multiple disciplines could come together to solve complex issues regarding ecosystem, individual and population health.

I believe we at Surrey have a role to play in shaping the future of the One Health movement, this society will enable us to explore and debate the different strands that are brought together under the One Health umbrella.

Hi, I'm Mae, a 3rd year vet student. There are so many ways vet med can be used to contribute to wider society, and one health is a great way to help more people. I am particularly interested in public health and legislation- how this can be used to promote animal welfare, improve human health, and protect the environment.

Hiya! I’m Abi, a final year vet student, president of the OneHealth society for 2021. I wanted Surrey to have a OneHealth society because I believe we have some great voices at this vet school that deserve to be heard, which will help to shape the future of veterinary medicine within the wider context. I have interests in welfare, sustainability, primatology and research. I’m passionate about OneHealth because of the vast array of topics it covers, many of which are very pressing. Please feel free to message me if you ever have questions I might be able to help with.
