Pony love .... such a beautiful day ☀️
The importance of herd connections...
A friend of mine who has another track livery called and asked if I could take one of her herd as she was under water and trying to do the best for the horses... The pony is owned by another friend and we were more than happy for rainbow to come and move in.. in fact I loved the idea of having her and my friend at our place. .
We went through introductions as I always do, taking it slowly with double fencing, then single, then when we were sure everyone was settled rainbow went in with our girls. Our girls are very kind and calm and accepted rainbow . Rainbow had been with Beatrice before and they immediately went off together. But.. it wasn't long before rainbow was chasing her off. . . And in fact chasing everyone away. , Our girls obliged and left her alone but her bubble was very big and instead of getting smaller it got bigger, her behaviour got bigger until I sat watching one day and realised she was so angry half the time and the rest just stood staring .. not wanting to engage with any horse or human. . . So I spoke to the owner and then to Tracy and we decided she was grieving. She was grieving the loss of her herd.. she had been with them for many years ...
Now for the fluffy bit ...when I made that connection and we made the arrangements for the box I went and told rainbow, and for the first time she curled round me and almost breathed a sigh of relief ... I cried I must say but not because I was sad she was leaving , but sad she was so sad ... We had provided care and add lib hay, space , horses, herbs, but none of it mattered to her psychological health because she clearly didn't feel safe , she didn't feel part of the herd , she didn't want to be part of the herd, she wanted hers..
So off she went four days after making the decision.. and I have to say she is just so happy .. they all greeted her, she walked with them round their new field and my heart felt better ...and I'm sure hers did too ❤️ she's the chestnut with the flaxen mane and tail. Like she never left ☺️
Did someone say ..... BOYS 👀👀👀👀👀🐎🐎🐎🐎
Absolutely love this meeting of rainbow and the herd.. ❤️ Beauty's subtle guidance and the flow of horse energy made this magical to watch.. well I think so anyway ✨😍
Welcome rainbow 🌈😁.. I had the pleasure of looking after rainbow years ago and she just moved into our new place. ❤️ We look forward to her I integrating with the herd. We like to take things slowly so double fenced , then single fenced then in she goes as long as everyone looks happy. To be honest they all looked happy today but best to give it time 🙌
We think that track systems are helping horses so much, gain better overall mental and physical health.
But we really want to salute those people who have created their own tracks and more so those extremely dedicated individuals who have opened up their yards / tracks as naturalised livery yards.
It takes a lot of courage to go against the norm and put a huge amount of time and money into projects like this.
But the most forgotten bit is the amount of time and dedication to detail it takes and the serious risk of burnout, as these individuals are generally very driven and single minded and will also lose sleep on a regular basis and I know that they also generally have to supplement their income in other ways while they are try to run these places.
They will receive criticism on a daily basis and have to constantly defend their position.
So if you have your horse at one of these exceptional places, please give them a shout out here and tell others about how well your horses are doing?
Let’s put a lot of positivity back to them 😊
And if you have a track or track livery please post details here so we can let more people know about what you do😊
The track system in the picture below is one that I built by myself about 20 years ago, so we have a good understanding of paddock paradise/ track systems 😊
*we are now full but holding a waiting list *
Track life... So unfortunately for some, our track has sprouted grass ! Which means some of our EMS waiting list horses have been taken off as it's not going to be ideal for them. . So .. if your looking for a more natural way of life but still like your horse to have a nibble on some grass we are the place for you ! Please get in touch for more information. Many thanks.
Beauty wondering what I was doing taking a little lay down in the field this morning.. her trust is growing , she seeks me out for rubs now and again. Still says no sometimes too.. but that's ok.. we are all allowed an opinion in this field ❤️

Some great advice from Deb's Crosoer from the Hoof geek academy. ..
We all remember to give our horses food and water, to check there’s no injuries, and to pick out their hooves every day, but there’s one part of the daily routine for keeping horses that’s often overlooked… In my opinion it could even be more important than picking out the hooves…
It’s probably not as important as food, water or no injuries though. They’re pretty fundamental! However this does come a pretty close second…
Taking your horses digital pulse!
(look! I put it in bold so it must be important!)
The digital pulse can tell you what’s going on with the horse. If there’s any inflammation in the body, you can detect it through a digital pulse really early on. A digital pulse often shows up a day or 2 before a lameness and is an early warning sign for laminitis.
Many people think if their horse hasn’t had laminitis they don’t need to take the pulse regularly - or at all. But the truth is, any horse can get laminitis, and if you take the pulse regularly you have a better chance of getting ahead of the problem, often preventing any serious issue completely!
You see - when you find a digital pulse, one of the very first pieces of information you’ll need is… ‘Was the pulse there yesterday?’ There’s only one way to know that, and that’s to take the pulse every day.
Just as we pick the feet out to check there’s no stones and have a look. We don’t actually NEED to pick the feet out, what we’re actually doing it checking that there’s nothing wrong.
We’re actually checking that we don’t need to check! (yup - clever hey!)
So what we’re doing when we’re checking a digital pulse is confirming that it’s all ok.
The second thing that holds people back is feeling unsure, or nervous about what to do, and often I find people don’t like to ask. So I created a simple ‘How To’ sheet about it. It’s only a few pages long, and that’s because it’s got really big pictures in it :)
There’s even tips for how to take a pulse on a heavily feathered horse.
How To Take a Digital Pulse
Start taking your horses digital pulse every day. Some horses show a pulse in 1 foot but not others, so make sure to check all 4 feet.
You need to know what’s normal for your horse, and normal should be almost undetectable.
If you get varying results with this daily check it can be helpful to keep a diary. Score how strong you think the pulse is out of 3 and write it down.
0 = none found
1 = very mild, difficult to feel
2 = definitely there (also, you probably want to be changing you management routine at this point)
3 = Oh CRAP! Call the vet! Sometimes called a bounding pulse, you’ll know it when you feel it.
If you’re really unsure and don’t have much to compare to, then go around the yard and feel other peoples horses (do ask first though!)
