Case of the week:
This hen was loosing weight because she had a tumour in her mouth. Sadly she had to be put to sleep due to the effect on her welfare. It had become infected with opportunistic pathogens including fungus, bacteria and trichomonas (canker) but the original cause was actually a tumour which was good news for the rest of the flock.

Case of the week, following on from last week
If I am very lucky, I will see a pretty picture like this of salpingitis. Can you see the annular appearance to the mass of exudate (bottom of photo in the region of 5-6 o clock) that matches the previous photo? The black zone around it was fluid.

Case of the week
This is the inside of a "lash egg", which is caseous exudate from an oviduct. The term used to describe inflammation of the oviduct is salpingitis, and when affected can contain fluid or caseous exudate. Finding these could be a one-off, or suggest a hen has a lot more inside her. If a large ball of exudate backs up within the oviduct, it acts like a "space-occupying lesion" and will get in the way of normal organ function. Next week I'll post a diagnostic ultrasound image I took when investigating salpingitis.

If you are concerned about salpingitis, please submit a consult request form via my website if you are a new client, or email me if you are an existing client.

Salmonella vaccination

Please let me know if anyone would like to discuss Salmonella vaccination for their hens.
Birds would need two doses of vaccine, 4 weeks apart, boosted every 18-months.
The aim is to reduce the load of Salmonella in vaccinated hens to significantly reduce the risk of food-bourne infection.
This may be of particular interest to those giving away or selling eggs, or when birds are handled regularly by at-risk groups including children or the elderly.
I deliberately use the term "reduce" rather than eliminate because eggs still come out of the back end of a chicken and there are many other reasons to enact good hygiene when handling pets or eggs.

If you'd like reading hefty reports then I find this link fascinating....if you don't here's a summary:
"Lion Code and Laid in Britain are currently the only egg assurance schemes in the UK, and under the FSA advice, the only eggs that are suitable to be consumed less-than-thoroughly cooked by vulnerable groups." "shell eggs not produced under these schemes was considered ‘low’ (rare, but does occur) risk"

This risk profile will examine the current situation of Salmonella in UK-produced table eggs, and the factors that may influence the current risk of Salmonella .

Tip of the week: remember to check all housing thoroughly for red mites this time of year until late Autumn. Even plastic housing can be affected. Nooks and crannies are the places to hunt. Remember they may not be red during the daytime, they may be silver or grey if they haven't recently fed.
You can find my red mite webinar on my website blog, or book a consult if you are concerned about them.

A lovely young lady gave me a generous gift.
Faeces tell me a lot about what might be happening inside a bird. This photo clearly shows the four main parts of a chicken dropping that I look out for. (Not all four may be obvious at once, I was lucky!)

The bulky intestinal dropping is covered in some white strands of urate's from the kidney. The caramel/toothpaste-like dropping originates from the caeca which has some e bubbles in it because its the site of fermentation. Finally, there is some water that has been absorbed at 6oClock to the main dropping. It is normal for birds to pass water as they defaecate because they don't have a bladder.

Case of the week

Magic trick! This poor lad pronged his eye on something, perhaps a beak. He developed an ulcer on the surface of his eye, and inflammation inside his eye. I applied a special ocular stain which made the ulcer (missing surface of his eye) fluoresce under UV light.

Case of the week

Sometimes it's hard to tell between over preening and bird-on-bird pecking. I look for broken feathers or chucks missing from feathers so that they appear V-shaped or Y-shaped. Usually this means someone's been having a go.

Thanks to popular demand I am going to try and get my case of the week back up and running again.

This week's case of the week was the gorgeously fluffy Marmite, an adult hybrid X who had a very large bottom with a wide-stance. It turns out she was full of fluid. I removed 950ml from her tummy (coelom). Afterwards, she was very keen to fill the space I made with food. Well done Marmite!
Tip: birds who run out of space inside their coelom due to a disease process, will go off their food or start backing-up inside and develop secondary symptoms e.g. crop stasis or sour crop.

Changes in environment has an effect on hens, both mentally and physiologically. The lifting of an Avian Influenza housing order is a time to celebrate, but the new environment has the potential to challenge hens.
