○BUSINESS UPDATE○

Hi all,

What an incredible year it has been here in Newquay. Moving my small business from Suffolk to Cornwall wasn't easy, and I'm so grateful for your support and custom over this period. However, as always, I want to offer the best possible service to you here in Newquay whilst meeting the demand of the local area, and therefore, Toodle Lou Pet Care is now changing.

From this week, I will only be offering cat, small furry, and exotic pet drop ins. These are available both morning and evening, with the added benefit of my veterinary nursing skills on top, like administering medications to your pet whilst you're away. This is hugely beneficial for those thyroid cats or those receiving one-off treatments. I will still have appointments available for nail clipping and a**l glands. However, with my work within veterinary practice, these will be limited. Loyalty cards for these services still very much apply!

Booking is the same. Please contact me here via what's app - 07460 838 985 - with a free meet and greet for every drop in visit booked.

Any questions, please shout.

My diary for the rest of 2024 and 2025 is now open! 😄

Last week I met beautiful Blossom here in Cornwall, who was referred to me by a dog trainer. Blossom had been struggling with grooming around her ears and as a result had 2 big dreadlocks either side. They were tight to the skin and must of felt very uncomfortable.

With some gentle encouragement, combined with the fabulous efforts of her trainer and owner, I was able to clip out the matted fur and give her a good brush.

Well done Blossom, you are a super star ❤️

Do you know what makes your pets anxious?

By understanding what triggers your pet to become anxious will help you narrow down the route cause and apply positive reinforcement training, counter conditioning and desensitisation training to help them through their worries.

Common triggers are often seen when:

Being left alone / abandonment
Meeting strangers or other animals
Noises like fireworks
Journeys in the car
Visits to the vets

See if you can notice what triggers your pet to become anxious and make a plan to make a change! Remember, an anxious pet isn't a happy pet and we can do lots to make a difference to their lives 💙

Whilst often a last resort, dogs with uncontrolled anxiety are more likely to resort to aggression if their communication signals are ignored and the perceived threat continues. Their threshold decreases with anxiety, making it more likely to act on impulse.

Common causes can be seen....
.. When visiting the vets.. With strangers.. Towards other animals.. When they feel they have lack of control or choice.

This is why it is so important for all dog owners to understand the basics of canine body language and respond accordingly. The canine ladder of aggression is a great starting point for this. Swipe left 👈

❔What is anxiety and how does it present in our pets?

Anxiety is the anticipation of a threat or fear and it is not considered to be a normal behaviour in our pets.

Pets that are anxious may find it hard to settle, be on edge and/or present with depression or other behavioural changes like aggression. Long term anxiety can also lead to health problems like low immunity and high blood pressure.

Cats will often have their feet planted, ears back and down and be hypervigilant of their surroundings. Where as dogs express appeasement behaviours, have their tails tucks and narrow their eyes.

OK, admit it, your dog knows your schedule better than you do, which is why I've promoted Oddie to Toodle Lou's very own PROFESSIONAL ALARM CLOCK & BARKETING MANAGER... so far he's smashing it!

He wakes up each day 5-10 minutes before I do, in order to prepare me for the big day ahead. Moving forward throughout the day, Oddie can tell me exactly when lunch is (or should be) and the ever coveted nap time slot. But every good manager knows that there are tweaks to be made and there's a business to barket, so sometimes I'm quite surprised when I suddenly have a few more walks inserted into my daily and nightly routines, a reel or two to create from his expert modelling skills and fish cake to bake and sample.... We're still going through his training!

SAY NO TO ECOLLARS!

I don't normally write posts likes this but....

Whilst searching social media today, I was absolutely devastated to come across a reasonably new and local dog trainer offering E-Collar training. Scrolling back over their feed, I found the use of prong collars too, which I'll talk about in another post, another time.

So... E-Collars. What are they?

A: E (which stands for electric) Collars are collars which work by sending an electric current into a dogs neck to shock them. The intensity of the shock can vary, but no matter how used, the principle is the same.

Shock collars are harmful and can cause psychological distress to our pets to include phobias and high levels of stress.... not to mention the risk of skin burns.

The shock "forces" a dog to behave, with little concern for the root cause. It can lead to 'helplessness' and removes the dogs freedom to problem solve and make choices. In essence shock collars can cripple a dogs learning ability and can actually exacerbate aggressive behaviours in the future.

So.... If a 'trainer' advises or offers you the use of a shock collar, please say no.

Toodle Lou Pet Care is all about positive reinforcement, engaging and building strong relationships with our dogs and allowing them to be them! I embrace the naughtiness within our hounds, encourage their inner puppy and encourage YOU to love your life with your dog.

If you're ever in doubt which route to take with your dog's training, please contact me. I'll be more than happy to help.

📷 : photo of my 10 year old family dog Archie for attention.

⬅️ Swipe left to see an example of a shock collar and prong collar.... Don't get me started on the cropped ears 🙅‍♀️

Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart!

If your groomer suggests they clean your pet's teeth, I would advise you that you decline their offer!

It is impossible to clean an animal’s teeth properly without them being under an anaesthetic and although your groomer might think they are being helpful, they are probably doing more harm than good!

An anaesthesia free dental can't;

* Properly examine or clean under the gum line, where the most damaging and painful infections will be. The teeth may look clean but they will actually still be teeming with bacteria.

* Assess the health of the tooth roots, this can only be done with deep probing, which is painful, and x-rays which can't be taken conscious.

* Teeth have four sides, only the outer ones can be reached in an awake pet, meaning cleaning is ineffective AND inadequate.

Also, many pets will find the procedure stressful, uncomfortable and it is very, very easy to damage the gums.

Conscious teeth cleaning by groomers is NOT a good idea at all!

The RCVS - Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, the American Veterinary Dental College, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the WSAVA - World Small Animal Veterinary Association all advise against anaesthesia free dentals!

Please don't put your pet though one and always consult your vet if you are concerned about their teeth!

Read the Royal College Of Veterinary Surgeons opinion on anaesthesia free dentals here; https://animalowners.rcvs.org.uk/document-library/a-statement-on-anaesthesia-free-dental-procedures-for-cats-dogs/
