Meet Solomon aka Solly, our Superstar Brave Pet of the Month! π₯³π¦ΈββοΈ
Solly is one of our beautiful FIV positive house cats that we see on a fairly regular basis, and a few months ago, he wasn't quite right. He wasn't eating as well as usual and had lost some weight, he was given some anti inflammatories in case it was a flare up of his mouth sores but unfortunately he didn't improve as he usually does. He was transferred to our amazing partner 24hour hospital, Holly House Vets , and was hospitalised and treated for ketoacidosis after a diagnosis of diabetes πͺ
Diabetes usually presents as drinking loads (and we mean loads!), urinating lots too and often with weight loss, sometimes a poor coat but otherwise well. Sometimes however, diabetes can present as being very very poorly due to something called ketones developing in the body. This is due to prolonged high blood sugar/glucose and the body not being able to produce or use the insulin correctly to deal with it. The body makes these ketones from fat stores to use as energy but unregulated by the normal insulin/glucose process, the levels increase and the body's acid base balance shifts leading to diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). DKA is a medical emergency and if untreated will be fatal! Treatment requires intensive hospitalisation with experienced vets to correct the ketones and acid/ base shift. This involves fluids, intravenous glucose and soluble insulin with 24hr monitoring and treatment of any of the other effects that may have occurred due to the condition. Holly House were amazing! π₯°
Solly was in the hospital for 6 days and was an absolutely puurrfect patient for his treatment with the vets, nurses, and VCA's. He made a great recovery from the DKA and had a freestyle libre fitted to come home for Gemma at Robin's Nest to take over his care again and get his diabetes stable with twice daily insulin injectionsπ
Over the last couple of months he has had regular checks, his blood glucose checked at home and full blood samples taken to send to the lab to check his organ function and fructosamine (a diabetes marker)π©ΈSome diabetic cats can go into remission with good control of their blood glucose and Solly is showing signs this may be happening with all his owners' hard work and dedication to his care....watch this space! We will be fitting another freestyle libre at home to monitor his glucose 24/7 soon to see if he has gone into remission π€ The freestyle libre is used for human diabetics in combination with a phone app to monitor glucose and is gold standard for cat diabetes management. Solly is going from strength to strength and has started to gain some weight and play again (and has some fab laboratory numbers too!)
Solly has been so brave for both his hospital stay and all of his checks and tests at home with Gemma so we had to award this magnificent moggie our first Brave pet of the Month award. Well done Solly! We hope you like your catnip fishy more than you liked the rosette!! π΅π£π₯³
