ENRICHMENT
Enrichment is all about adding to your dog's life. Our dogs live very controlled lives and don't get to make many decisions. Lead walks don't always provide dog with sufficient mental stimulation and this can lead to boredom, frustration, and problem behaviours.
Enrichment doesn't need to be difficult or expensive. These spaniels are having a great time just sniffing out kibble from the rough grass.
Enrichment activities are especially important when dogs are on limited exercise due to age, injury, or inclement weather.
Do you have a 'reactive' dog? A dog that feels big emotions around other dogs? We can help with that!
Secret has learned to make great choices... First she comes away from the doodle and asks for a treat, then when the doodle proved to be no threat she went and said a quick 'hello'!
We will be taking bookings for behaviour work ups again from January.

Loose Lead Walking
Not a veterinary problem, or even a behaviour one but this is a question that comes up time and again.
Why do dogs pull? Because they walk faster than people. And because it works.
What do you mean 'it works'? Dog pulls, we walk faster to get them to the place they want to go. If that happens to be somewhere that you take the lead off, even better!
How do we fix it? With patience! Train a 'heel' position at home with food. This is great for getting your dog in close past another dog or other distraction. But it isn't great for a whole walk. On walks practise zero tolerance for pulling. If there is ANY tension on the lead you stop. Just stop. Let the dog work out that you only move on a loose lead. Forget straight lines for a bit - changing direction keeps the dog guessing and avoids the rush to get to the next tree or lamppost.
But...I don't always have time! Use different 'clothes'. I walk my pups in a harness when not training and on a falt collar when they are practising loose lead walking. If you are inconsistent pulling gets worse, not better.
Here are my adults (2, 5, and 9) on a morning walk. Are they perfect? No. Are they good enough for a relaxed walk? Absolutely!
"Why is my dog itchy? We've used flea stuff!"
If you are using a prescription or pharmacy strength flea product, it probably isn't fleas. But at this time of year it could definitely be winter coat. Secret is really enjoying a good groom to get out all the dead hair. Grooming out dead hair also helps your dog keep cooler as the weather warms up.
I couldn't avoid taking elderly Rebus out for his afternoon walk so I put his Equafleece on to keep him toasty and dry.
Old dogs need special care in cold weather. It is important they stay mobile with short walks and may appreciate a coat on to keep them warm at night as well as on walks. Watch out for ice as slipping can aggravate arthritis. Try some indoor activities like sniffing out toys or treats if you can't take your dog for his usual walks.
Planting a herb garden can be a lovely way to provide your pet with enriching smells and tastes. My dogs are particularly enjoying the Corsican Mint today.
Snuffle Mats
This is 10 week old Cafferty's first time using a snuffle mat (this one is a cute snuffle monkey!). They can slow down a greedy eater, or make eating more fun for a fussy eater. I have made it easy this time but it will get harder. There are many online videos on how to make snuffle toys. If your dog is a chewer only use these toys under supervision.
Getting a large arthritic dog in and out of the car can be a challenge. So can training an already wobbly dog to use a ramp!
Why not start training now? You can start with the ramp on the ground at home before moving to the car.
EASTER EGG HUNT...sort of!
One of the easiest enrichment activities for cats, dogs, guinea pigs, and rabbits is scatter feeding. Sprinkle their food with a few treats in the grass and leave them to hunt out their food!
Scatter feeding is a great way to provide gentle mental and physical exercise for dogs of all ages. Cluedo is 11 weeks old and Quincy is nearly 15!
