I got to work with the very handsome Monty today. He’s an overseas rescue dog and like many overseas dogs struggles with reactivity. The key thing with such dogs is to understand that they’re having a hard time, not giving you a hard time. Their behaviour is a symptom of how they feel in that moment. Monty’s lovely mum now has a training plan in place.

3 days of hard work and I’m pleased to say I’m now a Gold Scent Instructor with . Maple also achieved a merit in her Gold level trial. I’m very proud of this crazy Malinois and how far we have come in the last year. She’s far from an easy dog but she will make me a better trainer and I’m thankful for her every day.

Today’s doggy in need of help is Ollie. He struggles with visitors coming into his home. The training we implemented showed lots of changes in just half an hour. Ollie’s lovely family now have a raining plan in place to support him emotionally and help him overcome his anxiety.

POSITIVE INTERRUPTERS
POSITIVE INTERRUPTERS

If your dog is about to do something you don’t like, for example run out into the garden and bark, you can use a positive interrupter to prevent that behaviour and motivate your dog to choose a better behaviour. Here we have used a squeaker as Bambi’s positive interrupter. Every time Bambi hears the squeaker she stops whatever she is doing and looks to her mum for a reward. That reward is given for her response and focus. Dogs like Bambi bark because they’re alert and sensitive to sounds. Punishing the barking instead will only seek to make her feel worse about her environment and damage the relationship she has with her handler. Way to go Bambi! Keep up the good work 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

A massive well done to Cazbags Murphy and Gizmo. Hard work does pay off. Dogs like Gizmo with high prey drives CAN be taught solid recall.

Teaching a solid “out” is so important, especially for high drive dogs like Maple. This was the very first thing I taught Maple when we brought her home at 14 weeks old.
