There are so many reasons we use harnesses for SPPOT dogs, but here's a nice clear explanation of the physical dangers of any type of collar, when it's pulled tight.
There is no piece of equipment that will stop pulling, only long term, consistent training does that, but a good harness will prevent physical injury, whether you choose to train your dog or not.

January is Wellbeing Month at SPPOT with a whole raft of activities planned for our daycare dogs, from scent work to parkour, pattern games, to flash mob training and Tellington Touch training too.
For people as well, we have yoga/chair yoga; mindfulness & meditation and Tai Chi.
We also have Karen Chandler Solutions with us every week, for Wellness & Resilience Workshops.
Look out for our regular updates throughout January from Erin, Beth, Kath and the whole SPPOT Team ❤️

SPPOT's Accredited Training programme forms part of our core purpose of bringing together the needs of people with the needs of dogs.
The annual Presentation Ceremony was at the Christmas party this year and many staff and volunteers were awarded Agored Cymru accreditation and qualification certificates in dog care, welfare, training and walking.
We also introduced new awards to celebrate individual contributions made by SPPOT volunteers.
We've also realised that SPPOT has now grown to the point where the Presentation Ceremony needs its own event instead of being part of Christmas or Halloween. So look out for early news of our June Celebration in the next few weeks ☀️🍓🍹🌞

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through SPPOT, not a creature was stirring, especially not a dog!
The security alarm has been set with care, in the hopes that the hard working team are home and not there.
That they're having fun before going to bed. While visions of Gavin and Stacy tomorrow dance in their heads.,🎄🎁🎄🤣
We've had a lovely December with our Christmas Party and Presentations, two wreath making workshops, the Day Opportunities Christmas Fayre and our amazing Christmas Coffee Morning and Fundraiser.

Wishing all our customers, volunteers, staff, their families, dogs and everyone reading this, a very Happy Christmas

A little something for the weekend - why using long lines is a great idea for young dogs

ACE Freework has many applications for individual dogs and groups, which are explained nicely by the Wood Green Animal Trust here https://woodgreen.org.uk/pet-advice/dog/what-is-free-work-and-how-can-it-help-my-dog/#:~:text=ACE%20(Animal%20Centred%20Education)%20Free,the%20most%20%E2%80%93%20a%20double%20win!
At SPPOT, we have such a companionable group of dogs that we can use it as a gentle group activity, on a very warm day.
It looks like a room full of enrichment activities - which it is; but by having activities at different heights and angles, with different surfaces underfoot, it becomes a more challenging sensory experience.
It also offers canine professionals and care givers the chance to observe dogs' posture and gait which can indicate underlying pain and discomfort and possible causes of behaviour changes.

While the other dogs are happily mooching around the ACE Freework resources, Rocco found a far more comfortable way to enjoy a snuffle mat 😃😀😄😄😀

Music and dancing is really good for you, which is why Kath, our team well-being person, got everyone dancing after lunch again. YMCA though guys, really?
It's easy to see why Mabel was looking on, so bemused 🤣
It doesn't have to be very warm for Mabel to take a dip in any water but our Oz-man went in today as well. If you listen carefully you can hear one of Tracy's lovely made-up songs about dogs and how they help people 🤩🥰❤️🥰🤩
Here's Team Leader Vicki smashing the lead walking training with Arnie.
Not many daycare services offer amazing force free dog training as part of the service.
And that was on the way to the Racecourse for his walk, not the way back #justsaying #sppot #dogdaycare
A fun day's training today with a room full of trainees and very willing dogs.
This looks pretty chaotic but what's happening is several off lead dogs are choosing to trot alongside any/every person, which was great 😃
Angel had so much fun during her first time at the dog groomers. She was a bit unsure at first however, she soon found her playful puppy side.
Little Douggie enjoying his run on a long line ☺️🐶

SPPOT - Supporting People & Pets through Opportunity & Training
SPPOT is a unique social enterprise offering dogs and their human families, a highly affordable, award winning dog walking service across Pembrokeshire and high quality daycare for dogs.
We are able to embed positive reward based training into our dog walking and daycare services, because all our staff and volunteers are themselves qualified and accredited in dog care, training and welfare.
SPPOT is an Agored Cymru Recognised Centre, delivering accredited training courses in canine training and welfare for adults and young people who experience barriers to work and education. This enables trainees to become part of SPPOT’s team as Volunteer Dog Walkers who walk dogs all over Pembrokeshire and K9 Keyworkers who volunteer their time at our dedicated headquarters in Haverfordwest providing high quality daycare for dogs.
The dog walking & daycare are offered at a competitive rates for the general public with a significant concession for vulnerable people in the community. Thus we can bring together the needs of two people, through shared care of a dog, benefiting both people and the dog.
Dogs are scientifically proven to be of significant health and social benefit to people, therefore SPPOT’s progressive enterprise model will reduce dependence on health and social care services which are already under strain. People also have the capacity to reduce the suffering and neglect of dogs.
Society in the UK is still geared towards fully able people and it remains incredibly difficult for disabled people to find truly flexible, supportive employment. In order to claim government benefit, people with long term disabilities and illnesses must focus on what they cannot do, in order to qualify for money to live.
SPPOT focuses on what people can do, for example, we will focus on a person’s ability to work six hours a week for eight months of the year. The current mainstream system simply rejects people who cannot work 48 weeks of the year.
The SPPOT Team has enormous collective experience and wide ranging skills and fully understands the requirements of commercial business and also traditional health and social care services but believes there needs to be a fundamental shift in the UK’s attitude to people who have long term barriers to full employment, towards ‘can train’, ‘can learn’, ‘can work’ and ‘can help others’. The SPPOT Team are successfully demonstrating this every day, through delivery of robust, high quality, outcomes driven services for people and dogs.
