This lovely Springer Spaniel recently come to see us for continuous sneezing. We sedated her and in the pot is the blade of grass we pulled out from her nose. She's made a full recovery.

Blood sampling in sheep is such an important tool, from diagnosing disease to preventing problems with nutrition and trace elements. It is being performed expertly here by our new Vet Lexi.

Just a little information about the Poultry Housing Order for flocks over 50 birds

In response to the significant increase of findings of avian influenza in kept and wild birds, housing measures to protect poultry & captive birds from are coming into force in Cheshire, Cumbria, Derbyshire, Durham, East Riding of Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Merseyside, Norfolk, North Yorkshire, Northumberland, Nottinghamshire, Rutland, Shropshire, South Yorkshire, Staffordshire, Suffolk, Tyne & Wear and West Yorkshire from 00:01 on Thursday 30 Oct 2025.

This means that from this time it will be a legal requirement for all keepers of over 50 birds and all keepers who sell or give away eggs, meat or poultry (even if they keep fewer than 50 birds), in these areas to house their birds. Keeping your birds undercover away from wild birds is vital to minimise the risk of them becoming infected with avian influenza by wild birds.

If you are currently in a Protection Zone outside of these areas, you must continue to house your birds.

Davinia as some of will know is studying for her European College of Small Ruminant Health and Medicine diploma which will mean she can claim specialist status in sheep and other small ruminants. She already is an RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Sheep

Just an example of how no two days are the same for us at the practice, one day we can be performing routine operations on small animals and the next we can be operating and doing a cow caesarean on farm as shown here by Elizabeth and Alice.

Variety is the spice of life and we love being a busy independent mixed practice.

We've had this cat handed into us from the Hawes area, the assumption is it's a feral for neutering but it's quite friendly and before we operate we wanted to check it didn't belong to anyone. If you recognise him or thing he might be yours please can you ring on 01969 650263

Just a crateful of puppies for a Sunday morning. These gorgeous pups recently came in for their first vaccinations and microchips.

An animal's first trip to the vets is so import in building their confidence at the vets as well as making sure they're fit and healthy.

Sophie who many of you will recognise from both the Askrigg and Leyburn branch has passed all her exams and is now a fully qualified Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN).
