***For Sale***

3yo Elusive Pimpernel gelding who holds a very strong dam line. A relation of Grand National winner Comply Or Die, Graded winner Pleasant Company (second in the 2018 National behind Tiger Roll) and 2m hurdle winner Flame Creek.

Has a half-brother to 2m winner Goodwin, who beat Cannock Park at Newbury last season - and we think our horse has the potential to compete in the top races over fences this season.

Purchased with the invaluable help of John Costello - the doyen of sourcing classy young horses - in Ireland, he's an eye-catching individual and lovely mover who has impressed us with his work at home so far and possesses an exciting future on the track.

A great opportunity to become involved at our new yard with a horse we believe has stacks of potential.

OFF back down to Uttoxeter again this evening with new recruit INOUE (5.05) who makes his debut for us after joining from Stuart Crawford’s stable. He ran in three bumpers for his old yard, once in an abandoned race at Kelso then at Down Royal and Perth, so he’s built up a little bit of track experience ahead of going novice hurdling today.

We have decided to put a hood on him because he’s run free in his races so far. We spoke to Gavin Sheehan, who rode him at Perth in May, and while he ran with the choke out a bit there he was still very positive about him.

In the past he’s worn earplugs and has run a couple of different ways, going from the front and being dropped in, so he’s probably one who will take a bit of working out. He’s by Walk In The Park and you find a lot of them are a bit lively. So today will be about teaching him his job and we’ll likely drop him in again.

He’ll be trying his best, of course, but he’s one who needs to learn how to race properly before we ask too much of him. The big thing for us this time is getting him to settle, show him his job and see what he’s like with a hurdle in front of him for the first time in a race. He’s schooled well at home and if we can get him to drop his head and relax we’ll be happy.

🍰 Introducing our Cake Chest! 🍰

We believe in providing our customers with fresh and delicious cakes every day, but sometimes we end up with a few extras at the end of the day. Rather than baking less and limiting your choices, we've come up with a solution that we hope will bring out the best in everyone.

Every night, we will leave a Cake Chest outside the cafe filled with the cakes that didn't sell. You can simply pay as much as you think the cakes are worth and enjoy a sweet treat guilt-free. We trust in the honesty and integrity of our community, and we hope that in the mornings we will find an empty cake box but a full cash box.

Let's spread kindness and good vibes with our Cake Chest. See you at the cafe! 🍰💕

TOMORROW truly is the start of an exciting new era as we send out our first runner from our new yard at Hazelrigg. The moving process is pretty much complete and everyone - horses, staff, trainer and family - is settling into the new surroundings.

It goes without saying it’s a top-class facility and we’ll show off everything we’ve got here properly soon enough once we’ve got it all operating the way we want it to.

ARCTIC AMBITION (2.00) has the honour (or should that be pressure!) of being the one kicking off this new chapter for us down at Worcester, where we’ve headed off to tonight. We were really happy with his run at Cartmel last time, justifying our belief that he had a solid each-way chance going into it. The conditions and change of running style, being put more forward than he has in the past, all contributed to a good effort. We’ll run him similarly this time and I think having longer straights and less turning than you need to do at Cartmel will help him.

The handicapper has put him up 4lbs from the last time, which I think is a bit harsh and means he’s only going to get 1lb from the top-weighted horse. That frustrated me when I heard because I thought two would have been fair but in the end it was double that. There’s nothing we can do about it, though, so hopefully with conditions again in his favour he’ll kick on once more and be competitive again.
All the best,
Paul

Enjoyed our trip to Uttoxeter on Sunday with Breizh River, who ran an absolute cracker to be 3rd under Henry Brooke (beaten just over 2L) in a really competitive handicap chase on just his third start over fences. Here he is parading beforehand. Thanks to everyone at Uttoxeter for making us so welcome and for putting on some excellent prize money. Worth the trip!

SADLY we have to start today’s blog on a negative note as we lost Haveyougotmymoney at Bangor last night. I was down in Wales with him and didn’t notice anything untoward during the race, but by the time I got to the stable block he was being attended to by the vets. Unfortunately, it seems one of the horses around him has struck into him and as a result he suffered a fracture in his leg.

It was just a freakish accident, he’s just been unlucky that it’s hit him in the wrong place, but that doesn’t make it any easier to take because he was a horse we all loved. He was the most ultra-consistent competitor and the only times he ran a below race was when the handicapper had him in a bit of a grip. He was a funny little horse who had his own way of doing things so it was sad to say goodbye to him last night. It’s tough on his owners and the girls in the yard because they spent so much time caring for him.

Earlier in the day at Cartmel, Arctic Ambition ran a cracker to finish second. Like we said in the blog, we expected him to run well because we felt he was coming back to himself at home - so we’re glad he proved us right!

He’ll go to Worcester on the 8th of July now, which is a quick turnaround but he didn’t lose any weight yesterday and is bouncing this morning. You wouldn’t think he’d had a race. He’ll be entered in a 0-105 so even if he goes up a few pounds he’ll still get in.

Tomorrow we will run BREIZH RIVER (2.25) at Uttoxeter in the Bet365 handicap chase over two miles. It’s a competitive race, which you would expect given the prize money on offer, but the horses above him in the handicap are a bit older and more exposed than he is. I like the fact we have the young horse coming through in this race.

I was happy to see Paul Nicholls’ horse Matterhorn not turn up because he was the one I feared most when I saw the entries. We are getting a lot of weight from the top two in the handicap and I’m pretty sure we have improvement to come and have a bit left ahead of the 122 handicap mark.

It’s a Class 2 and there are plenty of previous winners in there, but we can’t wait to step him up and see what’s under the bonnet.

All the best,
Paul

The horseboxes are heading far and wide on Friday, with Arctic Ambition bound for Cartmel and Haveyougotmymoney making the long haul to Bangor-on-Dee. For his sins, he’ll have me for company on the nine-hour round trip to North Wales!

The return to Cartmel should be a good fit for ARCTIC AMBITION (3.40), as he ran well to be second there over this 2m5f trip for his previous trainer Gordon Elliott last summer. His form figures don’t look overly inspiring in four runs for us, but we’ve slowly been getting to know him, and I thought his most recent run at Bangor three weeks ago was better than it looks on paper.

He got a wide trip, covering plenty of additional ground in the process, and I don’t think he really stayed the 3m either. The handicapper has dropped him 4lb, meaning he’s able to run in a 0-100 for the first time, while his best form for Gordon was all on better ground. Craig Nichol will probably ride him a bit more positively and, as long as conditions remain the same, I’d like to think he’ll run a big race back on familiar terrain.

HAVEYOUGOTMYMONEY (9.00) stays every yard - and more - of the 2m7f he tackles at Bangor. Crucially, I think he’ll find this left-handed galloping track much more to his liking than right-handed Perth, which was also a bit on the sharp side for him last time.
He’s still 3lb above his last winning mark, despite the handicapper easing him 3lb for that last run. However, he was beaten only half-a-length off this mark at Musselburgh in November under Dylan Johnston, who seems to get on better with him than any of the other jockeys who’ve ridden him for us. He’s another I expect to run well at an each-way price.

Finally, BREIZH RIVER is unbeaten in two starts over fences this summer. He really looked the business last time out at Bangor and has earned a crack at a valuable handicap chase Uttoxeter on Sunday. I’ll be back on Saturday with an update once I’ve had a chance to analyse the race and the opposition in more detail.

Until then, all the best.
Paul

Hello and welcome to my new blog!

These are exciting times for me, my family and my staff here at Paul Robson Racing as we embark on our new venture at Hazelrigg stables. That will be our new home from now on, as we move into what was until recently Rose Dobbin’s yard in Northumberland. The opportunity to take over Rose’s superb premises is an opportunity we simply couldn’t let pass us by…so here we are!

We’re in the process of getting everything moved down from our current base at Spittal-on-Rule in the Scottish Borders and hope to have our first runners from Hazelrigg in the middle of July.

That means our three runners over the next few days will be our last from Spittal-on-Rule. I’ll be sad to say goodbye to the place, as will my wife Steph and our boys. But this is the right time to move on to what we all hope will be bigger and better things. I have big ambitions for my training career which I’m convinced, with the right support and horse power, we can achieve.

Certainly, we won’t lack for top-class facilities at Hazelrigg, which is one of the most impressive and state-of-the-art training centres you’ll find anywhere in Britain. More on that once we get up and running at the new place…

We are posting this on Instagram and Facebook at the moment, but we’ve got a new website under construction and once that’s fully operational we’ll be providing updates on all our runners there throughout the season.
