๐ŸพTuesdays group walks๐Ÿพ
Enjoying the glorious sunshine, we bumped into Sits & wiggles and her pack on the second walk.
Keeping the walks calm in the heat, We engaged their noses and mind with some scavenger hunt and focus work for their mental enrichment as well as working on their here and away cues and single call out recall ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’š

What to do if you think your dog is showing signs of heatstroke
โ˜€๏ธ Call the vet for advice and head to your nearest veterinary emergency hospital as soon as possible!
If you are not able to take them to the vet straight away-
โ˜€๏ธ Get them somewhere shaded and cool
โ˜€๏ธ Place a wet towel on the floor for them to lay on. DONT PUT IT OVER THEM AS THE TOWEL CAN WARM UP AND ACT AS A BARRIER, MAKING THE ANIMAL EVENT HOTTER!!!
โ˜€๏ธPour cool water over their fur and skins- focusing on their tummy, neck and inner thighs
โ˜€๏ธ Never submerge them in water
โ˜€๏ธFan them with cool air or put them in an air-conditioned car if possible

Even if you dog seems to be recovering, they should still be checked over by a vet as many medical problems caused by heatstroke wont show up straight immediately.

Unfortunately it's foxtail season again ๐Ÿ˜ž Foxtail plants are a weed-type grass that can cause serious problems for animals!
Ear infections, nosebleeds/rhinitis, pyothorax, abscesses and tetanus are just SOME of the serious issues that can come from these little guys! If you notice your pet repeatedly sneezing, pawing at their ears, coughing or acting uncomfortable, these could be signs of a possible foxtail and should seek medical attention as soon as possible ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’š

Letโ€™s talk Liverโ€ฆ

5% of your dogโ€™s diet should consist of liver, So, what makes Liver so good?

Liver is one of the worlds most nutritionally dense foods, far more so than the same amount of red meat. So, what are the main benefits?
โ€ข Rich in vitamin A โ€“ This helps with vision, immune function, reproduction and skin health
โ€ข It plays a fundamental role in immunoglobin reproduction
โ€ข Rich in vitamin B โ€“ B2, B9 & B12
โ€ข B vitamins help to support the nervous system, brain function & blood cell production.
โ€ข These B vitamins are also particularly helpful in supporting dogs that suffer with stress and anxiety
โ€ข B12 also helps dogs that suffer with chronic gut issues โ€“ such as IBD
โ€ข Zinc โ€“ a powerful antioxidant that helps to fight oxidative stress
โ€ข Good levels of zinc are needed to support immune health, the nervous system & skin health โ€“ making it great for dogs with allergies, anxiety and some other behavioural issues
โ€ข Iron โ€“ Iron found in meat, fish and poultry is in heme iron โ€“ which is mostly is the most easily absorbed form of iron compared to non-heme which is found in plant-based foods.
โ€ข Ensuring adequate iron intake is associated with better attention, memory and concentration. So, it is especially important for sporting, obedience and working dogs.
โ€ข Copper โ€“ the key to activation many enzymes in the body, this then helps to regulate energy production, brain function and iron metabolism.
โ€ข Copper is also needed for the formation of connective tissues such as cartilage โ€“ a copper deficiency can play a role in joint pain and problems
โ€ข Diets that lack in copper can overtime start to see other issues arise โ€“ a range of skin and coat problems, some neurological issues & immune system dysfunction.
โ€ข Vitamin K2 โ€“ Beef liver is one of the most concentrated sources of K2
โ€ข K2 have also been shown to activate osteocalcin and other proteins in the body - these work to help support dental and bone health.

Feeding a variety of Liver from multiple proteins can help your dog in so many ways, whether it is fed a treat or in a meal, It is vital to your dogs diet

(unless there are medical reason that donโ€™t allow offal to be fed)

Good evening everybody, it seems weโ€™re having a short burst of summer over the next couple of days.
Walks will be shortened to ensure the safety of your doggos and will be walked in the shade of the woods to help keep them nice and cool.
Water will be on offer throughout their walk as well as back at the van, and cool mats are in the crates.
I have the mud daddy to wet their paws and help them cool off.
I have a few cool coats and collars, if your dog does have any of those please could it be left out for your dogs.
Please let me know if you would like me to refresh their water when I drop them back if you wonโ€™t be in.
Any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
Hope you all enjoy the lovely weather

Pain is part of life sometimes. A small injury or illness can cause days of discomfort. As our dogs get older though, they can suffer joint pain that's often ignored because we just assume they are getting old. If you think your dog might be struggling, it's worth a closer look. Ask yourself if you recognise any of these signs. If you need any help with understanding and caring for your older dog, drop us a line in the comments.

Socialisation. Yes, there really is such a thing as "over socialised".
Play is NOT socialisation.โŒ
Play is a separate and important skill.โœ…....but it isn't socialisation.
What is socialisation ?..... Calmness and acceptance of the world.
What it isn't......over excited, scared, hyper, wary behaviour or PLAY.
I know that seems like a big statement to make for some people but society has some strange ideas of what socialisation is.

That doesn't mean dogs and puppies shouldn't play, it simply means one of the FIRST things they need to learn in life is not go to that place of extreme overarousal at the sight of a puppy. Puppies need to learn how to be accepting of dogs in general....then play can be added as a separate skill.

Calmness and acceptance IS socialisation.
Play is play.
Two completely separate things.

Dogs and puppies are a very small part of having a socialised dog. An important small part... but a very small part in a much bigger picture.
The word socialisation seems to be associated with play and that is a big issue with new puppy guardians/owners.

How you let other dogs meet yours and how your dog meets other dogs forms patterns of behaviour.
The more these dogs have over excited, over aroused and hyper behaviour around other dogs...........the more they understand this IS exactly how to meet dogs....and that is really problematic for many dogs.

True socialisation is acceptance and calmness in ALL the world has to offer.
Everything you encounter in everyday life...is exactly what you need to expose your dogs to.

Little and often
Positively and calmly......and you are well on your way to a well socialised puppy or dog.

They don't need to go to that hyper excited behaviour when other dogs are near.

They can be calm, assess the situation and choose to play and interact if they wish.....

That is true socialisation.

Can movement show stressโ“Absolutely !
Seeing stress in a dog can be difficult and I know some of you are aware of the ways this is shown on a dogs body with posturing and face/ear changes....but what about movement โ“Can the way a dog moves be used to judge whether they are experiencing stress โ“Yes. it absolutely can, with caution though.
Some of the graphics and descriptions can certainly be shown at other times and that is the really tricky thing with nearly ALL stress signals given, they can be misread for something else entirely...most often excitement.

A dog eating food and eating it excitedly is not an issue at all.....but what if you notice that they keep returning to the bowl (that still has food in it) again and again in a short period of time ?
Or darting off for one or two slurps of water before returning and then darting off again for another slurp....have you noticed what else may be occurring around you both ?

Often when we look for coincidences we will find more clues as to why this behaviour is occurring.

Jumping at people when they enter is seen as excitement (and it can be) but what if this was actually coming from a fear response.....and the VERY tricky thing is they can look exactly the same.

Look for coincidences, look for clues and have a notepad to quickly write down these quirks of behaviour you may notice, often you will see things clearer and a pattern will emerge.

Letโ€™s talks Grass seeds!
It is the season, and they can cause pain and aggravation in your doggos and can lead to expensive visits to the vets.
Seeds can get stuck in the paws, under the arm pits, around the face and even in the eyes which can then migrate to the back of the eye, especially when the grass is long. Which will then lead to a trip to the vets.

After every walk, all pups are checked for grass seeds as well as ticks etc before drop backs.

Please be extra vigilant when out with your pups in the grass ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’š

โ—๏ธGRASS SEEDS โ—๏ธ

It's that time of year again. Grass seeds may be small but they can cause alot of damage.

Maggie spent most of her walk today, running through the long grass. This evening, she has been an angel whilst I fished one out of her eye.

Be sure to check for grass seeds after your walk. They can be found in their eyes, in between their toes, in their under arms and in their ears.
