You probably have switched your UV off, seeing as we are in the colder months.

But, when you switch it back on when it's warmer, can you remember when you last replaced the bulb?

It's recommended to swap your old bulb, for new, every 6 - 9 months or so. Although there may be a glow from them still, their efficiency drops over time. They are only good for around 8000 - 9000 hours.

It's on my list of spring maintenance. Is it on yours!

Update on our lost teddy.
Busy day today.
Mondays always start with a management meeting and some admin work.
Followed by some tank and filter maintenance.
Getting the frozen food mixed out to defrost is important while the other staff do the morning flake and pellet feed.
Then some time to get back to our outside building project.
Definitely will sleep well tonight! 💤

So, we are now just over 2 weeks in, since our delivery of some tosai.

We had a mix of doitsu go-sanke. Some gin rin go-sanke. Some yamabuki ogon too! There are some others but they will follow here in the next few days.

Whilst netting these, a doitsu kohaku took my eye. What do you make of it?! Is that an inazumi pattern coming?!

Bring on the spring and warmer weather when you can start adding to your ponds!

So, following on from our recent food post, it's not only Saki Hikari foods we have in store.

We have all types of other foods, including flakes, pellets, sticks and sinking pellets. Foods for all budgets!

We have stock of some buy one get one free too! Now's the time to stock up on your fish food, ready for spring!

This morning we have found someone lost, don't worry we will be making sure the best day is had starting with feeding our koi. Enjoying jungle life and getting lots of cuddles. If you're missing your friend we will take good care of it until you can come in.

So, we have had our new koi for 10 days now. All settling in well, as expected.

We will be feeding them some Saki Hikari Balance food soon. This has a mixture of everything the fish could want from a pellet food. It's easily digestible, and doesn't colour the water like other foods do.

It's not only Balance we stock. We have a range of different foods available for your koi, including Growth, Multi Season and Colour Enhancing.

Also available in-store are Hikari Gold, and Staple. There is a treat too, which comes in the form of Silkworm!

Now is the time to stock up on your foods, to get ready for the season ahead. With several pellet sizes, and bag weights in the shop, there will be something for every koi keeper. We can order in other Saki Hikari foods too if you don't see what you want on the shelf

The wait is over!!

We have a winner, and it's a Dainichi Showa. The first Showa to win the All Japan Show in 13 years! It's measuring at around a huge 1 metre in length too!

This incredible fish also won GC in 2023 at the Nogyosai Koi Show.

So, the main event of koi keeping, worldwide, is soon upon us. Who will be following it?!

Will it be Dainichi, or could it be Sakai, that takes the gold?

We will be following it for sure 😍 🇯🇵

Talking of breeders......our buyers will be in Japan this time next month. They leave on 14th February and will be there for approximately 2 weeks, visiting as many farms as they can, to find the best koi, at the best price for you. I wonder if they will visit Dainichi and Sakai 🤔? ( FYI, we have a Dainichi Showa in store right now, which of course will have the breeders certificate )

If you have anything in mind you would like us to find for you, drop us a message at Hickstead Koi with the name of the variety. You could always pop to the shop at Maidenhead Aquatics at Hickstead and leave some details there too!

A little behind the scenes of what happened yesterday ( 16th January ) Several hundred tosai, now in new waters 😃

The time has come, we are preparing for spring. Over the next few months we have a building project going on at the back of the store, while we get lots of great new stock from our many suppliers.
