Gundog Lily
Lily the anxious Labrador.
This is Lily’s first half day training with me. Her owners would like her to be a Gundog but as she has developed she has become pretty nervy and they are unsure how to work through this.
She is still quite young, so I’m certain we can set her back on the right path.
As you can see I do some environmental and noise testing with her to see what I need to start with and what our development plan will be before I can even think about getting her on a field with a gun.
I do love a challenge. 🙂

Constantly revisit this training as Reacher always forgets his manners and literally has an attention span of like 2 seconds before switching off, no longer looking at the source and striking out at the nearest thing!
What you can’t see in the video is me applying pressure with my hand and to try and push him from position.
Nothing wrong with revisiting some of your foundations and brushing up on skills. It’s not a step back at all, in fact you often find it will help you move forward a lot quicker.

Going back to some real basics (again) with Reacher to try and combat this overstimulation and redirecting. This is a constant circle with this dog. I seem to take a few steps further forward then we just go back again! Although over time I am getting less and less incidents. So after he decided to lose all manners again the other day and try get his ball as I was putting it away in my pocket, as a result going straight through my hand (yes it hurt..again!), we have yet again gone back to some real basics, including to remind him of his impulse control and markers! He knows all of this, he knows how to switch, take different rewards for certain markers etc etc but when he gets into that frame of mind he forgets everything (and is very hard to control!). Such a shame cause when he’s on it, he is awesome, but it’s very rare!I have also been working a lot around items he would like to redirect on out of frustration. I am determined to crack it with this dog!Yes you may look at this video and think basics? But yes this is our basics. I have worked obedience with Reacher since 7 weeks old so multiple styles of heeling is his basics. It is our energy and baseline to sync and work together and listen to his markers to release and wait for his reward. We did our first ever demo yesterday @thepawprintcompany Paws at the Park Charity Dog Show. I am so proud of Dutch. Not too long ago he still wouldn’t have done this, just being close to an environment like this was too much. Yeah it wasn’t perfect and he only gave me about 60% work rate to what I know he can do, but the positives out way all of this, including the fact we did not have one reaction to any person or dog! (Even when another dog went at him!)Just getting in there for him was an absolute achievement in itself. A short look into our first 10 min training session in two weeks. I regularly revisit these foundations in a neutral environment so I can be confident Dutch understands what I am asking in a higher stress environments. Creating muscle memory of expected behaviours. Why do this in the first place? Simple, Dutch was human and dog aggressive, had I not taken this control he would have hurt someone. This training helps me divert his energy into a positive source. Reacher ‘Fancy Feet’ is definitely the best heeler out of my dogs. 🥰 So why do I do all this fancy heel work and the other movement work? Simple, I enjoy it, the dogs enjoy it, it keeps them extremely fit, supple, fast, builds our relationship and the training mentally stimulates them fulfilling their needs. This goes for any breed, any age, not just working breeds! The benefits of this work are endless, for pet, sport and working dogs. Also you don’t have to teach a ‘fancy heel’ just teach your dog to actual heel walk down the street (people seem to struggle) and every day commands that work for you. A little bit of fun practicing what I call ‘Platz’, the slam down.
Different to my ‘Down’ command as with the ‘Platz’ the dog goes forward with the front feet into position whereas in a ‘Down’ I expect the front feet to stay in position and the bum to move back.
The ‘Platz’ at different stages that I demonstrate in this video:
• Food and light physical help
• Food only
• Ball to increase drive
• Fading lure (hand and body movement no food or toy)
• No lure and in motion (ball in hand, slight cue with body)
